It does seem weird they are two completely different technologies the fob runs on RF where the app is satellite controlled . The only thing that makes sense is if something in the ecu blocks it from starting when it receives the signal from the fob.

My 20 just turned a year old this month and now my fob remote start has quit. I never downloaded an app or signed up for anything. It worked fine about two weeks ago just noticed yesterday it has stopped.

Yah, I was a bit skeptical about all of the people that were saying it for sure would continue to work considering it's a new feature for the 2020s - and the earliest people got their trucks last year was like September I believe? Which would have put their expiration around September this year, but Toyota was extending everyone it seemed like for a little bit.

Bottom line, if there is no way to use the key fob for remote start after your subscription has ended - that's pretty shitty on Toyota's part.

With everything that Toyota has been changing lately (not in a good way) this might be my last Tundra I have a 2020 (6th Tundra) They haven't really done any body styling changes, there's still chrome EVERYWHERE...They took out the standard navigation so you HAVE to actually plug in your phone to have GPS (kills the phone battery life long term)...Honestly I don't think they're actually listening to their customer base (sad)

Well, that sucks. I really hoped I was wrong on this and the FOBs would continue to work after the service expired. Toyota obviously sends a signal to the truck and disables the various features, including remote start. I understand disabling the app and other services, but to cut off the FOB is a legit Dick move from Toyota. Between no auto-start via the FOB and their whole "shut off the truck when you open a door" logic, it makes me wonder who's really running the group that makes those business decisions. The app was a joke to begin with, so that's one small step forward and two giant leaps backwards.

Sucks and a bit backwards I think. Fortunately, I think all I need is the app. Not sure that Safety Connect and Destination Assist are that useful.

So, trying to find an official source (Toyota) on this without having to actually contact / call anyone, and came across this PDF document. Under the "Using the key fob to remote start my Toyota" section, there is the following statement:

    Edit:

They have some info for "Audio Plus" and "Premium Audio" key fob functionality and time periods... Not sure exactly how that applies to a Tundra.

    End Edit.

Note: Key Fob Remote Start will not function if Connected Services are waived.

There is a bit of information for after that:

Remote Connect equipped vehicles built before 11/12/18 were required to have an active Remote Connect trial or paid subscription for the key fob to perform remote start functionality. The logic has been enhanced to no longer require an active Remote Connect subscription for the key fob to perform remote start functionality

Guessing you could read these two parts a few different ways... but there is definitely some level of interaction between the Connected Services and the key fob remote start.

Nice find...I wonder if the dealership can then toggle it to activate? I'd like to have the option if possible....

I’ve been trying to get my dealership to “fix” my fob remote start for a couple of weeks now and they refuse. I was told by everyone from they service tech up to the “service manager” that in order to get my remote start “feature” back I have to pay for the connected services again. I have a 2020 1794 that just ended it’s subscription earlier this month. Based on the responses I’ve been getting the dealerships don’t care about it being a problem and they’re answer is to pay $80 a year.

This is a real bonehead move by Toyota if a subscription is required to use this feature.

I stand corrected. My dealer down right lied to me.

We need to coordinate so they are slammed with calls about this.

Does anyone have a way to really get this out in the media? If we make a big enough deal of it, Toyota may listen rather than risk the PR issues.

once my trial service cancelled, I went to the Viper Remote+Security system. The remote start works 1000 times better and it has an actual security system. You can download the app and use the GPS and active your vehicle from a far distance.

I purchased my 2020 tundra in September 2019 so it's one of the earlier ones. Toyota extended my connected services till February 2021, so I'll try the fob once it expires. I have noticed the fob doesn't always work especially if there's ice on the windshield. I guess maybe a sensor is covered? It's lame cause that's when I want to use remote start the most. If I try the app, I get an error to check the vehicle to confirm doors are locked or similar. I haven't seen it for a while.

If my key fob stops working, you better believe toyota is getting a call from me!!!! That's rediculous!!!!!! I'm not paying $80 a year for remote start!!!!!! When I bought my 15 it was an option! I was glad to find out it was standard on my 20. It's bad enough that it shuts off when I open the door!!! Now they want us to pay yearly!!!!! No way!!!!! They'll get an earfull then I'll get aftermarket!!!!

So I spent more time than I care to admit trying to get the remote start to activate with my key fob last night, and had zero success. I'll call Toyota this afternoon.

Pretty sure the media has plenty to report on now with Covid, and Politics - I really doubt they would take up a story like this right now.

Only thing I see myself keeping is the remote connect... But the app itself is pretty clunky if I am being honest.

Kind of frustrating that it's the only remote start availability though. Oh you have remote start? Yeah, but I have to wait 3 minutes for the app to find my truck, and it costs me $8/mo FOREVER...

I would say won't work due to it being an app (network) driven program. It's using the data network, and I don't think a Techstream can solve that issue.

I understand the app not being able to be activated, but the key fob should be able to be activated independently. I've had my truck way out in the middle of nowhere, with absolutely zero cell signal where the app can't connect - but the key fob would still start the truck. That was until my subscription ended and the apparently sent a signal to the truck to deactivate it.

I will accept public tarring & feathering if it’s warranted! I have a new vehicle, and apparently it makes a guy dumb... I know RTFM

Haha okay can you lend me the the button combination then? I only have 3 buttons on my fobs - Lock/Unlock/Panic

You triple click the lock button, and keep it held down on the third click. It can be finnicky at times, but if you get it just right - it'll fire up.

Thank you very much. The app is cool and all, but clunky if you’re nearby.
