Every time I post on here, I further realize how little I truly know about my truck haha but I enjoy learning and tinkering around. Thank you for the input

If I’m wrong my apologies. The VVTI versions of the 4.7L may be interference motors.

I just hope I’m correct. The Toyota dealer I worked for back in 2005-2006 the techs all insisted the 4.7L and all Toyota engines on timing belts were non interference engines.

I really hope all you need is a new belt and the cams set to the correct timing.

On the subject of timing belts - just got this 2005 from a family member and it only has 35k miles on it! Timing belt has NOT been changed. I'm getting various opinions from mechanics - some are saying it should be changed simply due to age of vehicle - others say age doesn't matter at all and it's just mileage... what do you guys think? change it or is it OK for another 4-5 years?

You have a great truck in your possession, change that belt and keep it great.

I'm leaning towards doing it but dealer wants around $900 for the job so cost is a bit of a factor... if it's OK then would like to hold off for a bit. Someone said there is a way to see the belt pretty easily - is that true?

You should change it. Those mechanics are wrong. Toyota specifically says 7 years or 90,000 miles. Not based on mileage alone. Have them do the water pump while in there.

That’s a really good price, especially if it includes the water pump, thermostat and fluids. Also see if they are doing the cam shaft seals and crank seal at the same time along with the tensioner. OEM or aisin/oem parts. I would jump on it. I know it’s really low mileage, and you very likely could be OK leaving it. My Sequoia belt didn’t get changed for 170,000 miles. The belt looked decent. But I’ve seen evidence on this forum of them with less miles and more time, look really bad. At least open up the timing belt cover and give it a look. I still suggest just doing it and knowing you’re good for another 90,000/7yrs.

$900 bucks, let's suppose it broke, just the tow truck alone will be $200 minimum. Another way to put this, remember that day after when you were so thankful that you wore that raincoat? Yeah!!!

Sorry, just checked my notes and the $900 was just labor and did not include the water pump or seals (just tensioners & idler)... Total was around $1500 which also included new drive belt&tensioner

OK, I think I'll just need to get it done. Will start shopping around for prices...

Glad to hear, OP. Although a pop sound is not as dramatic as throwing a rod through your block when the oil runs out and your low oil light has blown.

Been there, done that on my parent’s beater when I was a teen. :D

On miles, it's ~40% spent. But on age it's ~200% spent.
It's a (correction) 7 year service interval, or thereabouts. It's time to change the belt. And as repeatedly mentioned, there's other things there that are 15+ years old and engine-critical like the water pump, serpentine, coolant, thermostat, idler arms, etc. You're risking a $15,000 truck trying to save a needed $1200 service... penny wise but pound foolish.

I bought the OEM parts thru Toyota online during a big sale, which they often have, and my mechanic agreed to install them. That saved me probably a few hundred dollars. You might try the same thing.

my belt at 192k looked that good and i knew it was original. Owner even said he kept putting it off since 100k. LOL.

that being said, my fathers 02 tacoma with 78k miles the belt was cracked to high hell... where a vehicle is parked, if it sits alot, age. All this plays into belt condition. i think toyota states 90k or 6 years if you want to be 100% by the book

I'm rooting for you! Posts like these are why I just got my '01 into the shop on Wednesday. Hoping that it all goes well. I've only had mine for about a month, but I'm slowly learning to love her, despite her flaws.

He just said bent valves and said that they could rebuild the engine but recommended a newer engine. I tend to agree - it seems like a better investment to get a "new" engine than to rebuild an engine with 220k miles

Well crap I guess the 4.7L is an interference motor. That sucks, shows how much I didn’t know about the VVTI 4.7L.

That sucks OP. Sorry to hear it. Others warned me, and I try to do my best to tell everyone to change those belts and other parts in every thread when it comes up. Hard lesson to learn.

Hey, there's a guy with a totally rusted out frame Tundra on this forum. You might investigate buying his engine. I recall it was relatively low miles. Good luck.
