I posted the second angle because it is a little more obvious. The back two holes shouldn't look like that and the powdercoat cracked. I must have dropped down onto a large rock. In the last picture if you look between the back two holes, you can sort of see that there was a rock wedged in there, it must have broken off of whatever did the damage.
The sliders did their job, no new damage to the truck!

The sliders just saved you money:rofl:. Seriously, it looks like it might've saved you from a good rocker dent. Probably happened going up that hill that I couldn't make.

Yep, they have already paid for themselves. I might have a little too much confidence with them on now. They are going to be beat to hell by the time I get the BAMF sliders.

It'll be OK. That's why hammers come in various sizes.

After telling myself I was going to get this thread updated for a couple months, I finally did something about it. It isn't 100% up to date, but better than it was.

My current issue is trying to improve on the RCI 38 gallon fuel tank skid design. I'm really worried about the exposed nuts. They defeat the purpose of swapping out the stock skid, if I snag one of them on a rock, I'm going to have a really bad day.

My current idea is a "nut bumper" that would be put in place of the washer. I sent the design to a couple of companies to see what it would cost to get it machined out of stainless steel.

Good idea. You should look into making it out of derlin. I think it will resist damages better. Might be cheaper too.

I wasn't familiar with delrin, I just looked it up. Do you think that would hold up as well as stainless? If the stainless quotes come back astronomically high, I'll take a look at other materials.

I totally forgot about the bumpstops. I can't see them, so do they really exist?

Delrin is a great idea. And, I just happen to have a bunch of it. Yep, sailboat stuff.

I like it, please let me know what numbers you get back, I need something also. I do not think derlin is strong enough for this application. Mine is a little better, made shims to go in between the tank strap and skid plate because mine rubbed the tank. This allowed me to use a lower profile nut, the nylon in the nylok nuts didn’t engage the threads anyhow.

With the problems and obvious lack of thought put into the 38 gal. tank skid, no way I'd order one. I feel badly for you guys.

Derlin is used for sport bike sliders. So when the crash it slides on them. They are very strong/resistant but light and easy to mill.

Just get a stainless cap/dome and JB weld it to the bolt lol. Who’s cares about servacibility! Haha.

Good luck on your project. Keep us updated!

You gave me an idea for using Jb weld for a Delrin cap. Then I remembered even epoxy doesn't stick well to Delrin.

Here is mine shimmed down(basically put washer on top of skid instead of under), with the factory nuts. Reduced the profile a bit.40E4D9EA-EB10-4AB1-A5C7-E5EC88AF3B30.jpgB9386553-8031-4583-B377-C4E843A1DC60.jpg

I got in on the SCS Ray 10 pre-order so I'll be swapping soon. I think the ring on them is removable, so between that and getting wider tires hopefully I will be able to keep them in better shape than the Pro wheels.

Nope, not removable. You’re going to destroy those too. Not as much because you’ll have wider tires and deeper dish. But nonetheless they’ll still getting destroyed.

Can I make skid plates for my wheels out of delrin? :D No, well hopefully the wider tires will help. And maybe learning to pick better lines.

My son is 15 now so our father son Lego time doesn't really happen anymore. He has a massive collection, mostly Star Wars.
I'll never stop loving Lego. With the Ideas collection they have cool stuff coming out that even adults can enjoy. I got the Beatles Yellow Submarine for my birthday. When I saw the Saturn V, I dropped some very serious hints.

To do list for the next 8 weeks:
    • CMC
    • Spindle gussets
    • 35" General Grabber X3's on my new Ray10's
    • Resolve any excessive rubbing.
    • Mount jerry can holders.
    • Exhaust chop behind last hanger.
Anything I get done above and beyond those will be gravy.
