anybody change their own oil? i just bought the vehicle with a little over 21k miles on it and don't want anybody charging me an outrageous price, and besides, i don't really know if they are putting what should be in it anyways. what's up with the 0/20 weight anyways? they "gov" says its for better fuel economy? i call bullshit. i want to change over to 5/30. thoughts?

From what I know the 0W20 is used by the manufacturer to increase overall fuel economy across the entire product line. This minuscule increase helps the manufacturer meet current CAFE standards for fuel economy. You will not see the difference in your truck by running 5w20 or 5w30 wt oil IMO. 5w30 is cheaper will still provide the same lubrication but will lower fuel economy but you will probably never notice it. There are several other Tundra owners on this site that I have seen using 5w30 in their trucks.

Been changing mine with Mobil 0w-20 synthetic. Others use 5w-30. Not a huge difference. Iowa shouldn’t get too cold for it to be an issue.

If you don't mind, what did you pay for your Tundra? Before taxes, etc. I am getting ready to sell mine and just wondering on price.

The 0-w20 is because of the tight tolerances on the engine. Precision manufacturing... 0w16 is already next.

My opinion is: the oil meets needed ratings, its good. Recently got Halvoline, 10qts for 22$ rebates and on sale. Pick up an OEM filter and change myself for less than $30, no stripped skid plate bolts, I know the right amount is added- 8.5qts 2019/20.

I run 5w-30 pretty much year round . No ill effects . I trust it to give a slight edge in protection for towing .

VVT-i uses engine oil pressure to set valve duration. Wonder if deviating too far from recommended affects this? Probably not yet there has to be a relation, no?

I love how the backyard change their own oil mechanism know more than the Toyota engineers who design these engines when it comes to what oil to run. Just do what they suggest, is saving a few bucks a couple times a year worth possible engine issues?

The factory repair manual states use of 0w20 to 20w50 is acceptable.

These engines for the most part are not quiet regardless once warmed up. Most wear happens on start up so wait until its up to temperature before racking off the Keith tunes

Page 603 of the ‘18 owner’s manual addresses viscosities . Using a higher viscosity is fine according to the manual . 0w 20 is strictly a fuel economy measure .
Oil viscosity (0W-20 is explained here as an example):
    • The 0W in 0W-20 indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold
startability. Oils with a lower value before the W allow for easier starting
of the engine in cold weather.
    • The 20 in 0W-20 indicates the viscosity characteristic of the oil when the
oil is at high temperature. An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions

You do realize that this same engine used in other countries recommends that 5W30 is used.

The US spec of 0W20 is for "energy conservation." You can call it: miles per gallon.

You MUST remember that the automotive manufacturers are in a hot, sweaty, Greek orgy with the benevolent imperial federal government for gas mileage (cuz we're almost out of oil. But that's a different subject altogether). As such the auto manufacturers either COMPLY with the edict from the government (known as: C.A.F.E.) or they get fined. And this is where the 0W20 comes in. The "fine" is a sliding scale. So the manufacturers literally have an incentive to eeeeeeeeek out .05 mpg's more if it gets them into a less punitive fine category. 0W20 oil must get them a puny tiny additional mpg. "Energy conservation."

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Ok, so for Mexico they don't care about gas mileage or standards.

Correct. I'm sure they care about MPGs, they're human too. Yet not enough to put in "watered down" oil like the USA.

Yet they do care to post a sign on highways saying not to block lanes by driving next to each other. Small yet important point....

Why can't the USA learn from our neighbors?

Mine is Very quite, not at startup, it Roars then. But I agree on the startup wear. Wonder why no one ever developed the "pre-start oiling system"? To counter that, some, I throw in Certec, once per 20,000 miles, don't know if it really helps, but MPGs went up by 2/10 of 1 mpg. Snake oil, who knows...i throw away more money on 2 pints of beer, haha....

Masterlube 3 quart pre-oiler. It sends 1.5 quarts at 80 psi into the oil sending unit passage. Very easy to install. Just remember that the thread is British Standard Pipe Thread when buying a needed adapter.

I'm switching to 5w30 also. Already bought the oil, will be using Shell gas truck oil which has good reviews. I did extensive research before making the decision and this engine can absolutely run 5w30 without any problems. 0w20 is the cause of lots of oil consumption issues.
