Mine sounded exactly like post 20 as well. It’s in the shop right now getting lifters and cam gears replaced on the driver side. Covered under powertrain warranty.

Any reason on the cause for replacements?

You may want to consider using a modern, low oil PEA fuel system cleaners. I used that in my 2006 Corolla XRS and the check engine light came on and needed to replace an oxygen sensor.

MMO is 70% Naphthenic Hydrocarbons. 29% Mineral Spirits. Used in gas its more of a upper cylinder lube than it is a cleaner.

My guess the reason my check engine light came on would be a P0420 catalyst efficiency CEL flooded the cat and o2 sensors with oil/lubricant. In the old days with lower catalyst efficiency standards (pre-2002) there would be no issue. Today catalytic converters are held to a higher efficiency (+-90%). So, if you if you have some miles, you've been burning oil for a while, etc. your cat may be on the edge of efficiency producing a catalyst efficiency CEL until you burn off the MMO.

    First attempt they replaced:
lifters & cam gears on driver's side
    both timing chain tensioners
    camshaft pulley assembly
    valve adjusters
    cylinder head gaskets
    valve arm subassembly

It was still making noise. They opened it back up & took it down further.

    Second attempt they replaced:
    head on driver's side

That fixed it. Now there's noise on passenger's side. So they're tearing that side down & will be replacing the head. They said pass side might have been making noise all along, just not as much as driver's side, & it was getting drowned out by loud driver's side.

They said the noise was caused by the valves not getting oiled like they should to the top of the engine.

Disclaimer: 95% of this post is Greek to me. I'm just regurgitating what I've been told by someone at Toyota who likely understands all of this stuff only 10% more than I do. lol
