I looked really hard at the GM 3L Duramax, but I just couldn't justify the additional cost to service it. The MPG is outstanding if you tow or spend a lot of time on the highway. Reliability reports are pretty good so far. What scared me off that was the regen cycles more than anything. I don't drive far enough on average to complete the 15 miles at 60 mph to complete a regen.

I was sitting in traffic this week behind a Ram that was maybe 3 or 4 years old at best. Bottom of the rear number was COVERED in rust. Partly the owners fault for probably not undercoating (Canada) but damn.

... Oh this isn't a Ram bashing thread? Woops

Fun Fact: Ram owners are statistically more likely to have a DUI than any other truck others. Within this group Ram 2500 power wagon owners are the worst offenders

A buddy of mine bought a new Silverado with the babymax diesel. He absolutely loves it. He lives by the lake and drives about 2 minutes at 40mph each way to a boat ramp with his bass boat. It pulls his boat like it's not there, but he is definitely not coming close to 15mi @ 60mph for the vast majority of his trips.

Buddy of mine just got a ‘22 RST Z71 baby Dmax. He’s in love. Averaging over 23mpg mixed, best of 31.5mpg highway. It’s quiet and smoooth.

Edit: oh, and the interior is pretty amazing too.

Double edit: he paid around $57k OTD.

I had 2 or three Dodge Ram trucks. The only part of them I hated was the dealer service. Other than that I haven't has issues. I won't buy another because of the horrible Chrysler dealerships in my area. I had a Jeep Gladiator. I probably would have kept it longer if the dealers weren't so lousy in my area.

But if it's so great, why do you ever need to see the dealer again after you buy it?

There are some things its just easier to go to the dealer for - plus getting parts. I also had a stretch that I just didn't have the time to do my own oil changes. I know I could have taken it somewhere else for the oil changes but it was mostly convenience. I can do some repairs but anything more involved is beyond me. Its the same with my Tundra. I'll do my own oil changes but I can't do my own tire rotations and such.

My brother in law picked up a lightly used JL a few years back. The transmission had some sort of solenoid issue that the dealer never fully figured out before the transmission blew. They wouldn't cover it under his extended warranty. Less than a year later the motor grenaded while one of his daughters was driving it. I drove it a couple times before the transmission issue. It was uncomfortable and felt cheap. I wouldn't buy a Cheep either.

My wife’s 2015 Jeep GC Limited is soooo much more comfortable to drive than my MIL’s 2020 4 Runner limited. Night and day. Would prefer to drive it VS the 4 runner any day of the week. If I had to pick one and keep it forever? The 4 runner would be my choice.

I sold my old 2014 GC SRT in 2020 after over 7 years / 80K 100% trouble free miles, and got the wife a 2020 Pro 4R.

We both ended up hating to drive the 4R, and she drove my Tundra, as I mainly drive my work truck (2020 Ram). Love the looks, utility, capability of the 4R. But ended up HATING the motor, transmission, wind noise, and lack of refinement / basic comfort.

So this last winter we sold the 4R, and I got ME another 2020 Jeep SRT w/7K miles (15K now). The 4R Pro had to go in twice for warranty work in less than two years, neither of my Jeep SRT’s have needed anything.

I plan on keeping my new SRT forever………… unless I break down and get a Trackhawk, lol.

Am however very much interested in the next Gen 4R, or if they would offer the current Gen 4R with the Lexus 460 motor / trans / power train, then I would have probably kept it forever for the wife as well.

2020 Pro 4R front Fox shocks would rattle like crazy whenever it got under 40 degrees, which living in Alaska was an issue. They replaced the shocks with the redesigned Fox shocks of the 2021’s.

Then had brake issues that the service techs couldn’t replicate. Would almost feel like the pedal would lose all pressure and go to floor.

Edit…… to be fair, the brake issue was only when the wife was driving, and I couldn’t replicate it either.

Tire rotations are easier than oil changes, and less potential for messes.

You say some things are easier to go to the dealer for, is there anything outside of oil changes and tire rotations that you need to regularly go to the dealer for? I think my last major vehicle issue was the turbo going out in my '08 Legacy 2.5GT in 2014...

Fully hear you for the oil changes. I have a hard time imagining a dealer so bad that I wouldn't want to walk in, go to the parts counter, get something, pay and leave...

The Jeep GC is basically a Mercedes M-Class. The 4runner is a Hilux...So yes I wouldn't doubt that the GC is more comfortable.

Indeed it is. A 2000 era ML frame. So 25 years old in development terms. The all independent suspension and doors that close like tomb entrances. Heavy. Quiet. The ZF 8 speed is also a delight. Full time AWD with selectable 4wd high and low is nice too. Uconnect interface is class leading as well.

My brothers in christ, im in this 3/4 ton diesel rental for the next two and a half weeks because my 1/2 ton work chevy is in for injector/engine issues (shocking).
Pro: its huge and a 3/4 ton
Con: it makes a geiger-counter electrical whirring noise correlated with the pedal and I CANT FIND THAT GOD DAMNED RATTLING COMING FROM THE PASS SIDE. But otherwise seems alright so far.

Its an electrical noise, not the turbo.
The rattle is in the glove compartment. My trex arms wont reach but the radio drowns it out.

You guys are making it hard for me to resist getting back in a Jeep.... Prior to my Tundra, I had the original Cherokee (84) Grand (96) and the Commander (06).. loved the GC and Commander. My daughter still drives the Commander 200k with routine maintenance and expected suspension and brake work. Body and interior is tight. Paint is meh.... I love the new GC ....

A co worker and friend of mine just bought his 3rd Ram, first one 150k no major issues, second was a new Rebel, no issues , he just traded it in because he needed a 2500 Power Wagon to tow his new camper. He swears by them. I don’t think they are as bad as some make them out to be. Are they a Toyota? no but they have made a lot of improvements and like it or not Ram/Dodge has been the leader in innovation and changes in the truck world.

My office gal just got a new Limited GC with the V6. It is possibly the nicest interior I have EVER been in, including numerous BMW / Merc / Audi / Range Rover / Cadillac / etc. Ergonomics and function are a huge improvement over my 2020 SRT.

I am a huge Jeep SRT fan. Had a 2014 for 7 years, and love my 2020 SRT (Eibach Pro suspension, intake, AWE Track Exhaust, carbon fiber exterior trim bits, etc). But …… with how nice the redesigned GC is, when they put that new Hurricane HO motor in one, I’ll be getting rid of my 2020 with the quickness.

Enough reason for me not to take his advice on anything truck related. The Power Wagon is intended for off roading and has a low payload capacity due to soft suspension. It would be my last choice among the various heavy duty truck configurations for towing.
