Do you guys think plastidip would work on chrome rims? If so, how many coats should I apply?

Full disclosure: I will be buying shares of plasti-dip today. Does anyone think this is a good investment? Thanks in advance.

Shame this thread went sideways with talk of plasti-dip and linex. I would have liked to read some suggestions or experience with removing the chrome as that's what I'd like to do as well.

My buddy has it all over his Xterra into the 3rd year, depends what it's adhering to and how it's applied/cured. He used 1 can per rim and no peeling, badges have lasted, bumpers did not. Use a gun and apply several coats so rocks don't chip the chrome.

Nah, there is. Sometimes it's under a vinyl wrap thread, sometimes it's under a color match thread, sometimes it's under a deleting chrome thread, but it's there, cause I've been interested in the same thing and have ran across it before. Search youtube as well, you can find it there.

    A bunch
Sounds like most (if not all so far) have just cleaned up then painted/wrapped/plasti-dip/bed lined right over the chrome. No need to remove it as it provides a good base to be adhered to. I know there's been other threads on removing chrome from plastic trim pieces, but not sure if the same results can be had with the metal bumper caps.

Thanks for the input. I've seen the videos on removing chrome from plastic, but like you, not sure if its the same. I've also seen the threads on painting over the chrome, but some say it won't last long. A few years ago, I went to 2 body shops to get my chrome bumpers painted on my Sierra, and neither would paint over the chrome. Both said it wouldn't last. At the time I didn't ask about removing the chrome. I'm wondering if grinding the chrome off would be an option.

That is completely wrong if you want to paint them. Chrome is a horrible surface for paint adhesion. Even if you start with a "self-etching primer", the paint will eventually peel off of it. Plasti-Dip is a different animal.

I have looked but haven't found any home solution for chemically stripping chrome (including the underlying nickel coating) from metal to get it back to bare steel. Looks like the best solution is sand blasting which is the path I will probably take

Yup, there is a reason most body shops don't want to do it, and it's not because "No need to remove it as it provides a good base to be adhered to".

Having mine color matched and bullet lined (LineX like product) this week. My understanding is they scuff the chrome, color match paint, then spray clear bullet liner.

If you want color matched maybe consider vinyl wrap film. I did my buddies chevy bumpers in gloss black. Took about thirty minutes and still looks good after a couple years and some northern michigan winters. Avery Dennison sells wrap film in two yard lengths, 60 inch width for around 100 bucks. 5 yard length is around 200.00. If you get 5 yards you got plenty for mistakes or redo if you scuff it. Try searching online for supplier. Your local sign shops should have a color chart and can order the materials. Maybe even install for you but it's pretty easy. Looks like a couple options for silver metallic. A little difference in color shouldn't be real noticeable.

I hit a deer with my Tundra a couple years ago and went with magnum steel bumpers front and rear. Manufactured in Arizona and the guys there are Tundra owners. The factory bumper crumbled like a beer can from the deer. Thing weighs like 10 or 15 pounds. The magnum front is like 150 pounds so I added the Bilstiens and 1.4 inches up front.

Sorry, got a little off track there. If you want to wrap your bumper just watch tutorials on you tube. I'll answer your questions if you go that route.

Plasti dip is available in colors and gloss finishes. My nephew plasti dipped wheels on his cherokee, did the standard flat black color and then he rattle can sprayed them with gloss black. He traded the vehicle in a couple years later and the wheels still looked good.

6 coats of Plasti dipped on end caps and then painted over it with 3 coats of color matched rattle can and 3 coats of clear.

Not permanent or perfect but basically no cost. Been on for 6 months with no issues.
