In my Tundra; (2021) vintage, Toyota changed the oil at 5000 miles with Pennzoil 0 - 20.
I had some clickety clack so I threw in a bottle of Ceratec and the engine was electric motor quiet.
My oil changes are Pennzoil 5-30 with a bottle of Ceratec.
    Improved mileage and cemetery quiet.

This last oil change I threw in 3 quarts of 0W 40 Amsoil signature series and 5 quarts of Castrol 5W 40 bc it was leftover oil I had lol. Sounds amazingly quiet and smooth. The wife’s car (2017 sienna) also calls for 0w-20 and that sounded like a diesel straight up. Threw 5w-30 in it and the difference is night and day, noise wise.

Do you remember in the old day's, in the 70's when gas and oil where in short supply. The price triple, that's when a lot of us switch to recycled 30w recycled oil.
Most cars started to smoke when they hit 60,000 miles on them, and a lot of truck and cars didn't make passed 100,000 miles, without a rebuild.
I remember when we used lots of recycled oil in the military.

I had a 4.6L SOHC V8 engine in a Ford Mustang once. It was an engine that was used for many years. In the early years of production they spec'd 5W30. In latter years they spec'd 5W20. There were NO changes to the engine. It was very obviously a ploy to score higher on EPA CAFE numbers.

I ran 5W20 in mine for a while and got oil analysis each oil cycle. I then switched to 5W30 of the same brand and ran that for a while with oil sampling. The 5W30 produced lower wear metal numbers in the oil samples, which of course makes sense.

My Tundra will never see a 0W20 or 5W20 oil.

Back then there was an ad for a toilet paper oil filter conversion.
Twin canisters that held toilet paper to filter your oil twice as good as a conventional filter.
Never knew anyone who use em though.

It's a pretty common set up on older diesels, it actually is a really good bypass filter, people use toilet paper rolls, or a paper towel roll.

Anybody used 5W30 full synthetic from Quaker state? Any difference to Pennzoil? Both are from Shell and there is price difference in favour of Quaker state. Is it just brand loyalty craze?

They didn't add 0W30 but here is the rest. Good comparison list.

Rumor is Toyota branded oil is made by Mobil 1. I get 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 at wal-mart for $26. They also go on sale at Costco every now and then 6qt case for $27. Hard to beat that.

Correct my confusion. There are a million charts that show outside ambient temperature and what oil to use. Then there are another million forums where people argue for example me here in Phoenix and its 115 degrees in the summer that one should switch to a higher viscosity oil. EVERYTHING keeps using the outside ambient temperature as the reason. But engine oil doesn't care about the outside temp. once it's at operating spec. My truck oil temp in summer is literally only 2-3 degrees higher then coming home last night from work when it was 35 degrees. The oil is operating in the same environment at operating temperature. I could understand changing the W(winter) viscosity but not the normal operating viscosity. I talking in general here as our trucks do have different viscosity numbers for other countries even though the engine is the same. I just find it odd that outside ambient temperature is even a consideration in the topic.

    Too many, but not enough....
Damn, it regularly gets above 90 here in socal, looks like i should be using 15w-40. That would cover the whole band of temperature my truck sees a year from winter in the mountains to heat in the summer.

Its somewhere in this thread said correctly, what it comes down to is the first few minutes till you reach operating temp of engine. That time frame is the one that causes the most friction and ambient temperature plays a role. In addition, the manufacturer used the ambient temp range to classify oil viscosity for the every day consumer. Cooling engine at higher ambient temperatures might play a role too in the long run for longevity of the engine oil, how else would you be able to generalize oil change intervals as a guideline?

Outside temperatures matter when it drops below zero, I got a lot of flak from friends and family when I say use 0W30, they say, NO WAY TO THIN ! I say , look to the right of the W , thats where you're looking to be once warmed up to operating temperature. 15w40 is for diesels , and that is going by the wayside with new and improved modern diesels.

Does anyone know an example when any oil changed at a reasonable interval did cause any damage to the engine? Just curious.

now you went and did it....you are gonna lather up the oilies.

asking for facts. you should know better.

of the oil related failures....99.99999% had to do with oil availability. keep oil in it. any oil. I use cheap oil. and that cheap oil tested as well as M1.

    more facts...https://www.youtube.com/c/IDoCarsalldaylong

this dude shows the actual engines & what happens when you starve oil.

I am just trying to keep this discussion interesting. Wouldn’t it is amazing to see an engine fail spectacularly just because someone put the wrong viscosity oil in it?
And yes, if your engine consumes oil, it is already dead.

    I agree.

on the Bobistheoilguy site, they talk about everything EXCEPT the obvious fact that engines don't fail if they are oily.

I ran my 84 Acura integra on Castrol 20w-50. I sold it with 195k miles on it. purred like a kitten.

now I ran Castrol for YEARS....then I switched to M1, because of the coupon. that stuff cleaned the brown film from my dipstick in one oil change. (a joke is in there)

so I used M1 from then on. then a Costco was built near my house. Kirklands 0w-20 it is.

yes, I ran the teflon shit back then & zmax...but my cars still ran.

I miss my 06 sequoia...big ole smooth riding land yacht with 12 cup holders.

    NOPE

Friend had a Jeep pick up, 1986 or 7 ?? Never did an oil change EVER ! It made it to 188,000 miles before the sludge stopped it cold.

I knew a guy locally who ran a busy roofing company who bought Ford pickups new and swore he never changed the oil. He added as needed and got rid of them at around 100,000 miles. I asked him if he didn't realize he could easily go twice that with regular maintenance, and he said they were so beat up by then it didn't matter. :)

There is something to that attitude. I sold our 2011 Honda Element and upon gathering all the service reconds pondered just how much all that time and expense increased the price I would get. My conclusion was very little. To 90% of potential buyers all those records meant very little. Everyone offered the same. What KBB said it was worth.

I think records may make it sell more readily, but you're right. It's worth what it's worth.

The average Joe is perfectly happy to buy a car, drive it a few years and trade it in. Maintaining it to the nth degree won't get him any better service out of it or make it worth any more at trade in as long as it's clean.

The only thing sheep care about is CarFax which has a huge disclaimer you must check before buying the report absolivng Carfax of all responsibility of missing or inaccurate information. CarFax gets their information from Police reports. I would guess 70% of accidents dont have Police reports. Its amazing how the sheep public has been programmed. If you buy a vehicle over $3.5K spend the $300 to have it inspected. They might miss a bad solenoid in the transmission but they wont miss aftermarket panels, paint work, frame damage. As far as maintenance records, the guy that pulls the little book out of the glove compartments with dates and services in different color ink over the years is golden. Half the time the dealer services your car somehting gets fked up......
