No, they don't. They may run hotter temps but there has been ZERO evidence that this is a detriment to the longevity of the transmission.

I only towed once so far with a 30ft boat maybe 5000lbs and kept it in s4 and actually stayed under 200°, I think a big problem is people towing in D, definitely need to stay in s4 or s5 when towing.

The video was edited and it is not the same, first one they mentioned that they were concerned about the 246 temp and in the second one , they got feedback from Mike sweers and they stated that they are not concerned now with these temps vs first video.

They aren't concerned, they aren't the one who shed near 50 grand on their truck , we did.

With a warranty.......unless you void the warranty by installing the cooler (please spare me the magnusson moss act discussion - it does NOT work. Ask me how I know......)

the funny thing is I tow a lot and wouldn’t mind having the cooler. However I go back and forth - should I spend money and install the cooler or should I invest almost the same amount of money and just get the extended warranty from Wolverine Toyota that will cover pretty much every major component for 125k miles. I am heavily leaning toward the latter

246f in Colorado during fall and only on a 8 mile run. Not sure how that holds up in 100f southern heat. Glad mine has a cooler, makes zero sense to get rid of it.

30' foot boat and 5kbls, wow must been an inflatable raft. 22' boat easily 5klbs. you have a super efficient transmission. i drove over a bridge and saw temps 220f with my big 180lb but in it when it was 83F.

Do you know if you have to be local to Wolverine to buy a warranty? Also if not do you have a contact for someone at the dealership to get a quote?

Yeah I'm wondering if Toyota "asked" them to drop the reference of being concerned in exchange for a quote directly from Mike. That TRD PRO they're currently driving for free, and having access to the redesigned Tundra next year all factored into it, while having flashbacks of what Ford did to them after disobeying.

no you don’t have to be local. Call or email Jennifer at wolverine Toyota and she will take care of you. I think the quote I got was 6 year / 125k miles (starts at the day you take ownership of the truck) for a little over $1k.......as reliable as Toyota’s are it does give peace of mind to know that the coast of the warranty will pay for itself with one needed repair

Assuming they towed in drive. Would be interested to see the temps for the same test in S4. That seems to be the way to tow in order to maintain lower trans temps

Besides the trans temp, the truck actually handled the test really well

I would like to see the justification for adding the un-needed transmission cooler version originally (and redesigning yet keeping a cooler in late 2010), and then the 30-40 degree temperature differential seen without a cooler. It would seem that one or the other justification is flawed in terms of longevity or unnecessary equipment. Either case would seem to be an engineering fail. Plus, the temps are up without the cooler now. How did that suddenly not become a concern? I might buy the cooler removal logic if the fluid changed and/or internal components were improved to withstand higher temps, but have not seen anything to substantiate that.

Going up that grade going 60 mph with a 8k trailer the transmission will not see 5th and 6th gear.

Why would you expect to see that type of proprietary information from a manufacturer? If Toyota tells you they made such and such changes to the transmission to allow it to run up to 300 degF, next year all their competitors will be making the same changes.

I am shocked the big Ike Gaunlet is not a REAL test for trucks. We have forum members on this thread who got the high temp alarm (300F)pulling their travel trailers which weighed less. Facts are facts we drive trucks harder than the snowflake TFL guys. Unless someone can explain it differently lol. I bet if temps were 270 ole Mike say "we are good it was below 280F. Why didn't mike say "alarm at 300F" 50F to spare.

Dont both of the 1 million mile tundras have the 4.7L engine with no aux trans cooler? Both of them were used to haul stuff almost daily as well, maybe Toyota is on to something?

Can someone confirm this? If this is the case, it is a very powerful argument that the extra cooler is not needed, even though high temps would seem to shorten the life off the transmission.

Both had the 4.7L, but I am not sure about the trans coolers, I thought I read on here that the 4.7L did not come with them but that could be incorrect.

Just watched the tfl video and read the posted comments to it. Of course a high temperature over a short period of time won't cause and issue but if that transmission operates at a higher temperature over the cause of its life span that life span will be shortened I think we can agree on that and that's why people are posting on this topic. I really enjoyed the one remark to the video about someone saying he tows 9000 lbs up and down the hills of AZ and has 245.000 miles on his truck. That's a lot of mileage on a 2019+ truck lol. But it proves the point that we who have bought the newer trucks would like that same sort of performance. I remember when I was researching payload # for my Tacoma there were similar comments like" I loaded up 1800 lbs into my truck once on a 5 mile trip to the dump and the truck didn't break" Riiiiiiiight carry on Sir...

So why in the world did Toyota waste a thermostatic module, transmission cooler lines and hoses to the cooler incorporated into the condenser for 8 years. Why wouldn’t they take advantage of all the cost associated with that and eliminated the cooler back then?

I 100% feel (what do I know) if you never tow more than 10 miles you don’t need cooler. You get 150k miles out of this transmission. If you tow 100’s of miles then it will be interesting. Time towing is directly related to longevity

He will you tell that Toyota WS transmission fluid is good to 300+ degrees, and who gives a shit how hot it is as long as the transmission temps remain in spec.
