TFL just confirmed MPG for hybrid

Disappointed In the truck you haven’t drove that’s not even being produced yet? Or disappointed in TFL’s driving and there one individual mileage check on a pre production vehicle that’s not broken in yet?

 

The wife’s 2021 Lexus RX450h hybrid gets 31 city and 25 hwy, with combined of consistent 27 mpg. The hybrid Tundra should do well in stop and go city driving. It’s tempting, but I’ll wait and see what changes in 2023 or 2024.

Jesus dude, go back and look at which video I linked, quoted and responded to! It didn’t have shit to do with the Prius model. There are multiple videos linked on this thread regardless of the title.

 

How come this Prius model has more HP and torque that ur V8?

 

Grow up dude. All I was saying is after all this jibber jabber for 5 + years on a redesigned Tundra and we get a truck that gets the same or barely better fuel mileage than everything else out there? I expected a hell of a lot more. I have zero interest in an electric truck, I don’t live in a city, and spend many days a year no where near a 110 outlet. And I’m not a kid looking to eek very hp I can out of truck, than means nothing to me.

 

What were you expecting? 40-50 mpg like the Prius? They will add a PHEV system and an EV truck eventually that will get much better efficiency.

They would never do a Prius type hybrid because of all the bitching that would follow for being gutless but it turns out people will bitch regardless .

 

MPG should not be the primary concern for anyone buying a truck. Buy a little commuter car (like a Prius) as a 2nd vehicle if you want to save gas.

 

I agree, obviously since I drive the truck that gets the worst fuel mileage of all of them. But if you seek to redesign your brand after a decade plus to compete against all other trucks currently made, 19.8 mpg highway speeds isn’t that enlightening. Both the GM trucks will easily beat that mileage with outdated designs in the 5.3 and 6.2. I don’t care for the looks of the 2022 Tundra at all, but I was expecting more in the performance dept. We all know that the “don’t buy a truck if your worried about fuel mileage” doesn’t fly in the grand evaluation of marketing when it comes to which is the best half ton made. Since most people use these trucks as daily driver suburban grocery getters 99% of the time, fuel mileage does matter. FWIW If TFL’s test had shown 23.2 mpg on their test that would have been eye opening!

 

Or Chevy Vega (Aka the oil burner)!

If that truck would have been a hybrid it probably would have. But it sounds like someone gave you bad info on what a 3.5tt v6 could get. They got 20mpg combined mileage. The trucks rated for 20mpg combined. In different conditions it would have gotten better. Point is it gets way better mileage then the old weaker engine. That’s something to be happy about. Unless your a person trying to justify not buying a new truck. Then I get it. This truck sucks

 

One of the engineers said if u maintain a steady throttle the engine will shutoff even at highway speeds.

 

For people driving that nominal 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year any new vehicle sucks at saving operating costs compared to a serviceable vehicle they own that is paid off!

 

Just because mpg isn’t your primary concern doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be a concern at all.

 

I wonder what the 5.7 with a 10 speed would yield.

 

And a 3.31 rear end. My bet is that it would be pretty much the same as the 3.5 TT non-hybrid.

 

For those of us who are close to getting a new vehicle(replacing an 08 tacoma here) and want a new truck getting good MPG is a big deal. ANd no it doesn't make sense to me to have a commuter car. I don't want to pay license and registration, insurance, and maintenance on a second vehicle. Let alone to pay for a second vehicle.

 

Sure I understand that, believe me I’m more than ready for a new truck. When I start to narrow down what I want fuel efficiency and fuel type/cost will be a factor, albeit not the top of my list.

That said I harbor no illusions that buying a new $60,000 vehicle is going to save me any money if I go from 15 MPG average with something that’s been paid off for a decade to 24 MPG average on a $60,000 vehicle. I’m going to buy a new truck because I want a new truck, and have a use case for adding another 4 wheel drive to my fleet.

 

Agreed, my truck is my daily driver and our family vehicle. Saving $100 a month on gas is a big deal as long as the performance stays the same or improves. During hunting season, I'll burn $90 a weekend in gas, it would be great to cut that down so I can blow my money on other things like more ammo or guns.

 

Then pay off your current truck, maintain it, and don’t spend $45,000-$60,000 on a new truck.

The money you save will more than pay for the fuel, and free up your funds for other goals.

 

Paid it off 2 months ago and don't plan to buy a new one for 4-5 years, but when it's time to buy a new truck, I would like to buy a more fuel efficient vehicle. I've said it before, it will never make sense to buy a new truck to save money on gas, you will never come out ahead, but why throw money away when there are ways to save fuel without compromise. Now if this truck turns out to not be reliable then that will be a different story.

 

OK, now I’m tracking. That’s a solid plan.

I paid off my 2007 a bit early and decided to drive it until something major out of warranty happened. That would give me the excuse I “needed” to buy a new truck. Well, 14 years later I finally got a check engine light for a low efficiency catalyst. At this point it’s been so good, I’ll just fix the old girl.

Even after I buy a new truck, the 2007 will stay for knock about duty, and winter driver deluxe for the wife. The Chevrolet SS is garaged in the winter. My wife’s old Scion tC needs a few items addressed, and once I get a new truck (or maybe a new 4Runner or Lexus GX) the tC will be driven to Gillette, WY where my away from home terminal is. That way I will have a car at the hotel.

The only wrench in those plans might be my mom moving in with us. My dad died of a massive heart attack almost a year ago, and she wants to get out of that house. She just bought a brand new 2021 RX350, and that will exceed my garage and driveway available space. She told my wife that in the winter time if she’s living with us that the wife should just drive the Lexus if she wants to. So not sure what I will do at that point.

 

the 19.8 was a mixed test (80/20) with a prototype. Let’s wait and see what the 100 mile highway loop at 70 gets. I bet it’s easily over 21 mpg and closer to 23 mpg.

 

For me, it's just simple numbers unless the hybrid performance is outstanding. Haven't seen that yet in reviews I've watched so far. If the hybrid cost is less than my expected mileage savings over the life of the vehicle, I'm in. If I remember correctly, the f150 powerboost was about a 4k premium. Correct me if I'm incorrect...

 

I believe their target was 20% more power and 20% more fuel efficiency. I think they are in the ball park for those figures. So take your monthly truck fuel bill and you could use roughly 20% for anticipated savings. This would be for regular use driving. I'm not sure you're going to get 20% better under heavy work / towing, but we will have to wait and see for that.

 

Normally big tires kill mpg, I wonder if the torque of the electric helper motor will help with this

 

I think it will have a bigger impact on it to tell the truth. The bigger tires will be too much for the electric alone and will require the ICE to turn on more.
