When you had to research anything, you looked it up in an encyclopedia. If you didn't have a set, you went to the library.

My dad had a horsewhip. It was a metal wire wrapped with braided leather. It would break skin. Me and my brother hid it in the attic. Next time my dad had to hit my brother, he looked around for the horsewhip, couldn't find it, so grabbed an Architectural Digest Magazine, rolled it up and started hitting my brother. It made a lot of noise but didn't hurt. I saw my brother fake crying, but turned to me and was laughing. From that day on, we strategically placed Architectural Digests all over the house.

Phones with no dial, you just picked up the reveiver and told the operator who you wanted to talk to. Assuming, of course, that the party line wasn't in use.

Also, when this was the family camera, but you weren't allowed to use it because film and developing were expensive.
