You guys getting high temp trans fluid alarms read the aforementioned, looks like Tundrafan23 has the answer. owned and towed trailers for 30 years never seen a high temp trans fluid alarm come on in my life until this thread. I suggest if alarm comes on hammer throttle, keep it buried, let them warrant it.

Ouch! No opinion there, just facts? Not all of us kill mountain lions with our bare hands and eat it raw for breakfast. I guess we shall see if the design change results in transmission failures. Thus far, only panty bunching as evidence?

Used the app towing my boat this morning in drive. Nothing of concern to me. ATF Pan temps shadowed the engine oil temps...every time.

Pan temps never got near 250 although TC temps would spike when downshifting out of lock but dropped quickly back to engine oil temps.

Beginning to think the engine block and transmission case acts as a cooler. :) I await @hagrid guidance on the level of panic I should have.

Little over $1,000.00 for 125K I would go that route then you know your covered. I think tran cooler is the same price and a voids your warranty, not worth the risk.

I get the same temp when towing near 4000lb travel trailer , TC will go as high as 243 when stopping and accelerating but like you said , for a very brief time And then goes back down to match pan .now that all on s4 and 60 mph. It doesn't matter summer or fall , I always get same results.
Mostly flat with some grades at times and some VT and NH hills

I don't care that they changed the video to remove the comments about 240+ being too much for a transmission. They aren't engineers so their opinions were never very relevant. I didn't find that helpful nor their sole emphasis that the only important thing to come from the test is that the transmission didn't throw any warnings or explode. This is all about down the line earlier than expected failures.

The *fact* that they lied about why they took the first video down speaks volumes about their integrity.

Right Way: Toyota reached out to us an schooled our un-engineered selves about the realities of the transmission. We removed our uneducated comments about acceptable temperature ranges.

Wrong Way: The video wasn't ready yet. No further comment. (Don't take away our TRD Pro, we love it!)

Maybe it was someone's random comment that wasn't intended to be in there that they missed in the first pass? You know, like when you watch the special features on the DVD and they say "the comments in the following interviews are the opinions of the speakers only and do not represent the studio"?

Yep, i went with extended warranty from wolverine but for the cam tower leak issue since mine started leaking at 4k miles and passenger side fixed at 14k miles and i see timing cover starting to weep now too at 30k miles. I have 18' so not too worried about transmission but if I had 19'+ and had to worry about potential cam tower or timing cover repair bill and potential tranny repair bill since i tow a tt, no doubt i would get warranty.

When the shuttle enters the atmosphere, the bottom coating can withstand very high temps, does anyone know the temp?

Must have been heavier then. I just know it's a 30 footer, not my boat, was a friend's, thought he said 5k but must have misheard.

Even though I’m rocking 2nd gen, I’ll chime in with my recent experience. Mine has a tow package, so it comes with the cooler. I just drove (Thursday/Friday) approximately 840 miles from NorCal to Phoenix, while pulling ~7000-7500lbs travel trailer. The hottest my temps got was 221° at the pan and 246° at TC. It was for just a moment, during climb to 4000’ at about 60mph, in 3rd gear, around 4K rpm, 77° outside. While pulling on level road, or slight incline, the temps were 194°-215°. My combined weight was somewhere around 14,800lbs.

That sounds about right with the cooler on a 2nd gen. I need to figure out if Toyota changed thermostat specs because my '16 runs its coolant at 194-198 empty and the only 2nd gen I've compared it to runs my temps when towing and 183-186 when not. spez: they're both shown as 80-84C in the 2007 and 2015 service manuals. Probably just differences in sensor calibration. disregardify

At 5:05 in the TFL video the scangauge shows 181 TFT at the start of the uphill run so it wasn't even hot yet. People are saying 230+ unloaded on the freeway isn't uncommon. I wonder what it would have gotten up to had they started the run with a hot transmission instead of stopping to do camera work.

Why would a high temp sensor be coming on at 260 degrees?

Are you saying all the 4.7 / 4.6 without the towing package had their transmission blow off at 150k? Interesting

No!!, As I said "what do I know", I know my super duty had transmission fluid temperature pegged at 195F irregardless of what it was towing. I seen tons and tons of transmission lifetime vs temperature charts. I seen my 2021 Tundra transmission at 220F at 78F with zero load. I have seen my 2021 Tundra transmission at 194F pulling my 5.5Klb boat and could not get it hotter. I seen my Tundra transmission cooler cold when 48F outside meaning the thermostat is working and no fluid going to transmission.

In the end as I was sitting in my garage tonight looking at my 2021 Tundra with a glass of Crown Royal I was very glad to see the external cooler I installed just behind the grill.... and in the end that is what important, what make you feel good. I keep it PG rated, lol.

    + Trans cooler
To tow anything heavy with a 4.6 need to install a brake controller. And while doing that most likely also install the Trans cooler, especially since you are close to the 6400 pound max capacity. Is what I did.

as far as a remember , both guys who put million miles on their 4.7 tundra working as hotshot for oil company did not mention anything about putting an external cooler, both mentioned That they were overloading the truck way more then it can handle and never failed , both running original transmission

From what I understood, starting with the f150 2018 onward , ford removed the cooler in the condenser and now is using liquid to liquid cooler in front of the transmission ( same as the puck in our trucks but slightly bigger surface more efficient I would say). Except the raptor and the v6 (non eco boost) they still come with the extra cooler .looks like they are seeing closer temps to what we are seeing with our 19 onward tundras

While I think Toyota is the best car company for engineering in reliability and a million miles is very impressive. These are just two Tundras out of around 2 million sold, which is statistically insignificant and we should not make conclusions based on it.

In my opinion, let's hope Toyota did extensive analysis on this and it is our ignorance about modern technology and material science.

If it is determined to fail like the rusted frames situation, there will be recalls. Information gets out very quickly these days and is matter of time if serious enough.
