Hmmmmm, maybe stomping the throttle results in better gas mileage, but I never look at the numbers, because jimmy crack corn, and I don’t care.

what ever additive pack is in the fuel economy oil makes my engine sound not happy. I switched away from that stuff.

i would throw that K&N filter right in the trash as well.

we're not driving air cooled engines on a manual transmission, i would not worry about "lugging" a 3URFE lol

I hate you all..... I've been averaging about 11-12 mpg for the entire time I've owned my truck.

Motor type doesn't matter, same principle applies. Pushing around at low RPM is a waste of time and it doesn't save fuel.

Ethanol has a lower energy content than gasoline; if only I could buy ethanol-free gas in California (that isn't also racing fuel).

The 5.7L loves a liberal application of the gas pedal... I stomp on the throttle as needed, when needed, and whenever it seems like the right thing to do. If this helps my mileage, so be it. If it doesn't help my mileage, so be it.

I’ve tested this myself. Pussyfooting the gas pedal to get up to speed made no difference. Giving it average throttle up to speed, then lugging a long works best. I used to try and just let the truck slowly gain speed either from a stop or after losing speed from a hill, it seem to just be better if I let the engine do the work to get me to the speed where I need to be. I’ve also tested lugging a gear up a hill or downshifting and letting the RPM hum me up that hill. A little more rpm putting me in the power band gave me better mileage. It was easy to test this when I had a manual transmission. Picture a steep hill and you can lug fourth up it, downshift to third so the RPM rises, big difference. Plus it’s just more enjoyable!

I used to make the same trip every other week to go dirt bike riding. I left early in the morning so traffic was always pretty much the same. I tested this theory multiple times and I always fared better not lugging the truck up the grapevine.

No LOL that would be inconsistent. Usually there, back and fill up when I get home.

LMFAO!!! Must be our area! I’m 10.1-10.3 constantly since moving to 35’s.
    I remember 3 years ago with AT’s vs MT’s I was 12’s.
It’s funny, the wife will steal the Tundra and the gauge will change to 12’s.

I meant cylinder pressure, sorry. You are correct, compression is always fixed.

Here's a cool link about brake specific fuel consumption that can explain it way better than I can
    https://x-engineer.org/automotive-e...ormance/brake-specific-fuel-consumption-bsfc/

The effect of temps on engine off always fascinated me too, especially now that auto stop is really becoming a thing. There are many reports of engines with cylinder deactivation developing oil consumption problems. Another one, most Toyotas don't use much oil; however, the Priuses (Priui?) over 200k miles can use quite a bit after their time in engine-off electric mode. The water pump would stop, the water in the radiator would cool quickly while the car is in motion, and the hot water rising from the block would open the thermostat up... then the motor is restarted and the mass of cold water goes into the block right to the cylinder sleeves, not closing the thermostat until it reaches the outlet.

20191023_165405.jpg I am not an expert nor a scientist but my mpgs have gotten better after changing my differential fluids. When I say better they go up quicker than before. My display would just stay at 16.5 area. Now it will go up faster if I travel more constant, I do mostly highway miles everyday so there is that. Don't forget the K&N filter plus these additives.20191023_163950.jpgI am sure some master mechanic is going to chime in, but results are results.

I recently did a road trip from niagara falls to new brunswick canada about 2000km (1200 miles) one way. On my way down my uncle who is in his 70's was following me so I was driving real smooth, I avg 12.5 l/100 km (23mpg) my best ever, on the way back I was by myself and drove like I normally do and avg 15 l/100km (19 mpg) so it does make quite a difference.
But my truck is stock with michelin defender LTX tires. In the winter I run duratracs with toyota steel rim and milage goes up 2 l/100 km right away.
