Unless you like headaches and unnecessary trips to the dealership don’t buy the first year models. Let others that are so anxious to get one live through the growing pains that WILL surface, and then get one once the bugs are worked out.

I don't know personally of any Tundra owners (a few) that pay attention to payload numbers. I have never given it a second thought. Load her up. The driving dynamics have never suffered.

I am right there with you, but some guys keep discussing it adnauseum and posting specs of hypotheticals. It’s a half ton truck and not a very stout one, if you are worried about payload buy a F150 with max tow or a 3/4 ton truck.

The only reason this new truck has been an interest to me is because of what I can get $$$ as trade in on a new vehicle.
But the more I look into this 2022 Tundra.....well lets wait till I actually see and drive it to speak more.

My trade in is worth the same at the other brands. But the only two I would consider Tremor and Rebel seem to have bad consumer experiences.
I don't want to take my boring pretty uneventful Tundra ownership - knock on wood so far - for granted.

    Agreed!

From what I’ve seen so far it’s not really providing much better fuel mileage than the reliable dinosaur most of us are already driving. That guy with the door lock issue got 16. something from Texas to Nebraska with just him in the vehicle, heck I just got 18.4 on a 750 mile road trip through the Rockies loaded down.

That's expected. The Ford 3.5 Eco is only 2 mpg better than the old Tundra on Fuelly, while the EPA is 6 mpg better. I'd guess the manufacturers are tuning to optimize for the EPA test, but Toyota never did that on the old Tundra.

Honestly that thing probably idled a lot prior to purchase. And I noticed that is total mpg not tank average. When I first picked up my truck with 10 miles on it, it have an average of 8 mpg’s on that screen. Now after 10k my total average is 17.5. I think the new Tundra is going to get on par if not SLIGHTLY better than the 5th 4Runner which was about 20ish.

It’s not what I expected. The Tundra has not had any advancement to the drive train in 14 years, and the revolutionary all new 3rd gen Toyota is barely competitive with what Ford, GM and Ram have had out for 10 years? Pretty pathetic if you ask me. A GM 5.3 or 6.2 in stock form will easily get 20 mpg on the highway and have for many years. The F150 Eco’s will get 20 mpg on the highway in stock form. Hello even my Ram 1500 would get 19-20 on the highway, I don’t expect the all new Tundra to get 16 and change on a 1,000 mile highway trip with one person in the vehicle. I sure as hell hope that’s a fluke and any idle time while at the dealership would be irrelevant when he topped off the truck for the ride home and reset the fuel mileage and trip. It’s weird that with all the new 2022’s that have been bought there’s still zero fuel mileage reports.

That's an anecdote. Speed and wind can make a huge difference. Plus, in the first 1,000 miles on my truck I was constantly cycling the throttle to break it in... not good for MPG.

It'll be as good as the competition on average... which is good enough IMO.

On another forum someone commented that Toyota has had so many years to make this redesign perfect, they should have nailed it. That's delusional. The Tundra is a low volume vehicle, and they have only so many $$$ they can afford to invest. Time is irrelevant, man-hrs are not. Ford and GM each sell ~7x as many trucks, so they can afford much bigger R&D budgets.

The features and tech are never going to be class leading. Hopefully reliability still will be.

Going to call BS on this. My 2018 Silverado 1500 I drove for work has never broken 17 mpg on the highway. I’m at 84k miles on it, so it’s had plenty of chances.

Im not mad at anyone, I don’t even pay any mind to the sticker in the door jamb, but these members that obsess over possibilities from advertising specs need to if they are that concerned. I’m in the load it to where your comfortable camp. I’ve posted this pic before, couldn’t even tell you what my door jamb said but I’ll easily state that I’m over what ever it says. There’s 800+ lbs just in the bed.

I’m not here to debate GM fuel mileage averages. I’m telling you that if you fill the tank and zero the trip mileage on most of them you will get close to or over 20 mpg if you hit the highway and drive non stop for 400-500 miles. Hell fuelly will attest to that if you look at what guys get on their better tanks. Average is all your driving day to day and NO they will not average 20 mpg for a week or two of driving around….geez

And all I am pointing out and suggesting is that many 1/2 tons don’t get that much better than the 2.5 gen Tundra. Better yes but not significantly. I have averaged just over 19 when I did an entire tank cruising on the highway at 70. I have family members and close friends that own F150 (V8’s and 3.5 EB), Chevy 1500’s and Rams not the classic 1500 (whatever the rounder body style is). Yes they all get better mpg’s but all within 1-2 mpg’s of my Tundra.

Thats pretty accurate though I’d say it’s more like 2-3 mpg better on average. The Tundra doesn’t do to bad as long as your not in places like Texas. Running 80-85 mph you will experience the larger gap between the big 3 and the Tundra. When I lived in Texas my Tundra was a 15.5-16 mpg truck on the highways all day every day where as my 3.5 Eco regularly got 18-19 running the higher speeds, both had 33” LT tires, the F150 did have 4 more gears though.

My 2017 work chevy average is around 17mpg on a good day.. 91k miles in and over $10k in repairs on dumb shit (including a blown transmission that was replaced under warranty). I’ll take the mpg hit in my tundra to not have it literally strand me annually somewhere in the boonies like the chevy. Friggin turdburgers.

yup, none of us are driving Tundras because they get really good fuel mileage or they are the latest and greatest, everything is a trade off.

He was driving through a wind/snowstorm. You can expect over 20 mpg on normal highway driving as has been proven by many new tundra owners.

I’ve seen 3 reviews in the last month or so reporting mileage of 16-18 mpg. It’s not just him, I did expect more from stock trucks with weenie 36lb tires

No what you’ll start hearing first is …..”it’s not broke in yet, the mileage will get better when it breaks in or learns your driving style” That’s my favorite, I’ve owned 20 new trucks in my life and the mileage was virtually the same on the first tank as it was on the last!
