Its not as common as you think. It was more common a few years back, 2015ish. Now, its much more rare. And if it does happen, it doesn't ground your truck or won't leave you stranded. Not worth being paranoid about.

Pretty sure if mine was leaking it’s frozen by now.

WTF is a cam tower leak, anyway?

2017 21k, leak on passenger side. What's crazy is I left Chevy because I couldn't find a double cab with 3.42 gears without the Chevy shake, while signing papers on the Tundra I mentioned to my wife that the only thing I was concerned could go wrong with the Tundra was the cam towers leaking. Here I am exactly year later and my trucks leaking at the cam tower, go figure.

Toyota does a lot of things well with there vehicles but when they have an issue they sure let it plague the platform for a long time. Mine goes in March 5th to have the engine pulled and cam tower re sealed. I'm still on the fence if I'm going to keep this thing or not.

Yea, this stuff is bumming me out a little. I was planning to keep this thing for a LONG time but if Toyota can’t get a grip on this after all this time I think it’s speaking volumes. I don’t give a shit if the reason is they can handle it cheaper on a case to case basis. That’s total bullshit. Who wants their trucks engine torn apart?? Not me!
And if that is not the reason and they just can’t come up with a factory fix after all this time then they are completely incompetent.

Yeah, this isn't a small issue. My gas cap failed, that's an acceptable type of issue. Major engine overhaul is a completely different story, if I wanted a truck that the motor had been pulled out of I would have bought something old and used. For as much as they have to tear this thing down I'm looking down the road at possible future issues. First vehicle I have ever had that has to receive this magnitude of a repair, unacceptable IMO.

It’s unacceptable because it’s been going on for so long. If it was an early issue, it was recognized and remedied I could understand a little more.

Have a 2015 Limited Crew Max with 57,000 miles that I bought a few months ago. I have been looking very closely for a possible leak, actually looked this morning. Nothing yet, have all the service records and don't see that the repair was completed. Have a dark gray sealant.

From the votes so far it appears greater that 20% of owners have the leak? That seams awfully high.

    I couldn't agree more.

Which side started leaking on yours? Did they repair one or both sides?

I think this effects a lot of trucks, my dealer told me they see it all the time. While I was waiting on my truck Tuesday for initial inspection I walked the lot and looked at the used Tundra's. One 4.6 and had no leak, 4 others were 5.7 and 3 had visible seeping and 1 was dripping off onto the manifold like mine is.

Interested to know if it affects the Flex Fuel or the Gas more readily. Mine is a Gas engine with no problem as of yet.

I’m at 20 K and so far so good. I’ve looked through the wheel wells and the best I can from the top of the engine compartment. I can’t see or smell anything yet. I do have a ten-year hundred thousand mile platinum warranty. I know I won’t make it to 100,000 before the 10 years is up. Hopefully if anything is going to happen it will happen within this timeframe. I try not to worry about it.

I’m actually more concerned with the AIP taking a dump some day. Don’t know if I should do a bypass or a relocate. Or anything. Maybe I should leave it alone while I’m under warranty, then do it immediately after the warranty is up.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses so far. It appears the issue shows itself fairly early much of the time.

I edited the poll a little to try to get some more detail, so if you've already answered, go ahead and answer again with the updated info.

Here's how the original poll ended:

Probably a stupid question but my truck came with lifetime powertrain warranty. If this ever happens that would cover this right?

This is in the powertrain, so yes, it should. However, I'd check the fine print. Some of those warranties (I assume it's through your dealer) won't cover oil leaks.

I know how much you like polls so I couldn't help but put up another! I did screenshot the original one for reference. I just thought it'd be good to see what years and engine types are having or not having the issue.
