No, you should do the bypass until they extend the warranty to us 15's. Then take it off once they do.

That is about the dumbest thing I ever heard...."monitor". If it leaks it leaks and they need to fix it, especially on a near new truck. I wonder if that is Toyota's policy or the dealer's policy to "monitor"?

With that said, I turned 5K this morning and after reading this thread went out and checked my truck. Not sure If I was looking at the right spot but I looked through the wheel wells at the front corner of each head (not where it mounts to the block but above that) and everything is bone dry and has gray silicone sealer. I bought a Tundra because I was tired of having my F-150s fixed under warranty on a regular basis, so far the Tundra has proven that I made the right decision and tomorrow it is going in for it's first oil change/service and for the EDR software update. I also found another recall for the center airbag which was published just two days ago, I hope they take care of that at the same time.

Look inside your wheel wells right above the exhaust manifolds. The first picture is of mine (not leaking), and the second picture is of someone's leaking (not mine).

It’s just confusing. I've read something to the effect that if the dealer does an update of the ECU that makes the pump run for less time that it deems the bypass useless at that point.

So please correct me but all the bypass does is fool the ECU that the pump is still working even if it fails? Which is why I thought about doing the relocate as to help prevent it failing in the first place. But then if you wait and the pump does fail you can’t use the bypass anyways because the pump gets stuck in the open position? My brain hurts LOL

So maybe I should just put the bypass on if I get called in for a recall remove the bypass kit? Would I then reinstall the bypass kit after they did a recall?

Then of course you have the dealer that likes to do things as a “favor” while you’re in there for something else. Like “hey bud we just updated your ECU for you while you were in for a service” LOL

LOL, yeah, I meant do the Relocate, not the bypass. I believe they've extended the warranty to the 2012's now. I'm gonna relocate mine soon. Hopefully it lasts until they extend the warranty to the 15's.

Yeah, it seems like more people are having the issue with 3rd gens. It seems like if this affected the 2nd gens equally we'd be seeing a whole lot more since they've obviously been on the road a lot longer.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the orange arrows indicating the valve cover gasket/leak and red arrow the cam tower seal? Which in your picture seems to have some residue or maybe just dirty.:notsure:20180222_190559.jpg

Orange arrow is the valve cover, your red arrow needs to move up some to the gray bead of sealant directly under the little bump out with the hole in it.

Here's a little bit better view. I kind of thought what you were thinking at first, but that's just dirt/discoloration from the heat. You can see the gray sealant beads inside the orange circle.

You would think that Toyota uses some upgraded sealant, ideal would be a groove with a continuous o-ring style gasket. I just check mine every once in the while now and if it leaks they just have to fix it. I am going on a 700+ mile round trip Saturday, that will put the engine to the test.

I wish I had your attitude! If it were any issue that didn't involve breaking into the engine I don't think I'd really worry about it, but it just makes me cringe thinking of driving around with a molested top end.

I had the same thought, a grove with a gasket in it would of been ideal.

    Exactly!

How many of these leaks have actually been an issue? I have had other cars and trucks in my life were, yeah, there is a little drip of oil here or there. It wasn't a bomb ready to go off. I drove it. Everything was fine. What is this hurting when there is a leak found? Is indicative of oil getting where it isn't supposed to?

Biggest issue I have read about is it starts dripping onto the manifolds and burning because of the location of the leak. As for frequency of how much it leaks that's more shooting in the dark. Some just seep and I have read of others that leaked a bunch, mine has lost 1/2qt in 6k miles for example. If it was an older truck with say 100k plus miles it would be a little more acceptable, but trucks that are not even a year old leaking is ridiculous.
