Biggest issue it causes is oil consumption.

Statistically...which of these grades of oil lead to oil-related engine failure?

is there a bell curve available to ponder?

My wife’s 19’ Rav4 uses 0w16 and sounds like it has marbles in it sometimes when she pulls it into the garage. I’ve been having the dealer do the free oil changes but I think those are used up now. Curious if switching to 0w20 may be a better move even for the Rav.

I may make the switch to something different. Is there anything to be concerned about as far as engine tolerance etc?

not if you read the Toyota owners manual.

it says it in plain English...run what you want.

listen up....engines don't fail (due to oil) if you keep the proper level of oil in them.....EVER.

Go to Costco...get a bunch 0w20 or 5w-30. you will save $ and sleep well.

I'll swat the hornet's nest again....

    I used Costco 0w20 to dyno my S/C 2020.

then I sent a sample to blackstone.

The costco oil was unfazed by the ~5000miles & ~18 dyno pulls.

    That is not anecdotal.

yes, I change every 5k - you should too.
    and I use Toyota filters.

the point...use whatever oil you want...even Costco 0w-20 kicks ass.

    just keep it filled properly.

What happens if the molybdenum coating on the piston skirts starts coming off? Can the analyzer distinguish between oil molybdenum and skirt molybdenum?

I'd have to look. I buy in bulk. I went to HPLs open house that they hosted recently to check out their blending facility and got to talk to some of the leaders in the oil industry, and they had 25% off their oils if you signed up and went to it. I believe it was around $7.50/qt with the discount, so $10/qt. And I'll be running this for around 20k/OCI, so it comes out really cheap per mile, plus all the benefits of running their oil (esters/ANs)

If you want to extend your drain intervals, or just want to run an amazing oil, I highly recommend it. If you like 5k OCIs, then keep running whatever you're running.

These same engine manufacturers recommended 5w oil for those exact same cold starts just 15 years ago. What changed?

exactly. The 4.7 didn’t call for 0w-20. I don’t think anyone would call that a “looser tolerance” engine. 0w-20 is bullshit if you live below the frost line

I totally agree that the move to 0w20 is entirely CAFE driven. But I have frequently read that much of the wear a vehicle gets is in the period before your oil gets to 212 degrees. It seems like the 0w oils would be an improvement in any environment. What is the downside of a thin oil at startup?

my commute is a few miles & 10 minutes. My oil doesn’t get to temp on my daily commute. For my use, I’m still thinking 0w30 would be better than 5w anything. Am I off base?

If we went back in history far enough, ie my dad, one would find arguments that 5w oil was too thin and 10w was better.

im running 6 qts of 5w-20 and 2 qt 5w-30 this change because thats what i had in the garage. I run 5w-30 plenty of times too.

my wife’s honda has 5w-20 right now. Sounds light years better than it did on 0w-20.

Did the oil sample you sent to Blackstone come from the piston groves that support the oil ring? Did you disassemble the engine to get the sample? Thats were the oil gets carbonized which causes the oil ring to get stuck and not conform to the cylinder wall causing scuffing and excessive oil consumption. change your oil every 5-7K miles.

If your oil has the correct Chemistry and detergents, you don't have to worry about carbon build up or stuck rings, some oils even free carbonized rings and remove build up. 5-7k is a waste of money.

This video was actually brought up at the open house, and it was absolutely obliterated. Don't trust some random youtube mechanic, but if you want to, then by all means, do so. I'll trust the people who have put their life into making great oils, who have literally written the books and developed today's oil as we know it.
