Good practice is to use a nib file to shave off as much of the run thickness as you can. With practice and care, you can get almost all of the run thickness.

Attempting to use only paper to remove the run will significantly thin the paint around the run, because of the extended contact area of the paper. A hard sanding block helps to reduce the collateral thinning, but a nib file will substantially reduce the amount of sanding (and thinning) required to level the run.

Had a feeling you would say that.

All this is making me feel like I should have just gone with a matte paint. Runs be damned.

Edit: safe to say I’ll be painting the doors on a horizontal surface.

Despite the couple runs this coat actually looks much better in direct sunlight than the first coat. I may try one more coat going in 90* from this coat or I may just take care of the runs and call it good. I have to be realistic with my expectations.

Looks pretty good for rattle cans. If it were me, I'd stick that thing with a fork and call it done. Forget the runs...it's a rock-climber! You'll get where you won't take it out for worrying about messing up your paint job.

Hey! Would ya look at that! That looks 10x better than your original attempt. Way to take some feedback and input and put it to good use, nice job man.

Lol body damage has NEVER stopped me. I know what you mean though.

Thanks man. I appreciate it! I got lots of help from you and everyone else and I’m very thankful for that.
I think the real test will be how well the doors come out. That will be the most seen thing by passerby’s and whatnot so I will definitely focus hard on making sure to use the techniques I’ve learned.

Earlier this week the weather report looked like today was the day to paint the doors.
Then the forecast got more and more glum.
    Well, F that.
Yesterday I stripped the doors of the vinyl decals, door ding protector, and badges.
Today I found a couple extra feet in the garage and got the doors in primer.
Then I decided I should do a couple more coats on the roof because I really didn't like the original outcome and I think it was a pretty light coat anyway. Sanded it down with 400 grit, cleaned the hell out of it and then went to town.
The pictures taken are about 45 mins afterwards.

I will lay down some color on the doors later and post pictures of those later.

    Thank you gentlemen!
Pretty happy with how the roof came out.
It’s got me excited about painting the doors.

Thanks, but don’t worry, it got plenty of primer before top coat.

Try to keep it in a worm atmosphere or the paint might blush on you. Blush= shinny/ faded spots. your doing great for a raddled can.

Added a personal touch to the hood. Tomorrow I will mask it off and touch up around it with green then clear coat over it.
Also got the first coat on the doors.

Wet sand works but may be too much for rattle cans, you can also try to even everything out with buffing compound or polishing compound.

I tried wet sanding a small spot on the hood just to see what would happen. It immediately took the gloss off of the spot and didn’t do anything to fix the run I was attempting to work on.

At this point I’m just doing my best to get a nice even and glossy coat and I’m just going to roll with it however it comes out.
If I get bored I may try rubbing compound. Thank you.

So here’s how the doors came out after the first couple coats last night.
Little bit light near the top (which I was sort of expecting). A few lines just under the windows. The spray cans said wait 48 hours before sanding and re-coating so Saturday night or Sunday afternoon they’ll get finished up then bolted on.

Looks good. Honestly, I didn't think it looked light at the top. Just thought it was a glossy glare! :)

Zoom in and you can definitely see where it’s light. No biggie though. Just gotta fix it and move on.

Last night I masked off my stencil and daughters handprints, that entire half of the hood, sanded with 1000G, then gave that half of the hood another coat of green. After that I decided to try.... clear coat!
I have a can of 2K clear sitting around and I wanted to see what it would do on top of this JD Green paint.

Here's what it looks like 12 hours later. The clear is a little light in a couple places but otherwise I think I really like the finish.
When I do the last coat of color on the doors later today I think I'm going to experiment more with the 2K and coat them in clear as well. Then of course I need to coat the other half of the hood.

(yes, you can still see some hail damage on the hood. I thought my body work was better but oh well.)

Snapped a couple pictures of the doors with the light in different places. Came out great in my opinion. Tomorrow I’ll bolt them on and then start transferring parts from the old doors.

That looks pretty good. I know how frustraiting it can be to try to do the can from past experience. At some point I want to buy a beater car for commuting and do the herkuliner all over it. I am sure it will look like shit afterwards, but we are always harder on ourselves about our own work.
