Many of us have switched from Tundras to Rams. My 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie CTD has had 0 issues.

You raise a great point: not all issues are identical.

When the biggest “problem” thread on the forum involves the seeping of a small enough amount of oil to not drip on the driveway or even change the reading on the dipstick, that’s pretty great, right?

Yikes make sure to report back in 6 months, last ram1500 I had was a limited 2018, was a grade A POS. And I’ve had three 3500 cummins since 2016, great engine but all were lumber wagons that would keep chiropractors in business.

    OP,

We are on page 3 of your own thread, but still no pics of the new truck. Post some up so we can see it. Are you going to update your avatar with new pic of the new ride or are you regretting the trade already?? :p

    Not really.

Its a lot of complaining about it. I had a 2014 that poured oil out of the drivers side tower. Smelled burning oil all the time. Its a manufacturing issue that toyota never did solve. With the large numbers of oil leaks being reported one would think that toyota would have addressed the issue. But it no longer is relevant since the 4.6 and 5.7 are gone from the line up, IMO.

Toyota makes some good vehicles that historically have a proven track record, but they are not as perfect as folks want to believe.

Have a buddy on his 2nd ram since 2013. A new 2013, and a new 2018 or 19 maybe. He had has great experiences with the 2 trucks. He runs them pretty hard. Tows, hauls. Big into backcountry snowmobiles up here in the NE. He’s a crazy maniac from northern Wisco and drove us through plenty of winter insanity to get out to some snowboarding spots in the 2013. Got us there, got us home. The only issue he had with the 2013 was the air suspension lines/compressor freezing occasionally and would ride a little rough on account of that.
When I was shopping for my 2014 DC (in 2016) I was strongly considering a Ram based on his/our experience with his. Probably the only thing that pushed me to a tundra (other than the lingering “ram transmissions always fail” that everyone bangs on about) was seeing the bombed out wheel wells of <5-8 year old Rams up here in salty saltertonville where gen 1 tundras would have some spots on the bumpers and tail gates. Like house-fly sized spots.

could be the demographics of the different owners but still. I was pretty close to being a “Ram guy” at least once. Enjoy the truck OP

    $300 (at worst) permanent fix.

Not at ALL a widespread issue.

I'll admit this would bug me. With that said, I'd label this more of a supplier issue. Interestingly enough, when they were troubleshooting this, the headlight supplier 'couldn't duplicate' the condition. Toyota reviewed the setup and found they weren't duplicating conditions reported in the field and made them do so...and *boom* temperatures were exceeded.

Only an issue on 18's and 19's.

You serious with this? "Major oil spill"?

    1. That's an issue with EVERY other truck. Remember the F150 rusted axles/frames when delivered directly from the factory?
    2. At least with Tundras it's largely confined to the frame. (lol, I kid to some degree). Find me almost any 10 year old Ram/Chevy that does NOT have rusted out fender wells. (Or missing tailgate handles, or a seized up parking brake, or....)

Of course they all have issues. But it's statistically undeniable that Tundras have far fewer issues.

The steering rack was a very small number of trucks that happened to be built in Aug 21, yet Toyota issued a sweeping recall in case someone with a truck 14 years old had their rack replaced with one built in that same time frame. And the headlight thing was literally 9 trucks. Resolved very quickly as well.

No one said they’re perfect, but when your main issue is cam tower seepage—which I agree is an issue—you’re on a different level than everyone else. The majority of cam tower seeps do not affect anything—the operation of the vehicle, maintenance schedule, adding oil between changes, etc. This is why Toyota never did anything about it.

    Oh it did.

I'll admit that I'm butthurt in general where Rams are concerned because after *SEVENTEEN* times in the shop in 18 months back in 2002, Dodge/Ram sort of left a bad impression. LOL

That takes me back. My grandfather had a 1985 Dodge Ram W150 on the farm that I learned to drive on. He bought it used from the forestry service or someplace like that and it ran up until about 5 or 10 years ago. If it wasn't a long bed, I might have tried to talk my grandma into selling it to me after my grandpa passed.

ETA: my uncle has owned various Dodge heavy duty diesels from 1993 onwards and has had enough issues that I'd be hesitant to buy one.

    Good luck

I looked hard at the Ram earlier this year because the 5.7 hemi has been field tested for many years now and the 8 speed gets such good reviews. Had one showed up somewhere in the right color equipped as I initially wanted, Entry level luxury package Crew Cab with standard leather, big screen and just a panoramic moonroof added, I might have snatched it up before my Powerboost with Propower on board appeared at the Ford lot.

I get it. I had a 1988 chevy 1500 bought new that year, spent more time in the service dept than I did driving it. Traded it off after a year.

Picked up a 1989 GMC short step bed in flame red that I had until I traded it off. It had a few minor issues but nothing major.

1988 was a first year model change. Not surprising. My 1995 Chevy short wide V8 5 speed was issue free for me. My 1998 Ext cab steppie was as well. My 2001 had AC issues. Otherwise all were solid trucks. GM don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Bought my 2000 Tundra and have never looked back. Starter contacts replaced in the Tundra due to wear. Zero major system failures over 16 years for me and 260k plus miles. Maintenance and suspension parts only. They probably don’t build them like that anymore either.

There’s a 3month old loaded RAM dually that’s used for hauling the horse trailer at my place. I love it! Super smooth ride & the back seat is very roomy. It pulls the horse trailer with ease & I don’t worry as much when the kids are on the road to the next roping or rodeo. However my daily drive continues to be a 2019 Tundra which I also love! I’m pretty sure I’ll keep the Tundra forever. It handles all the smaller jobs at the ranch, tows the fencing trailer & other utility trailers easily, & gets me to work & back no matter how deep the snow is. However, I think I to need buy more shares of stock in an oil company.

My grandfather's 1993 K1500 was solid until he hit a deer with it. After that, he went through a couple engines because the techs who installed them didn't know what they were doing. I think my cousin is still driving the truck after his Ford Exploder crapped out on him. Just had to replace the fan clutch, I believe.

Man aren’t those memories THE ABSOLUTE BEST!! I miss my grandfather soooo much. He was a real Cajun (I’m in Louisiana) and he barely spoke English and would fish/hunt just about every single morning before going to work and if he didn’t get anything my mom and her siblings didn’t eat that night other than sandwiches or cereal. He Taught me soooo much in life. He was a WWII vet and a man’s man, could fix anything. Damn bro you got me this morning. Great times are gone but never forgotten. Most of us can’t talk or think about cars/trucks without some great fond memories of parents/grandparents being involved. Sorry if I got too nostalgic on everyone this morning. :notsure:

Sorry to hear that brother!! All you can do is remember those great times with him that you shared. I NEVER talk about this cause it’s too damn hard, but my mom is terminally ill (stage IV ovarian)(f’in cancer!!) and it’s tough seeing her go Thru chemo and knowing eventually she will lose the battle. You know we are all going to be gone one day, so that’s why i TRY to live to the fullest each day I wake up and tell those I love how I feel every chance I get. My oldest son is in college and I embarrassed him the other day in front of his friends who came by the house as I gave him a big hug when he left with them. He looked at me like “come on dad now in front of everyone”, but I just can’t help it. Im a big softie now. Crap, what are we supposed to be talking about in this thread…oh yea, OP where them pics at of the new ride??!! We have been asking. What’s the hold up? The longer this thread goes on without any and with your avatar still a Tundra got me wondering if this is a nice troll job. If so you got several of us :notsure:

So I’m in the same boat. Not thrilled with the payload of the new tundra or the design/look. I actually got to drive one in Houston for a day as National rental car had 3 new TSS crewmax. Granted cloth seats, small screen, no sunroof. My one day review was very similar to my initial impression when I drove one last December in a dealer parking lot. Drives more car like than truck like. Sits a bit lower, better grip to road, but not a noticeable jump in power. Not ready to give up my V8 reliability and pay a whole lot more. The new cloth is horrendous. Way worse than the 2018 2.5 Gen cloth. Hot sticky and this seat for a TSS didn’t even have lumbar support (granted model specific so I’m sure the higher ends have it). I really wanted to like the new Tundra but personally not a fan of the look, ride, or reliability issues.

The 2022 f250 diesel king ranch black on black tremor I ordered is now being built and delivered 10/20, but of course they just did a larger refresh than expected.

I’m probably going to order a 2023 same set up. My plan will be to either trade my current tundra depending on what they give me or buy the Tremor and list it for $10k over sticker (most dealers are charging $20k over sticker for f250 tremor) and list my Tundra 2018 3/1 pro comp lift wheels brand new BFG KO2 35/12.5/18 desert tan bed cover weather tech remote start RCI full skids with cat protection dirty deeds 10” bamuffler full set up with resonator no drone pedal commander fab4 front and rear bumpers rigid LED bar and fogs in bumper and bed cover with rhino lining for $50k 74k highway miles in texas 2nd owner no accident dealer maintained and personally changed the diff fluids to amsoil severe gear.

which do you guys think sells first? Tremor at $99k or custom 2018 4x4 crewmax tundra (also has the tech package so all the safety sense features- adaptive cruise etc

If I do go domestic I think I would take a 5.7 hemi over an Ecoboost or anything Chevy....and only less than MSRP since I know I'm going to be spending a lot of time with the mechanic.

Everytime I read through the other forums it's always like, "I had my Ram for 6 months and it's been awesome!"

    Nah really! You don't say!

Toyota pick up trucks are made in the US and I think they use the same suppliers as the domestics. The denso alternators are made in Tennessee..I've seen bad Camry wiring harnesses that are made in Mexico. So yes not all Toyotas are equal. The Hilux is made in Thailand. They seem to do ok.

The last 2 times I went to a Mopar dealer the salesmen were douches. I called and asked to test drive a Pacifica minivan and the salesman said, "it costs us thousands of dollars to disinfect a vehicle after every test drive." That was enough for me to go with a Toyota for my latest purchase. So I bought a 2021 Sienna instead.
