Just got off the phone with toyota. You need to be subscribed to remote connect on the app which means you give them permission to collect all your data, to use your key fob to auto start the truck. I logged a complaint (like that does any good lol) maybe if more guys call and complain we can get something done.

Since I declined the data collection my remote start now longer works on my key fob.

I'm glad I've lived long enough to see the day when something other than engine horsepower bunches the panties of truck guys.

Now come here and let me kiss you :woot::pray::popcorn:

Reading all about the concerns about Toyota and Google tracking you reminds me of a divorce case years ago where they pulled the toll records from the husband to confirm that he wasn’t where he said he was! Get out the tinfoil!

Years ago, driving on an expressway in Korea, I mentioned to the driver all of the cameras on the expressway, and maybe he was driving too fast and might get a ticket.

He said "not a problem, the cameras are turned off because they took a picture of the mayor speeding in his car with his mistress next to him" the picture was mailed to his home where his wife opened it.

I could just be blowing this whole thing out of proportion?

Maybe Toyota has an opt-out where the truck will function normally, as in the radio won't pester you for an account to set profile?

Maybe no one has seen that option yet?

The remote start from key fob on my wife's Toyota still works at this time, her trial period expired about a year ago. So, maybe this is all poor communication?

I have seen multiple reports saying that Toyota will eventually kill our key fob remote start, they just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I just want to buy the truck, conduct my ownership in private, and only worry about it when it needs service or repair. Otherwise, I just want to exchange my money for the truck and drive away never to be bothered by Toyota again. Or tracked. Or get a bill after truck is paid for.

I spoke to them today, waited on hold as the woman went up the chain and she confirmed to me the fob will not start the vehicle without the application subscription. Lots of people are still on trials so they have no idea yet.

    Call toyota and ask yourself.

I'd probably be better off not mentioning it to them.

Our trial period was only a year (probably because it's a cheaper Corolla) and we bought the car in Dec 2019.

Back then, on the Corolla forums, everyone was under the impression that once the key fob works, it'll always work.

This thread reminds me of John Deere trying to block farmers from working on their own tractors/equipment so they'd be forced into Deere service centers exclusively for EVERYTHING maintenance or repair related (I believe that was the gist of the situation, it's been a while since I heard about it). I know there were lawsuits, I don't recall what the final judgement was, or if the case has been settled.

    On edit; found a link.

I remember that as well. Right to repair is still going on with Apple, the corporations over stepping their bounds and making decisions over items we bought, paid for, and own is ridiculous. But they are doing more and more of it, that's why it's important to speak up.

Unfortunately plebs don't care until it is directly causing them grief. By then, it's to damn late.

Wow, BMW charging a subscription for heated seats, Cadillac charging a subscription for cruise control....I never heard of that. Toyota is just following the rest of the greedy f****.

How long until they get a subscription to have your engine run. Permanent renting, no ownership.

This is very true this stuff tends to go in one direction but again the solution is not to partake or subscribe. I get it’s annoying but again I simply won’t spend a cent on the service if I was so strongly against it cause honestly this is the only method that will get their attention.
If they disabled the lock/unlock button I would honestly be pissed. That’s the only thing I have ever used in the last year and a half through the key fob. I never used the key fob for anything else because I never researched what else it does.

The Tundra is my second vehicle and where I live these has been an alarming rate of thefts (where the thief simply drives away while the owner is in possession of both key fobs). So I disable my fobs to deter theft because a signal is constantly being transmitted and it saves the batteries on the key fobs. I had a fob die due to a battery and was barely able to the the car started (push button). So I use the app to unlock and lock frequently which has zero effect on the fobs. I can setup guess settings and perimeters because I don’t have the time and proper tools to do certain mods. I can watch my truck as to how and where the mechanics are driving. Additionally in regards to security it’s family/ATV hauling vehicle and unfortunately that means I have to frequently park far away from where I am going to be. The app alerts me to any time any door and even the hood is being opened real time.

I disable my fobs as well. Hold lock and press unlock twice. Red light will blink 4x, and the fob will not transmit until you press a button again.

Someone a couple streets away from me got their vehicle stolen out of their driveway. I don’t know if it had anything to do with cloning a key fob or not, but I’m already in the habit of disabling mine. Battery lasts longer too.

The problem is most of us younger people don't care - we've accepted we're being tracked and listened to. How many times have you been talking to family/friends about something you'd like to buy - then run a search and with one letter that exact product pops up. It's too far out of left field to be a coincidence. If you don't want to be tracked you can't have a new computer, new smartphone, have a Google account, have an Apple account, have an Amazon account, or use any of those products. Vehicles are one of the last frontiers where data selling isn't common practice. The stress of trying to avoid it just isn't worth it to me.

I'm curious how it works for those of us who aren't in cell signal all the time? Like if I go off the grid for a week am I going to lose the fob features because the truck hasn't connected in a certain time frame.

If you think about it, you really don't own anything outright.

Can you keep your home if you dont pay your property taxes? If NO, then is it truly YOURS?

Can you keep your car if you don't pay your annual personal property tax? Same logic as above.

The government has been doing this for years. Corporate America has adapted and rebranded it as "subscription fees".

I recently had this conversation with a friend about property taxes. Crazy. The lack of care from the people is dumbfounding.

    This will get worse.

I've done that on European cars, but as far as I've seen, with Toyotas, the tools to hack them haven't become available to the general public.

I'd guess it take bootleg TechStream to do it, but Toyota could come in OTA and undo your hacking.

Kinda reminds me of the airline industry charging for checked baggage, then oh you want to reserve a specific seat that will be another 35$… Just another form of capitalistic greed.

I’m picturing you typing this with one hand while Newsmax blares in the background and your other hand feverishly dialing the 1-800 number to the gold bullion commercial you just watched.

    Only kidding!

I’m not in the 18-34 demographic, but I’m not opposed to the transition to subscription services where it provides mutual benefit.

Looks like they state here that vehicle 2018 and prior get their auto start function even after the trial ends. 19 and newer are gonna have to pay.
As far as what year tundra is the last year before they go bonkers, I'm not sure. I'd like to know as well. One of the tundra experts around here surely knows.

I guess it have to be one before remote connect was installed.
