Things Ole Sarge, Dad, Coach has Said to You

So, this is a great thread, but aren’t most of us at the age where we’re the dad, old sarge, etc? I wonder what ours will be saying in a thread like this someday.

 

FROM MY KIDS....Just things I catch myself telling my daughter(s) alot.
-Be careful
-Did you really think you could do that?
-The good thing about mistakes is that you can learn from them.
-Tomorrow is another day to do better.

 

My big one is “AIS”, meaning “Ass in seat”. I use it when we are going on a trip or to an event. I’ll send a text to the whole family “AIS 9:30 am.”

The rest are mainly movie quotes.

 

friends dont let friends drive drunk, they get drunk and ride with them. (by no means a good choice for either friend)

 

Here's a favorite I always told my boys.

Dont try to out think me, you'll only hurt yourself.

Took it from one of the Friday movies.

 

Be the guy on the team that everyone can count on. It's a lot deeper than it sounds

 

Another constant one I say is “Checkmate”. I mostly say it to them after I make a rambling, nonsense response to them arguing with me. It drives them crazy.

 

Or, are you listening to what I'm saying or are you waiting to say something?

 

Yep, that’s a big one for me. I try to stress to them, especially my son, that your word is the most important asset you have. If your word doesn’t matter then nothing else does.

 

100%. Another good one I say is “I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you.”

 

Damn family curse.

 

And “Never be afraid to say ‘I don’t know’”. There’s no shame in ignorance, as long as you’re willing to address it. That’s one quality that is sorely lacking in all generations.

 

The small hands, or the reason it’s a good thing she has them?

 

Yeah hopefully they remember this shit and apply it one day.
You can give them the tool but, you cant make them use it.

 

The good reason she has them. It probably helped boost your confidence.

 

I also say something similar. I can excuse ignorance, I wont excuse stupidity.

 

When I managed a fishing and hunting store in my early 20s, I would tell my guys to never BS a customer. Just say you don't know amd that you'll ask someone who does. Customers can smell BS a mile away.

 

From my Father: “If you have integrity, then nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, then nothing else matters.”

One of my Sergeants: “Don’t let someone rent space in your head for free.”

And one my old boss said every Friday at the end of the day: “Well I’m off like a prom dress, have a good weekend.”

 

My grandfather always said that a man needs 3 good things, a good knife,a good wallet,and a nice watch

This book is a great read and I could relate to damn near all of it

damn. sounds like you and i had similar fathers. i was always the asshole. stupid. weak. pathetic. he was the badass because he grew up on the streets of detroit then wound up on the board of directors for siemens but he was bi polar and a drug addict. massive confrontations. physically thrown out of the house multiple times during high school. everyone kowtowed to him, except me. the last straw was when he started screaming at my kids that they were pathetic and would grow up to be just as weak as their father. in the end, i ran out of strength to fight him then he died, brain cancer. my mother was no better but much more passive aggressive about it. made it worse actually. she's dead (suicide) now too.

so much this. i stopped speaking to my parents a few years before they died.

I had sarge and dad in one. Sargent first class in 82nd Airborne. He did not have a lot of sayings but he sure had the nicknames for me.

Yup. Its up to us to pass down the wise old tribal knowledge.
I tell my 18 year old all the time " I dont care if you fail , i dont care if you get knocked down, but by God you are my son and I do expect you stand back up and take another step forward every damn time."
Also , I will impart " Life is gonna be really fu##ing hard on you. Get harder and fight harder if you really want it."

 

This has been passed around by many successful individuals over the years.
