Got to take that in, leave it alone and whatever caused that to break off will remain unaddressed, leave it alone and any other broken pieces can lead to total failure, or worse a seized rear end. As already stated that appears to be one of the teeth off the ring, it should not have broken off. Either backlash is not set right and there is improper contact or perhaps the cast is poor and the gear set itself may be at risk for further failure.

Thanks for all of the help guys! I had her towed this morning to the dealership. The serviceman that I am working with sent the picture to Toyota to make sure that he can open it up. He plans on opening her up tomorrow morning. He reassured me that the powertrain warranty will cover the expenses so that is a huge relief. I will keep y'all posted once I know more!

    Update ***

Got the truck back today. The dealer is claiming that they could not find anything wrong with the gears. They swapped out the old chunk with a brand new one.

Did you ask to see the old parts?
Either way your truck is fixed.

Oh yeah, I don't trust dealers. I saw the old one and I also looked at my truck and found the new one was actually attached.

Yeah the serviceman kept referring it to chunk, so i guess it stuck. I think he just meant the whole assembly but im not complaining.

The carrier assembly is the center frame and input shaft housing with ring gear, pinion, and drive flange installed. The gears come pre-adjusted (lash and tooth surface contact), i.e. done under controlled precision conditions at the factory. The technicians can bolt it in, fill it with oil, and done.

Gearset adjustment in the field is mostly a lost art. It was time-consuming, and required expertise and patience found only in experienced craftsmen.

The operative word for "break-in" is "easy". It's the exact same gearset as came in it...follow the owner manual's advice.

Atta boy...great job. I was hoping you would say that. You stuck to your guns:quickdraw: got it done.!!!

Not sure if you ponder this thought... where did those pieces come from if the third member was good.

Enjoy that Tundra find some dirt.:mudding:

I hate having to get the gear mesh correct, but it's not too terrible, just takes alot of patience like you said. Been years since I've done it, but when worked on a fleet of 16 old concrete haulers, I was the only mechanic there, and boy oh boy did I have some nerve racking projects to do.... my least favorite was rebuilding the Eaton transmissions in them. They had 3 gear shafts, each with 3 gears on them, a primary, intermediate, and secondary intermediate shaft. Trying to get those bastards all meshed and synced correctly with only 2 hands was a pain, and there was more than one wrench thrown across the shop during the time.....

I was rear ended many years ago and on impact the ring gear over stressed the pinion gear and sheared a fragment very similar to what you found.
Was your truck ever involved in an accident by chance? Just a thought...

No, the only thing that I've noticed is a slight scratch mark on the rear bumper like the previous owner hit a cement pole while parking but I dont think it would cause something like that.
