Ditto. Too far out to have any real ideas. (To some of the other comments, the financial planning for retirement is well under way. Just not sure about hobbies or toys yet.)

    Dream vehicle?
Any classic or modern muscle car
Maybe a RCSB Dodge W150 or GMT-400 like I leaned to drive on at my grandparents' farm and then mod it up all fancy

    More realistic?
GR86 or a compact hatchback or wagon for running around the city with good fuel economy

I am 38 now and can retire from my current job when I'm 56, so 18 more years for me. I've wanted one of these since high-school and that hasn't changed. Hopefully my financial planning will pay off and I can obtain one when the time comes (no more working and no more kids in the house.)

I’ve been storing a ‘67 Mercedes 230, gasoline not diesel, for decades. My great grandparents were living in Europe and ordered it from the factory. Our last name is incorporated in the serial number, so the provenance is special. In my teens, I used to drive my great grandmother back and forth from Pomona/Clairmont to SD for family visits, and she ultimately gave me the car. I haven’t had time or money to devote to restoration, so it will be a retirement project.

Now that’s a cool story about the 230!

Those desert racing trucks sure have a way of emptying the fun money account rather quickly.

Lol! Yes. It was an either/or decision, during these kid-raising years. I’m good that I chose the side with all the cool new friends who teach me stuff!

My tundra has never been to a ‘job’. Grandpa bought it when he retired, and I got it after I’d retired. Like it’s been on jackstands all weekend for fitting a skid plate, and 200 miles early of the oil change…it’s getting its oil change tonight, but I’ll ride my bike to town until I bend up some leaf spring skid bars and bolt em on. I’m on the lookout for a cheap manual vw diesel wagon to turn into a rig for running a pair of 15kw pto generators. I guess I’d trade what I’ve got, bike for bike with a flying brick bmw k1 for the xb9r. Air cooled duc multistrada for the xb12x. 5.8 2wd single cab shortbed ford for the titan. I’m keeping my s10 blazer and ‘96 xj, but I might trade to turdra for the right big body wagon.

I guess my proper retirement vehicle was the ‘03 xb9r. After needing a truck everyday across Houston for a few years, it felt good to leave that and get back on a sportbike.

I'll tell you... It's been weird being on a 'fixed' income. On one end of the spectrum it's nice to never worry about your income going up or down based on economy, etc. Plus, not having to put up w/BS that most jobs bring because you are vested in the employer/career is huge. As an example, I know @MARanger has been struggling w/frustration at work. Once the fruits of that frustration are realized and you're actually getting benefits from them, it starts to help balance the BS; however, in the meantime, it can really suck!!!

But, on the other end, it's hard to have to budget w/o the extra kicks of working OT or Holidays, etc... Not being able to just dump $3-$5k on a CC for a purchase on a whim, home repairs/upgrades or for a trip somewhere and then work some OT to pay it off real quick can be difficult at first. We don't 'worry' about money now, but we are much more conscientious about a lot of little stuff.

One piece of advice I have, especially for anyone that will be entering retirement before they are eligible for medicare is to find a way to maintain a healthcare policy that is similar or identical to what you are accustomed to. For us, I pay for "retiree healthcare" through my previous employer and can do so until we become eligible for Medicare. The rate isn't cheap, but it's much easier to maintain budget that way. For us it's basically the COBRA cost minus $100 per each 5 years of service time. So, for us about $600/month for premium coverage and very small/if any deductibles.

Also during our last 10 years of employment, in addition to dumping money into a 457, we also created an HSA (healthcare savings account), which works somewhat like a 401k or 457 in that you select investment fund types, etc, but it is used for any eligible medical expense. So, money goes into that account tax free and comes out of the account tax free (since it is HSA). We pay our monthly premiums, deductibles and dental/vision stuff (these have highest co-pays or lack of coverage) out of that account. Almost zero costs come out of our budget because it is paid out of the HSA. We just don't get the write offs at the end of the year for medical since the account was already tax deferred (if that makes sense)...

I like it. Put a big old bush bumper on the front, some more aggressive tires and you have yourself a zombie apocalypse bug out vehicle.

I'm a long way off still , but i will have three lol my tundra as long as I am still able to climb in it, my dad's 84 c10, and for really old me that will likely have issue climbing into something or controlling the speed of the c10, a 1st gen taco 5 lug. I'm looking to buy a 1st gen taco 5 lug right now for my sons first vehicle and when he's done with it, I will start my old man resto/rebuild for my later years hahaha

When I became poa for my parents i saw this not work out so well first hand. My truck is paid for , my wife's car almost and our house will be well before retirement. We don't carry cc debt , so my goal is a debt free retirement. I don't plan on buying anymore vehicles for me, my wife probably will have a new one or two. We still have 27 years to go though

My ‘15 Pro is my planned retirement vehicle. Bought it 3 years before retirement so that registration and insurance would drop off before the retirement. Working out pretty well. It’s only got about 21,000 miles and I keep her in the garage. We’re mostly using the wife’s ‘05 Tacoma, that now has over 250,000 miles and going strong. The fixed income thing is interesting. It’s why I’m selling knives. I’d always been into blacksmithing but didn’t expect this knife bug to bite me so deep. Started out as a pure hobby but the costs of materials and equipment made it impossible for me to pursue without selling some.

The big question is do you know yet what you want to be when you grow up?

My goal was to be a really old man with no memory. I think I’m gonna make it!

Healthcare Marketplace worked out great for us retiring at 59. As long as you can keep your income below the threshold until Medicare kicks in at 65 you can get a high deductible policy ($7,500) for close to nothing with the subsidies.

Set yourself up before retirement to be debt free and limit distributions like pensions, IRAs, dividends from brokerage accounts, etc. and take cash withdrawals for living expenses from selling bonds or equities from funds with no large capital gains.

Your tax return will look like you are dirt poor.

That is what the wife and I will be dealing with retiring at 50 in 2.5 years (Sept 2024 I’m eligible) and she can in 5 years. Healthcare can really suck up your monthly income if not prepared.

Yeah, it also really helps to be healthy and blessed (or lucky) with a high deductible policy, lol. We ended up paying the max out of pocket several years for my wife but that's OK.

GR Supra added to my list. Pretty affordable as well (relative). Was looking at used 2022 with under 5k miles for 48k.

Have you ever been in a 997? Those cars will make you fall in love. A buddy had one until his first brake job (16k) and he sold it. Lmao. Brakes are not cheap on performance cars.
