I currently have a 2018 Tacona Sport and pull a 2019 Coachman 204RD that weights around 5K loaded. I'm right at my max payload and looking to moving into a Tundra. I was looking at possibly moving to a small 5th wheel in the future but from what I've read here there isn't a 5th wheel made that can be towed by a Tundra because of the low payload. I'm not interested in a Escape 5.0, my existing trailer is larger. The strange thing is there is only around a 300lbs payload increase over the Tacoma. Makes my wonder why such a low payload for a Tundra?

Having towed skid steers to job sites. When everyone is commenting not enough truck. We’re implying not enough truck to stop your load. Sure the the tundra can pull it. The bigger problem is stopping that load. Even with brakes on the trailer. The tundra doesn’t have enough ass to stop it.

By the way if you get pulled over and weighed the cop doesn’t give a shit, if you have airbags, or beefier springs. He’s going by that nice sticker you have on the truck.

I live in a populated area, and constantly see the morons pulling this crap. They normally don’t change their habits until Either the cops nail them. Or they cause a pile up.

Keep it safe, get a bigger truck or smaller trailer as other suggested. Keep the Tundra for your other fun stuff. It’s a great truck, just use it for what it was designed for.

Scamp, (and probably others), makes a 5th wheel at around 2000 pounds dry. I was dealing with a guy selling a 2003 Tundra and he sent this along to me. Very helpful.

    So much this^^^

With the new tow ratings of trucks on today’s markets, some states DOT have been pulling in private parties as well. I’ve been seeing in CO a lot of trucks without business logos being pulled in. I have one of these DOT hot spots right by my house. Only a matter of time before I’m pulled in when the Kubota tractor is in tow. When I’m close to max normal capacity, combined I’m pushing 22340 lbs.

For instance, as of right now the new Duramax 3500 regular cab dually has the king of the towing awards rating of 35,500 lbs. I’m sure next year Ford or Ram will pass that number. Now there’s a small catch that has never before even 3 years ago presented itself before in the truck market...CDL requirements. 26001/10500(think that’s right, could be 10k even). Hell, the 2020 GMC 2500 is rated for more than my 2016 GMC 3500. :eek2:

Getting off these diesels, but something more applicable. The new “rumors” about the next generation Tundra is the ability to tow 18000 lbs. Not sure if that’s a conventional towing or 5th wheel/GN rating, but damn!!! It would make sense this is a GN rating, and would be an awesome upgrade for the Tundra towing capabilities and I personally would love to see it (and I would gladly STFU about it).

But the scamp is even smaller than the Escape. I could tow the Scamp with my Tacoma. Someone has to make a 5th wheel Tundra capable other than the small Scamps and Escapes.

I haven't seen any first-gen Tundras towing campers. Then again, it seem most folks who tow any kind of camper have one or more family members requiring a larger camper and a larger truck. First-gen Tundras are just not the ideal or preferred towing machine. That said, I've seen third-gen Tacoma's towing Casita's, Scamps and an assortment of smaller stuff but nothing with tandem axles.

Sorry to hear about the accident. This happens more than people think.
Weather can come in so quickly. I tow in most weather conditions, and a few blizzards that made me question life’s choices.

I think I made a mistake!! I bought a tractor this past weekend and when running the quick math in my head I thought I would be good to tow with the tundra. Now actually sitting down and calcing everything I think I will be very close to max if not over if I want to bring a couple of implements with me.

    Tractor 5200 with loaded tires
    Loader 1200
    6' Brush hog 800
    Box Blade 500
I forgot to include the trailer weight so ~2500-~3500

Now I am way over if I want to haul everything at once :annoyed:

I bought an LS XR4145 with cab. I don't have a trailer yet. That's what I am looking at now and that's when I realized I forgot to add in the trailer weight.

Hobby farm. But I was thinking about doing brush hog services to help offset the cost. I don't think I would feel comfortable putting that on a trailer and towing it around with the tundra

You might be ok depending on the trailer you buy. A 10k rated 18’ trailer usually weighs around 2200-2500 lbs depending on options.

Removing the Loader will be key, no fold up ramps, rear trailer jacks, wood deck.

You obviously did not look a molded fiberglass. My Escape 5.0 has a GVW of 5,500 Lbs, 4,300 in real life with a 600 Lb pin weight. Well within the payload and towing capacities of my 2017 Platinum Crewmax.

I have the exact same setup. B&W turnover gooseneck ball with the Anderson hitch and a 2019 Escape 5.0 TA. Same weights you quoted. I did add RoadMaster helper springs since the B&W bracket uses the same holes on the frame that airbags need. over 10,000 mile under my belt so far and the setup tows like a dream. Well within the capabilities of the Tundra for both payload and towing capacity.
