    Lots of shenanigans.
I purchased a 2017 Tundra TRD PRO double cab a week ago. She has 38k miles and had one previous owner. I wasn't 100% sure if the rear/front diff and transfer case oil have been swapped out so I did it myself. When removing the drain bolt for the rear diff I noticed that the magnet had 2-3 decent size pieces of metal. The oil seemed like it wasn't terribly old. It had the typical sludge as well. How serious is this? What do I need to do to fix this? If I need to fix it, I plan on upgrading the part so feel free to send in suggestions. I sent the picture (below) to the salesman so that he can show the techs. I haven't had any issues with the truck besides that she slightly pulls to the right. I already planned on doing an alignment soon, but don't think that it has anything to do with the metal. Like I said earlier, I just got this truck. I haven't even taken it to the gas station to fill her up.

Thoes are not small chunks. Looks like part of the ring gear, not sure about the other fragment. If either have a super shiny luster to them or small vertical lines on them.
You didn’t mention where you got said truck ? Any warranty, As is? Have it fixed before it get more expensive.
    Good luck

You’re still under warranty so I would take it in and have them inspect it

What would happen if I did nothing?
I bought it from a Toyota Dealership. It only has the standard Toyota dealership warranty rn.

Do you know how many miles the warranty expires? Isn't it like 50k or so?

    I’m pretty sure that’s considered drivetrain 5yr/60k.

I’d bring it in for sure.

You are just outside toyota standard 3 year 36000 mile warranty. I would definitely still take it back to the dealership you got it from have them look into it

left alone, it can do some real damage to the rest of the ring and pinion gears if any of fragments were to get caught between them under load. Cause damage to the carrier unit and or bearings.
I had to replace the entire rear end on a Ford F-150 because of stuff like you pulled out of your read end.
Mine grenaded , had a 67 Chevelle with a positive unit in it and it froze up and tore out the drive shaft.
not to hijack your thread. Have it fixed ASAP

That's definitely something broken off, and not some metal debris that sometimes gets in there during the diff casting process. Definitely bring it back.

Powertrain warranty is 60 months/60,000 miles from "in-service" date. Your differential should be covered.

Your dealer will be on your side. He just sold you a truck a week ago with what appears to be a damaged gear set. IMO, he'll be anxious to get this resolved quickly.

Yeah, the salesman was pretty good. The only thing that I am worried is his snake sales manager. I'll prob be a dick and threaten to leave a really negative review if they don't honor the warranty.

The sales manager won't be involved; his guy has done his part. The service manager will authorize the repair after technicians determine no abuse was involved.

Personally, I would focus on getting the truck repaired to specification. Lobbying for anything beyond that (non-Toyota gearset?) might raise suspicion that an ulterior motive "helped it along".

Man that's terrible. Other side of the coin, I let me LSD diff change slip on my 2006. Seems like I went over 100,000 miles before changing it. The oil was putrid but I had nothing more than the usual smear of metal paste on the magnet.

Geez, I might be in the same situation as you, but so far no shavings or chunks on the magnet, only a concerning whine. Dealer wants to take it apart on wednesday... hopefully it wont cost me anything but time.

Differential should be covered by standard powertrain warranty within 60 months/60K miles.

From the 2017 Owner Warranty and Maintenance Guide, Powertrain Warranty includes engine, transmission and transaxle, front-wheel-drive system, and rear-wheel-drive system. Rear-wheel-drive system includes "Axle housing and all internal parts, propeller shafts, U-joints, axle shafts, drive shafts, bearings, supports, seals, and gaskets."

Stupid Toyota Mexico's warranty is BS... its 60,000 KM or 3 years... but corrosion is covered for 60 mo...yay. No specifics on power/drivetrain

I'd take it in a heartbeat, but it wouldn't make it past customs without an invoice.

Anyway, poo has yet to hit the fan so I'm holding my breath until the dealer gets a chance to make this right.
