Stomping it for better mileage?

    What's going on, y'all?

So, I don't know if anyone else is noticing this but when I drive like an old man and just cruise, I get shit gas mileage, but when I haul, my mileage jumps exponentially. Has anyone seen this or am I just out of my mind?

    Edit:
Just want to clarify, that's with me just driving around town or highway. Consensus seems to be that I'm just crazy. I'll drive myself to the looney bin.

:mudding:I like the theory. Getting there faster could actually be more gas efficient.

If you drive more highway miles you will get better mpg. I drive mostly highway, but residential I get much worse mpg

Interesting. I get worse on the highway driving 80mph than just driving around town.

I'm not sure because I floor it everywhere I go. Nothing to compare it to. I refuse to cruise like an old man because getting passed by another vehicle is a sign of weakness.

Keeping it at 2,000 RPM is going to get you the best MPG.

I've several long distance road trips, while driving 80 is easy, it's hard on the mileage. Sticking the cruise on 70 got me best mileage, even saw 21 on the display at one point but that was running second tank of Premium from Costco, actually planned on hitting Costco for fuel stops. In the end I don't think it was worth the extra cost.

    Bingo.

There is no way premium could ever increase MPGs enough to justify extra cost. I saw $1+bump for premium on Saturday. I get best with a steady foot between 65 and 70. These trucks will beat EPA numbers on hwy at these speeds. Stop and go rush hour traffic kills my MPGs. V8 get terrible mpgs when idling. Of course all others do too. They are just not burning as much. No way you are going to do better mashing the pedal.

I think I get about 1mpg better if I use my foot instead of cruise control out on the highway. Not the best test, but one trip to Vegas I used cruise control doing 70 to 75 mph and got 16 mpg. Next trip decided to use my foot and did over 80 the entire trip with short bursts over 100 to pass. I got 16.7 MPG. WTF! One discrepancy that kind of throws that all out the window, the first trip I was in traffic getting out of the city, then wide-open the rest away. Second trip no traffic. So it’s kind of a wash. This was all hand calculated BTW

I noticed on my last trip that on my way up to Roswell my MPG was around 16.8. Same route on the way back was considerably lower. IIRC about 14.9 or something. Guess what changed?

Tail wind on the way up. Headwind on the way back. Winds prevailing out of the south for both days. Those trucks push a lot of air.

Yep wind is a huge factor. I deal with it often going to hunting ranch. With my luck I hit pre front headed south and post front headed home going north

Yeah I always get better gas mileage coming home going west. That’s why I only compared the trips east.

I get worse milage with premium. Don't have the higher compression that premium needs

With the $1 bump on premium, I would have to agree with you. However, here in the PNW, our gas prices usually jump in about $.10 increments, so premium being roughly $.40 more over standard.
I did a little experiment a couple years back in my Tacoma. I'd run a couple tanks of premium through and compare it to my mileage with regular. I did in fact get better gas mileage with the premium, however when I broke it down to $/mile , the overall cost was the same due to the added cost of the premium.

I found that if I blow through stop signs and red lights I gain a few tenths per gallon. Just gotta remember to look both ways when approaching. Haven't been pulled over yet so it's working out well so far.

I also started paying attention to the weather forecast to plan my trips according to wind direction.

Strictly going by the numbers the truck spits out, 67 or 68 are the speeds on mostly flat roads where I get the best mpg. Driving between Portland area and the Eugene area I was able to get about 23 mpg on several trips. That was using cruise control and setting it at 67, 68 tops. If I set it at 70+, mileage stalled then slowly dropped.

However- I have noticed that if I baby-foot the gas getting going from a stop, I get worse mileage than if I step on it and get up to speed quickly, and then back off the gas.

So, I think there is something to what the OP is saying, at least relative to acceleration from the many stops on a trip.

WOT keeps carbon from building up, the less carbon build up your engine has the more fuel efficient your engine is. This doesn't always translate into higher MPGs, but the engine does run better.

I had similar experiences with my Tacoma. If you are putzing around to 'go easy on it' you're getting crap mileage that whole time because you end up spending all your time in lower gears. The idea is to be in high gear for as long as possible. I'm not saying to floor it off the line every time, but a quick/moderate acceleration up to top gear can have it's benefits. YMMV
