I’m old enough to remember the standard line about domestics vis-a-vis Toyotas for decades now.

In the 80s: “It isn’t the 70s anymore, they have caught up.”

In the 90s: “It isn’t the 80s anymore, they have caught up.”

In the 00s: “It isn’t the 90s anymore, they have caught up.”

In the 10s: “It isn’t the 00s anymore, they have caught up.”

Nowadays, “It isn’t the 10s anymore, they have caught up.”

They never see the absurdity of saying over and over again how it isn’t like the LAST TIME they caught up, they have now caught up.

Respect your position. But I would throw two points out there that you mention, that change the conversation. A) you said Cummins, i.e. diesel. That is a catagory of truck that Toyota does not compete or compare against. Diesels are designed and built for hundreds of thousands of miles as work trucks. They get beat on, look like hell, and the damn things fall apart around the engine. It's the nature of what a diesel is, not manufacturer. Brand loyalists will be brand loyalists. B) You said yourself, people tend to complain more on a forum. Forums are the complaint boxes for manufacturers. Regardless of the brand or topic, the whole goal is to centralize the topic. Look around at this very forum, and it would almost convince you NOT to ever buy a Toyota ever again. Rattle noises, theres a rolling tracker on the turbo issues, poor quality management, the list goes on. No different than any of the previous forums I have been on for Ram, Mazda, Hyundai, Motorcycles, etc. This is my first Toyota, but I have had multiple Rams.

I have worked around every truck manufacturer out there on jobsites, and the only thing 90% can agree on, that despite all differences of opinion.... Fords suck.

    A) Agreed about the diesels. I was just trying to say something nice about Ram. :notsure:
    B) This forum is LIGHT YEARS behind others in terms of the complaints to total posts ratio. Especially before the debut issues of the 3rd gen. But it is relatively quiet again.

I’m a numbers guy. Ram trucks have historically retained less of their original purchase price after the warranty is up, especially compared to Toyota. Ram has the most buybacks and generally the most available vehicles on lots. These things are true despite our opinions or personal experiences or anecdotes.

Not enough, apparently...yet. This damn forum...
I had 3 with that motor and loved them all. My first was an '88 4x4 longbed with a 5 speed. Simple to work on and could maybe kill 'em if you used dynamite.

    LOL agreed.

Although having known plenty of people who worked in/near oilfields and other severe duty vocations, when it comes to 1/2 tons specifically, literally ALL of them have told me that as much as they don't like Fords....they'd choose them LONG before Rams when it comes to longevity.

I just sold my ram 1500 that I owned for 9 years.

It is simple, ram still has issues with their hemi engine - lifters get seized up and damage the cam. There are several people post on the ram forum every week.

Manifold bolts snap and warp headers - same thing, multiple people per week post this.

All tricks have their issues - ok, may be true

But ram didn't address their lifter issues and manifold issues for the past 10-15 years... This is game over for me.

Our 2022 tundra is very new of course, but if you look at this forum, it's not bad at all:

    - no more turbo engine issues reported for about half year.

    - Toyota takes care of their customers and replaces engine or transmission if any suspicious noises. This won't happen with Chrysler... Ever

    - Tundra issues are relatively minor - wind noise, some rattles, and few individual random issues that couple of trucks experience.

We'll have to wait and see how our trucks will do going forward, but I trust that Toyota will take care of me. And I already been through the ram experience, and don't want any of it.

I just went the other direction. Owned a 15 Ram Laramie EcoD for 7 years and 90k miles. Replaced one sensor during that period; still looked new without a rattle when sold.

I bought an Army Green TRD Sport. Reasons:. Wanted a sportier looking truck; wanted a cool color; while Ram is nice inside the new ones are downgrades in materials from 15; all Chrysler dealers suck and you will see yourself all over town in the 5 colors 98 per cent of Rams come in. I lucked up on a Tundra 100m from house just off the truck with perfect option combo and 4500 off MSRP

Pretty sure only in a Toyota can you buy it, drive it, take it back and get all your money.

This. Even though modern diesels are more eco friendly without egr dpf and def than their gas counterpart, they are hamstrung because of perception. Emissions absolutely killed diesels and their efficiency. A deleted 6.7 cummins can break 1000 lb/ft of torque and return 22 mpg or more in an 8k vehicle. Gas cant touch diesel in efficiency but optics matter over science.

The science is that diesels may get better efficiency, but still produce worse emissions, which is the net issue with them with regards to laws.

Now for the real funny perception vs actual science: Hybrids/Electric is supposed to be the green fuel of the future due to limitations on quantities of fossil fuels and non renewable.... how renewable is battery technology? lol google an image of a lithium mine.

Emissions are a broad terms. Seems most Gretas are now worried about c02, of which diesel produces less per mile driven.
The EV virtue signaling doesn't warrant a waste of breath at this point. At least not until we can ramp up nuclear power.

Latest report is that the green mass growth has been accelerating, with CO2 levels raising in atmosphere. V8 is good for the planet! Keep it green! ;)

The biggest problem with diesel, besides soot, is NOx, which is darn straight toxic and can't be easily neutralized, unlike hydrocarbons and CO.

Agreed and the only emissions related things diesels should have are cats and an NOX canister - which is quite effective without destroying engines like the dpf and egr

2023 Ram 1500 Review: Yep, still the truck to beat

I think its a compelling argument if you are looking for a new truck and keeping it only for 3 years....or less. Just saying.
There are a ton of these around me. My 2018 Tundra stands out like a sore thumb.
I am ok with that 8^)
Ford is the sales leader but RAM appears to still be the reference mark.
The last time I owned a product from this company it was a few Jeeps, and back then Jeep was AMC owned. lol.

IMO the I6 in the new ram looks like a joke. Car and driver stated it has a spray in cylinder wall liner (forget the technical terms) that save 3lbs in engine weight over traditional block sleeves. LOL. Big savings!!!

It's a fiat engine brought over to linearize manufacturing, that's my take. Ram slowly becoming Fiat and losing whatever of Chrysler was left, except for the reliability problems of course. Junk.

Just turned 50K on my second 5th Gen Ram 1500 LongHorn work truck. Absolutely zero issues. Never seen a dealership.

That article echos my thoughts and experience as well.

Now just waiting to see which vehicle they drop the Hurricane HO motor in first (Ram or Grand Cherokee) to see which of my current personal rigs gets sold.

Fiat doesn’t offer an I-6 motor in any of its vehicles that I know of. The Hurricane is being developed specifically for Dodge / Jeep vehicles. Dropping for 8 to 6 cylinders and from 6 to 4 for the large displacement engine offerings is occurring across all manufacturers. I think Toyota recently released a new vehicle with only a twin turbo 6 instead of the traditional 8 as well….

I've had a ram 1500 for 9 years. Truck been at a dealer at least a dozen times over 120k miles.

Even if you don't think about the reliability... For me another big issue is that:

Ram does not have Lane Centering assist... At all. So if you're on a highway driving a straight line, you can't use driver assist features so truck helps you drive while you can relax and rest.

In my mind no Lane Centering is a big shortfall, as all other trucks have it, but Ram is way behind with this... My Mbz and Tundra have it and I use it all the time, love this feature.

Ram does have Lane Keep assist, but it's more designed to prevent you run off from the road, not to be used as a regular drive feature as it'll bounce your truck from side to side...

Driveline components; solid rear axles, larger gears, larger transfer case, transmission, drive shafts, hubs, bearings, Suspension; wheel carriers, control arms, springs, stabilizer bars, Frame, Fittings, Hoses, Fasteners, etc... They tried to save weight where the could, like in the sheet metal and interior dash and door componants.

Look underneath a Tundra and look underneath a Ram and you will see why the Tundra is designed to run 1,000,000 miles. Look it up on YouTube. They took apart a Tundra with 1,000,000 miles on it piece by piece and improved everything.

It's not all Toyotas though. Look under a LandCruiser compared to a Sequoia and you'll see the same thing. LandCruise is engineered to last longer and be more reliable than Sequoia. That is why it is $30k more and weighs 900 lbs more.

So can an emissions intact Cummins 6.7L. Hell, factory they have over 1000 pound foot or torque on the HO units.

Ford HO 6.7 is 500hp and 1200tq off the factory floor.

My emissions is intact and I have 525/1025 on my Duramax. No problems in 85k miles. My tundra sure didn’t make that mileage before having expensive issues.

The people that daily drive diesels and treat them like grocery getters have the problems. If you buy a diesel and use it for it’s intended use….

It has been proven on a dyno that deleting a diesel will net you 5-10 Hp max…and then you have to deal with the tuner (hope they are good) and may have to deal with a DOT officer that notices the smoke coming out of a truck that’s newer than 2007 (which is pretty easy to do). I have a mechanic that just left with a 2018 Duramax diesel that’s deleted. He had to send his ECM up to Canada, flash it, and have them send it back, then piece together an exhaust and delete kit. All in all he has 6000.00 into that with the same HP as mine with proper tuning and 4600.00 still in my pocket. Then he had to set up an LLC in Montana to register his truck there since we do emissions testing in CO. That was another 1800.00.

Sounds like a PITA and his truck has been less reliable than mine.
