Well as your bigger tires impact different objects it transfers that energy to your steering box or rack. Your power steering protects that energy transferring to the steering wheel but the hardware in the rack is taking a beating and often fails. The bigger the tires the more forces like using a bigger wrench. A hydraulic ram takes the energy from the tires and protects the steering box and adds power to move those 40s. Imagine 3500 lbs over the front axle with 40s aired down to 10psi. Your footprint is 2 feet long at times. That takes a ton of force to turn and often times one has to be rolling to turn those things. But more important if you hit something at a bad angle that hydro assist ram will take the shot and let your steering box live another day

Yeah that totally makes sense. We have 37s and blew our rack in the middle of Broken Arrow trail in Sedona, aired down. Had to arm wrestle that fucker back out the way we came in and I quit my gym membership. Got lucky and the dealer warrantied the rack for us.
@papasmurf did some looking into having a Howe rack fabbed for the Tundra. Ended up being pretty pricey. I think your idea could be a nice compromise without so much cost.
