Where is the oil pressure being measured? Just because a higher viscosity oil is harder to pump doesn't mean your engine is getting better protection.

Or maybe its just the stock exhaust. Just sure seems noisier in cabin than other trucks

I just noticed from the oil pressure gauge in the cluster. With the 20 the gauge is always below half and when cruising it also below half. With 30, it's right at the half and cruising its above the half. I am just guessing I am getting better protection in the sense that my engine doesn't sound like a diesel. To me, when I hear all that ticking it makes me think metal to metal contact. In the end I know that 20 vs 30 is a long debate but if I can quite the engine down and have a higher oil pressure I am switching.

Not sure I understand the question completely but I believe the oil pressure sensor is right at the filter output. The needle on the gauge is noticeably higher at idle and at speed using 5w-30 in both the Tundra and LC.

The dealer did an unwanted oil change on my truck when I went in for a battery warranty exchange. I can the difference between 20 and 30. When I go through a drive-thru now, I feel kinda embarrassed. The truck sounds so loud with the noise resonating off the building. With the 30 it's a whole lot quieter.

Yes it generally does. Some parts rely on the film strength of the oil to keep parts separated(piston rings, cams, rockers, timing chains, etc) and higher weight oils generally have higher film strength. This is why you see a single engine that might be spec'd for 0W-20 or 5W-30 in normal use but the same engine can be spec with 15W-50 for "track" use. The 5.0 Coyote is a great example as well as the 6.2L in certain versions of Camaro/Corvettes.

If I was towing with my 1UR or 3UR, which I do, I would 100% be using something heavier than 0W-20, which I do. In fact, I think I have 10W-30 in there right now.

Definitely much quieter on 5w30, by 5k though its starts to get a bit noisy again and thats why I do 5k changes. By 5k the oil has probably sheered it self down to a 0w20, imagine what 0w20 sheers it self down to.

In the end, it won't hurt anything. The Tundra is spec'ed of 20-30 & 40

I dont use Amsoil myself but their data sheets are great because it lets you compare the properties of their different weigh oils side by side. These a values you usually can't find from other oil mfgs.

    upload_2023-2-17_14-5-5.jpg

So the NOACK improves for heavier weight oils but also oils with closer numbers(IE the 0W-20 has worse NOACK than 5W-20, but 0W-30 also is not great because of the huge weight spread and 5W-30 gets better. 10W-30 is fantastic)

HTHS improves as the hot weight increases.

So if I used amsoil I would be running 5W-20 if I was insistent on a 20 weight oil, or 10W-30 unless I lived in Canada or something where I was constantly cold starting the truck in -40 temps. I rarely true cold start my cars since they live in an insulated garage that rarely gets below freezing so I don't mind running 10W.

I'd have to see a schematic of how the system is j laid out. Where's the filter in relation to the pump?

So the reason it's reading higher pressure is because there's more pressure drop through the system with more viscous oil, not because you're magically getting more oil everywhere.

I put in some Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 back in December and have about 1k on the oil…

The motor is slightly quieter (definitely not significantly) and the tick sounds exactly the same.

I’ll probably buy some Costco Synth 0w20 for my oil changes.. change every 6,000km. Same as I do on the wife’s 2019 RAV4. I hear everyone’s argument about the fuel economy regulations.. my 2010 Lexus IS350 gets 5w30 Mobil 1.. and that car is from Quebec where it gets colder then here in Southwestern Ontario.. makes you wonder where the 0w20 came from..

I’ve been using Amsoil 0w-20 since new, I’m at 40k and still quiet as new, mine has no ticks, change it once a year, not much more than off the shelf oil, being a dealer has its perks lol

I follow him, he does know a thing or 2. But, I will say that when it come to what he's taking about, Toyota themselves advertise that the 5.7 can use all the way up to 15-40. I believe that the highest. It's been posted on here a time or 2. So if we go on clearances, then there is no issue with Toyota.

While is interesting sometimes to have these discussions, one has to think does it really matter. I would venture to say that the majority of the people will never see the benefits of what fluids they use on their vehicles. If you keep your vehicles for let's say 100k, you will not see that Amsoil oil pay out. And the next guy used Walmart oil all those miles and nothing happened. Keeping up with maintenance is key.

Holy crap. Didn't know it was that high. I wouldn't go 40 or 50 regardless. My Chevy 5.7 on my boat uses 20w-50. But that thing cruising revs at 3-4k.

I have used T6 15w40 in the summer without any issues but for ease of only having to buy one oil I think I'll just stick with 5w30.

I wish they still sold the rotella gas truck oil it was a good deal, I get a little nervous using the T6 Only because it's not safe for catalytic converters but it shouldn't really matter as long as you're not burning oil.

Rotella Gas Truck was extremely mediocre from what I remember. If you could get it for a good price then sure.

I remember advance auto had it for super cheap for a long time but there isnt one within an hour of me and they wouldnt ship

It actually beat out Mobile 1 on Project Farms tests and it was cheaper. I ran it til it got discontinued, now run Mobile 1 5w30.
