As of last Monday I switched from union to company(management) trying to find their symbol would be more work then it’s worth. I’ll probably still pay dues to maintain my fallback rights. But then again maybe not.

You know; at an early age it became apparent to me that sub stations were no joke. To me they are an un nerving ominous presence especially in quite neighborhoods, the way they are gated, and have that eerie hum, I had no desire to scale that fence even in my wildest days. My hat s off to you:hattip:

I'm confused, it doesn't take much.

So you are now management and you are still union?
Around here you or either an hourly union employee (if you chose to pay dues in this right to work state), or you are non-union management.
As well in this right to work state, the union still has to represent all hourly workers whether you are in the union (and pay dues) or not (don't pay dues).

Ok. I’ll try to clarify without going off an a tangent about my personal experience.
Management(Supervisors and above) are non union. I should probably verify if I still have to pay dues to maintain fallback rights. I believe this is the case but haven’t checked yet. It’s a tax deduction anyway so it wasn’t a big deal either way for me. We have the right to choose to be in the union as well(journeymen) but if you choose not to they deduct your dues and you donate to a charity.

    Ok.
Where I work, you go into management and that is it, you can't go back to hourly, not even part timers.

So many new young part time employees are talked into going into part time management with how wonderful it is.
They do it, then get sh!t on, then they quit.
They have no option of going back to their hourly position..

Perhaps it because Oregon is not a right-to-work state like it is in Texas..
Or maybe our contracts have different languages on the issue..

The majority of hourly workers that have been around awhile would have NO intention of going into to management.
We know how management are treated and how the company works..

Hope it works out for you..

It’s in our contract. I could fall back within 5 years and maintain seniority. Then if I wanted to I could reapply for management later. I obviously hope it works out too. I have zero intention on falling back but it’s nice to know I can. I am trying not to bad mouth either side(here) but I see and understand your reasoning on why(your/our) senior guys wouldn’t want to make the switch. This was my first union job. The only reason I didn’t apply for this spot 5 years ago when I came to this company is because I didn’t have union/nonunion shop experience. I decided along time ago while having a few less then stellar bosses in the Marine Corps that before you can be a good leader you have to be a good follower. I went through the apprenticeship program, made a good name for myself and built good relationships. So now the mechanics know that I have been there, done those jobs and I’m not just some “outside” guy.

    You did it right..
You've worked there for 5 years and know what you are getting into..

I'm not anti management nor am I 'pro union'.
I'm a Teamster by circumstance, I don't even have to pay union dues.
But I can't have a National Union get me the pay and benefits I have and not pay for them to represent me.
That would pretty much make me a scab..
It's the do nothing Local I don't care much for.

Management pretty much leaves me alone.
I do what is expected of me and rarely ever hear from them..

    Cross Craft ftw!
In my world, management unfortunately likes to hire supervisors with a fancy piece of paper, over someone in the crafts with real world experience.
