I have a non-JBL system, I'm not aware I received a DSR1 nor did Tech12 suggest it. Is this a good, better, best thing... like the upgrade alone sounds good, but even better with a DSR1??

If you run your power wire through the passenger side just tuck it up under the valence thing. There are 5 plastic nuts that unscrew and drop the cover. Run the wire and put the cover/nuts back on. It won’t go anywhere

I’m in the middle of my install, how does the JL bass knob come apart? Does the black knob just pull off? Or unscrew?

Pulls straight off if it's the RBC-1. I don't know if you determined where you're going to put yours yet, but here's where I put mine -- right in the middle of the plastic piece under the center console lid. My hand naturally rests there so I don't even have to move it to adjust the bass.

the LOC simply converts/decodes the signal from the factory head unit to be usable on your aftermarket amp. For The DSR1, once you update the software and flash for your specific vehicle then there is an app you download on your phone where you can adjust time correction, crossover points, and also has a 31 band EQ so that will give you much more sound adjustment than the bass, treble, and mid that you have on the factory HU.

That’s very clean, nice job. I ended up using the blank next to the USB port.

Nice. I was lucky enough to win one of James' raffles he runs on Tundra Crew. JL amp, 2 JL 10s, and sub box for my SR5 non JBL. I added a double USB in that blank. See mine close to arm rest. I seem to adjust it a lot. Still with OEM head unit it hits hard. Lots of WTF from the wife.

Is that the double cab set up? That rear seat area looks different than my 2018 CM. My box is behind the seat.

So on that JL amp... the set screws that hold the speaker wire... that little tiny speaker wire on those harnesses was tricky to get those set screws to bite down on it, had several that I had to try 2 or 3x before I could pull on it and it not come out. When I first energized/ tested the system, my left rear door was quiet and sure enough when I looked, that wire had popped out of the amp. I’m now thinking I should’ve crimped little blades on the ends of the speaker wire harness and put those into the amp. What has everyone else seen or done on this?

Trim off an inch of insulation. Then fold the wire back and twist thus giving you double the wire . Can put a dab of solder if you want.

I’m in the “plan of attack phase” here. My full speaker package arrived over the weekend from James and trying to put this together in my head first.

When running the power wire from the amp to the firewall, where are you putting the wire? Are you running it through the passenger door jam?

How about the speaker wire to the sub. Is that though the back passenger door jam as well? Or are you just feeding it under the carpet.

So to key in on something....

To clarify, are you saying that anytime an aftermarket HU is installed, the stock microphones can't be used? If at all possible I'd like to keep the stock HU (even if this means installing a DSP/LOC), simply because with a new truck, side steps and a new sound system, National Command Authority (heh) is already fussing about the cost, even though it's out of a slush fund. LOL

That is my understanding. To be honest though, it didn’t take more than a hour to pull the dash speaker and A-pillar cover run the wire and install the new mic in the stock location of the overhead console.

This video shows the route I chose for the power wire to the amp.
    https://youtu.be/4IPB-SsbEsE
For the sub wire, I ran it back in the door sill.

There is a grommet with I “nipple” on the bottom side of it that allows you to push a wire through....you just have push something though it to poke it out and then cut the end off. Here are a couple of picks for where I ran my power wire, the second one is on the inside just above the driver kick panel.

Oh, well that's a tad different. I was thinking one of those cheesy aftermarket mics just hanging out there somewhere. Still, to keep it stock, I'd rather upgrade almost everything else first.

You will not keep your stock microphone with the aftermarket HU but no extra cost, it should come with it. You can just run the wire out the side panel on the dash to the left of the steering wheel and the run it up the a pillar and the across the headliner over to above the RVM. This is where I have mine and no issues with people hearing me on the other end.

Put mine very close to the same area.
It sits at my fingertips and is easily adjusted and adjusted almost every song listening to crappy XM signal..

@DCB500 is correct, you can't use the stock mic with an aftermarket HU.
Mine is tucked up with the mount clip, clipped to the headliner.
    Don't even notice it..

    Stock, for now
Im not a professional at this. Im just saying because of what I have been learning.
You are right. They do not NEED one. According to what I have been seeing on this installations you can go 2 ways. First leave the stock amp. With this setup you will be at the mercy of the amp for yr output sound, which is crappy and has a lot of drawbacks. Second option is to delete the amp and loose the dataBUS voice commands. Again its not a NEED. DSR1 will clean and organize the frequencies coming from the HU into the amps. Please correct me if Im wrong.

If you are using the factory HU you will need a loc or DSP to get a usable signal. If you are using an aftermarket HU but not adding in your own amp then all you have to do is get the harness adapters for the behind the radio connections. You will have more sound adjustment with the aftermarket HU but you will still only have the factory amp power. If you remove the factory amp with aftermarket HU and use aftermarket amps then you will not need a LOC/DSR1/DSP.

Kinda correct. Never leave the stock amp lol. The dsr1 will improve the sound quality but I don’t run one in my truck and I keep my gain structure at 11 o’clock so the noise floor is not that bad. I don’t lose any functions not using a dsr1. With that said I installed a complete system yesterday in a 2018 jbl truck with a dsr1 and I have to admit it sounds better after tuning and setup. If you have a non jbl system and it’s worth the $300 to reduce the noise floor then by all means have at it.

Ok, I could be wrong, but I swear before my install the compass on my driver display "twisted" as I drove to show direction/heading. It is now a stationary compass (north always up) with a red needle that spins around indicating the heading? Did I lose a setting when I disconnected the negative terminal all weekend doing my install? I've been through all the options, setup, etc. and can't find anything on the compass settings.
