The tfl video where they put the 5.7 hemi vs the new 2022 tundra towing up hill the hemi got BETTER gas mileage lol the better gas mileage of the ttv6 disappears when towing. I think he's right, they made this new tundra for city commuters.

Pretty much. I know tons of people who bought Ecoboosts when they first came out - and were almost literally irate when they found out that while it towed easier, the mileage was worse when towing. I mean....you can have boost and you can have mileage, but almost never can you have both at the same time.

Wait a year or so I’m sure there will be bugs that need to be worked out. Personally would never in my life jump on a new vehicle that just came out with a new engine option. that’s just asking for trouble. It’s your money tho do how you please. I think after next year you will be happier you waited personally.

Look. I am considering dropping real money down on one of these trucks.
In order to do that i need to "form an opinion"
If anyone can't handle opinions "all opinions" which I believe general forums are for.
Then better not to watch to this thread. Remember for me it is still all theory.
Waiting on dealer call to go see one.

Facts. Turbo diesel is another thing though. I'm a big fan of turbo diesel. Being that diesels have significantly higher torque and are more fuel efficient I don't know why they didn't go that route.
Yea I get it, I'm not salty lol

I will say though, I think plenty of information has been provided for you to go off. Want a more city oriented truck with more tech go 2022. Want a proven design that will get better mileage towing but has less tech go 2021.

I was recently faced with the same choice. My signature tells which way I went.

I feel that, but my experience with my 2012 f250 has been very good. In nearly 200k miles I've had very few issues. Low maintenance other than usual oil changes and what not (oil changes aren't cheap), no spark plugs to change, significantly better mileage than my new tundra while towing with the diesel and absolutely ridiculous better mileage when not towing with the diesel. It's tough to say the downsides out way the upsides when it comes to diesels.

Initial cost is higher than gas engines but the better mileage outweighs that I think.

If you drive and tow a lot, than yeah, diesel will win every time.

Maybe if you are driving lots of miles. At 15k miles/yr the old Tundra is the cheapest full size to own. Resale and reliability trump mpg.

Has your diesel been deleted? I'd thought about getting a Sprinter, but the emissions issues looked pretty extreme, and no delete kits for those.

The 2022 has ~14% lower 1st gear so you can't say it's lacking vs the prior model in that respect... but it would have made sense to be ~30%; nice for towing, nice for running 37s without needing a regear. His excuses for why the locker isn't an upgrade are lame.

This forum and this thread has been invaluable so far. I believe in putting all opinions out there.
Just remember in my case I have 2018 since new, I got a good discount when I bought it and now I am being offered more than $5000 more than I paid for it including the taxes (out the door). When does something like that ever happen? Of course I have never paid near MSRP for any vehicle either.

Anyway that's what started all this thinking about the new truck and this thread.

Gotta admit though it does look good when good tires and rims go on it.

His comments about tow hooks and a rear locker are contradictory. I agree with him that any 1/2 ton isn’t ideal as a off road vehicle. “Put tow hooks in theie most off-road worthy vehicle” or something to that effect…. Yet he bash’s buyer’s that wanted the locking rear diff. The Tundra is NOT the most off-road worthy. And I am not defending Toyota’s decision to remove them.

Yes, and you'd be surprised at the resale value of 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. Even for around town I get very good mpg for a heavy truck. I'm in no way taking anything away from tundra, I definitely like them and bought one.

For the same style of driving I get 5 to 6 mpg better than my trd pro. I get around 2 mpg better towing 6k than my tundra empty which blows my mind. I can get 20+ unloaded on the highway.

Here is the thing though, TFL has stated multiple times that RAM's fuel gauge is way off, why didnt they calculate the fuel at the pump vs the gauge? The 22 tundra smoked the gen 2 in towing power, speed AND MILEAGE by a big margin.

You'd have to ask him, I just watched the video. As far as the 22 out doing the Gen 2's I would hope a smaller engine turbo'd to work harder would do better. Longevity? I have my opinion. 3.31 vs 4.30 gearing? I have my opinion on that as well.

I'll don't mind anyone else's opinions, heck everyone buy what they like. My opinion is what it is, that's why I bought a 21 trd pro.

I bet over time you'll see more posting that the towing mpg of the new gen isn't great or even significantly better. If at all.

I'd like your opinion on the 2022 3.31 gearing versus Gen 2 4.30 gearing?

I seem to always have my truck loaded to the max - and I will tell you I have loaded probably past max rating many times.
So not towing alot, but hauling almost always.

    Question
If I am using a 2022 Tundra will it not be in boost mode alot based on the gearing, if I am hauling close to max payload and going up large hills, rolling curvy terrain, where you are forced to slow down and then speed up again going uphill?

With the 2018 5.7 liter all that is needed is taps on the gas occasionally maybe 1/4 throttle going up a large grade.

Anyone who ever thought they were would get better mpg towing with the new engine is an idiot and deserves to be made a fool of. That being said, I'm pretty sure no one here is towing 100% of the time (if they were they probably wouldn't be in a 1/2 ton) and therefore that remainder of the time they are getting better mpg.

I can almost guarantee you the new engine will get better gas mileage towing than the gen2. The gen2 got the worst gas mileage of any truck, not a hard benchmark to beat

4.30 gears are better for towing, off road, and general low end grunt. At the expense of some mpg. If you tow more, or carry heavier payloads both of which benefit from 4.30 gears you'll be glad to have them.

The 3.31 gearing will have better mpg at the expense of those things I said above.

I prefer the 4.30 rear end.

Also, the link/coil vs leaf springs is something to consider as well. Since you will tow/carry payloads.

It appears to me, from the 3.31 gearing, lack of tow hooks, coils that the 2022 is marketed and designed for guys who don't tow as much or carry as much payload, ie. City driving where the unloaded vehicle will really benefit from the better mpg of the ttv6.

How important are the tech updates to you? If you're primarily unloaded/empty cruising around the creature comforts of the new generation may be what you want.

The 2021 will have better turning radius, proven longevity, 4.30 rear end. Less failure points because it has less new tech, and many years of finding and working out kinks because it's been around so long.

It was an easy choice for me, as I plan to keep the truck for as long as it will last. If you plan on switching vehicles often the long term issues that are yet to be determined on the new gen are less an issue.

The history of ttv6 towing says otherwise. The ecoboost is well known to get terrible milage towing. Will it be slightly better mpg than the ecoboost? Time will tell. Nothing to right home about though.

I think you have a little 2021 bias in there, which I understand but..

the gearing argument you're making isn't valid when the 10-speed trans and torque peak are included.

And the new truck, while some head scratching over tow hooks I agree with, does have a higher payload and more towing, so I think its a little unfair to say or allude to the 2021 being more capable of a towing and hauling truck.

the TTv6 will likely walk away from the 2021 pulling is my guess since it has 479 lbs at 2400 rpm running through shorter overall ratios, all those are significantly better than the 5.7, which I have do like BTW.
