    have they though? i have a buddy that has already spoken for one. He isn't spending every day on a truck forum letting salty people ruin his excitement and likely will be very happy with it in the end. Don't get me wrong this forum is a valuable utility but all we have on 2022's is speculation and a tidal wave of pissy 2.5 gen owners that are looking for any reason they can find to talk crap about a truck they have never even seen in an effort to defend the truck they currently own.

    The hybrid seems to add power simply for the fun of it and a bit better fuel economy than the non-hybrid TTv6.

    I remember hearing rumors of the hybrid’s power a few months ago (450hp/650tq) and thinking, “so this is how Toyota will get around diesel regulations and release a towing machine that will debut well out in front of the half-ton pack.” I thought they were going after big torque for towing/hauling. A super torquey hybrid drivetrain would pair well with a beefed-up fully boxed frame. They could have given us their own version of an HD-lite truck—2k lbs of payload in a 4x4 crew cab configuration (you know, like the Hilux that we don’t get in North America) and 14k lbs towing.

    But Toyota has gone for the lifestyle crowd—and they’re probably right to do so given how we on this forum use our trucks—and instead of a towing monster, we have a really fun and most likely very reliable off-roading truck. Once again, we’ll have to fit it with aftermarket parts (tow hooks this time in addition to suspension mods) to be a serious off-roader. And once again, we’ll have to venture past our payload numbers for the occasional “real truck” job.

    As I’ve said before, I’ll still probably end up in one several years down the road. It’s a great truck. But I don’t think it’s unreasonable that some are disappointed with certain aspects of it. It’s hard to release a truck these days; everyone has different ideas for what it should be. I sure did.

    Fast forward 10 years and we’ll be seeing $10/gal and non conformist V8 owners being lynched in the streets by the gen z crowds in their all electric Tesla nanny pods.

    The 2022 is a damn good truck, Toyota has a few tricks up their sleeve and will release a sporty “hot tune” and beef up the electric motor in a couple years to 3 or 4 kw. Along with Li - po or better battery tech.
    The 2036 Tundra will be the one we should have gotten in 2022...

    This is from an article stating I Force-Max has not released numbers yet. Not sure what to believe now.

    “Toyota is tackling another issue, poor fuel economy. The conventional twin-turbo V6-powered 2022 Tundra has earned EPA fuel economy estimates of 18 mpg city, 23 highway and 20 combined. That’s about a third better than the outgoing truck, which returned 13, 17, and 15 mpg in the same metrics. The four-wheel-drive version is rated at 17 in city driving, 22 on the highway and 19 combined. According to Toyota, the hybrid powertrain, which connects the twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor, doesn’t have a rating yet but will be even more fuel-efficient.”

    This is one of the reasons I wanted awd on it. Every video I've seen someone punch the gas they've gotten some degree of wheel spin. That's going to seriously affect everyone's 0-60 times. And I don't think any of them have specified what drive mode they were using.

    You have to consider that the Hybrid is much more powerful than the base engine. How often do you get a serious power increase and significant fuel savings out of the same engine? The Highlander Hybrid gets something like 50% better fuel economy, but it also has a tiny 4 cyl engine with the battery, not the 3.5L V6 in the non-hybrid. Maybe Toyota should downgrade the gas engine to a turbo 4 cyl and then it could be a good city commuter / small delivery truck with amazing mileage, however it would be slow and not be able to tow anything.

    I still think they could do both. They're not going to get it to 30 mpg probably, but they could definitely program it to run the engine less when you don't need the extra power. They may have done that in eco mode for all we know. I'm guessing when they announce the official mpg rating it will be in normal mode since that's what it'll start out in.

    Real world testing with TFL shows the hybrid getting 19.9 mpg after 150 mile road trip.

    That's not all that much better than the 5.7.

    I do like the new version. just not enough to jump over.

    Basically I can go back to stock tires, drive ≤65mph, and almost completely close the mpg gap with my big, outdated, shameful 5.7L v8.

    Also, replacement cost of a Hybrid battery may negate any fuel savings you are able to extract. The batteries will always go bad. The question is when.

    It's about 4-5MPG better IME. Something to be happy about if buying a 2022, maybe by itself is not a huge reason to switch

    They can easily do that by downgrading the engine but no matter what is done, last generation owners will still bitch. They always do, helps with anxiety .

    There are a lot of guys coming on here and posting false mpg information and then talking about how they all ready get better mileage with there 2nd gen anyway lol. It’s getting really old.

    The hybrid system on these trucks doesn't work like the hybrid systems on the Prius. Not primarily for more fuel economy but for increased torque on certain situations/conditions. The motor does not work on full time basis. Accelerating from stop for sure and very low speed driving i.e. trails. Hino uses this system on their hybrid trucks. Same set up. On the Hino website, they listed the hp and torque of the Diesel engine and the electric motor separately. That's probably cause, the electric motor does not operate in full time so to make a claim to have 650 something ft lbs of torque at such rpm is not always true. On an unloaded truck, I doubt you gonna get that max torque at that rpm. But towing near max or at max, yes and only when the conditions are met (ecu program) i.e. passing, climbing up hill, stop and go.

    Why can't they just add an echo and sport buttons? Echo gives you better MPG and sport gives you more power when you need it? Should be fairly simple on a hybrid. I know other models have it.

    Not good at all, don’t even know how fast he was driving, but that means go up 1 size in LT tires and your at 17.5 Mpg on the highway. Gotta say I’m pretty disappointed.

    Plus TFL got 3 mpg less than advertised as I suspected they would, that’s pretty close to F150 Eco mileage with stock tires.
