Or just strap it down in the bed while wheeling and throw it on the mount when camping... just a little easier

I prefer to have it mounted on the bedrail the whole time (right over the wheel-well) to free up space in the bed.
To me, this is a little easier bc I can just mount it once and then forget about it. Lives there permanently... I use it every few days to fill my camelback before I go mountain biking.

Here is a pic of my mounting solution.
6-8in long 4x4 cut to follow the bed contour and then screwed directly into the back of the mounting plate. I used pressure treated wood spray painted black to ensure it doesn't fall apart in 6 months....

I also like it up high like this so that I can get a water bottle or bladder under the output so I can fill directly from the unit using the small valve.

I never mounted it and probably never will. I tried it on the bed rack, but it interfered with the tent and wasn't thrilled with the compromise I was going to have to make to get it to work.

BedRack.... What about Bedrails? Keeps it a bit lower this way, but still out of the way. To each their own I guess. You obviously have your reasons.

Just don't ever ever EVER mount it to your tow hitch!!! :lalala:

I had a bad experience with mounting a rotopax to my bedrail, so I did bother trying the waterport on there, but your solution might get me to try it.

I’d love to see a video of you doing some decent wheeling and that thing not flopping around. Nothing that heavy attached to the bed rail isn’t gonna flail. And trying to figure out some magical way to somehow make it sturdy isn’t worth the effort in my opinion. I carry two full size spares, 2 gas cans, 2 extra water cans, all my gear plus wood or whatever in the back and still manage to have room for the Waterport back there.
