You will need an engine from an 05-06 tundra, 05-07 sequoia or if you transfer everything an 07-09 tundra 4.7 will work.

Older ones do not have VVTI and will not work

The key difference to notice is the plastic intake manifold vs aluminum. Plastic is the VVTI manifold

Okay, so that should be good news, right? The plastic intake manifold is cheaper?

For total engine? Price will vary based on mileage.

Won't know until later this afternoon. They're taking a look at the engine today. I'm in PST time so it's still early. Needless to say, I'm on pins and needles here lol

Never have fully understood why they don't design belt drive engines with two belts. I mean come on, add a half inch to the engine length for the secondary and a belt broken sensor to kill ignition for the primary. Yes, I know maintenance schedule blah blah blah. Just sayin, redundant systems are not always a bad thing.

If the engine is shot, I'd go the junkyard route. I see a lot around here for $1,000 with less than 125,000 miles. So $1,000 for the engine, $1,500 for the the swap and $500 for other random stuff.

I'd also take a hard look at replacing the alternator and starter while you're in that deep.

Take a look at the Hewitt secondary air injection bypass kit, or consider getting all of those parts replaced at the same time (It's like $1,500 just in parts though)

Sequoia engine might be your best bet they are pretty cheap and more common in LA then a 05-06 tundra. Hopefully no damage was done.

my buddy drove from LA -Vegas this weekend in a 07 sequoia. Truck over heated after Barstow the whole way, He just kept driving. Coolant blew up out of the res and had the lines all sucked in.

Walked him thru how to check for issues, they put coolant back in 2 gallons (it was empty empty). Drove it back no issues. I looked at it yesterday and couldn’t find any issues. Taking it to a shop this week for a full look. Anyways these engines have a lot of give.

Since you didn't report hearing any carnage I'm still hoping you get lucky like the other guys. I would think if anything, VVTI might be a bit more since there were less made with VVTI therefore there might be fewer engines to pick from. :fingerscrossed: for you though.

Might suggest to change the thermostat, also I wouldn't ever be loaning any ride to that buddy if I were you!

Add an oil change to that list, at minimum.

Funny thing, he did a oil change and had someone give it a look before heading out earlier in the week.

It was 115 in Vegas this weekend. I told him to be cautious after Baker on the 15 because I have over heated there many many years ago in a 07 Camry ( ac full blast, fully loaded down with luggage and ppl, going 90+) he confirmed he was doing the same :).

everytime I drive that that section I cut the ac now or anytime I see signs that say “cut ac to prevent overheating”

Not as common now, but you could also find spigots on the side of the road and at truck stops that would say something like "Non-potable water - radiator use only".

OP, if you do have to get a new motor, I would recommend doing headers at the same time if that's something you would want. It would be the perfect time.

I see anything like that and its time to act like I'm towing. O/D off, slow down from 80-90 and take it easy for a bit. (O/D off raises engine rpm, which will both increase fan speed and lighten load on engine.)

I could have sworn I read this motor was non-interfering I guess all signs point toward that being inaccurate. Fingers crossed it’s not too bad.

Chains are common place again these days. Belts were used to reduce noise and easier to replace. Older chains weren’t nearly as reliable as modern ones.

the UZ originally came out in 89.. so shes dated

Chains are great. This engine just missed the start of Toyota’s chain switch over. My 06 corolla had over 800k miles on its original chain. That being said, Chevy v6s are famous for chains failing at or around 100k.

So, if I understand right, OP has a truck with 218,000 miles and no records of a belt replacement. And keeps piling on miles driving on the highway... putting on 9k miles. Good gravy....

This is a 90k or ~10 year maintenance item. It should be almost due for it's 3rd belt, by the way. A truck with that mileage should have IMMEDIATELY been put in for belt service if it wasn't known... live and learn.

OP, I hope you didn't destroy the motor. Keep us posted.

Eh, chains of their own problems. They can snap, or more commonly their tensioners fail. That's often far more expensive than a belt replacement on a schedule. And some designs (Audi) put the chain in the back of the engine requiring the entire engine removal for maintenance.

I sort of prefer belts. Just service them on their schedule.
