Lol. When I was talking to the rep I was like... I realize how stupid this sounds but it literally "just fell off" while I was driving on the interstate.

I guess I should have tried to come up with some crazy story or something... might have had better luck not getting it insta declined.

Update - Talked to a different dealer (not close enough for me to drive to) that has ran into this issue and gave me some direction.

Hopefully this info being passed onto the supervisor at my dealer will make some progress (supervisor has yet to reach out to me since this whole thing started and got passed onto his plate).

Thank you for everyone giving me suggestions on how to get this resolved. Hopefully this thread helps others who find themself in similar situation like me.

Sorry you guys are going through all this but hopefully this will help many others of us when it happens again. Or better yet encourages Toyota to generate a TSB to fix them in advance. Good luck.

Oof. Got hit with the "my manager is on vacation for another week" (they have had my truck for a week now) followed by the "There are no TSB from Toyota"

**** this dealer. Going to a different one at this point this is just stupid.

The clip system looks like a hidden design! I had a look at mine and the cover seams to be thin plastic. I noticed that mine moves a little and the gap is quite small. I think I can apply a 1/2" bead of black caulking around the perimeter gap to basically glue the cover to the mirror body.

With the hidden clips, I can see them getting damaged (especially during manufacturing) and no one can see them broken. If they aren't careful to line the clips up, and push too hard the clip will get overbent and eventually just fail. Then the cover falls out. I am sure that a picture of the cover in the parts book will show the clips and if any covers have been saved, the broken or missing clips will be noticeable.

It might be that the camera and plugs are adding to the issue by causing the assembler to push the cover on with a bit too much force.

I guess the other question is, has a cover fallen off a Gen 3 Tundra that does not have the cameras?

Wasn't DJ but yes lol that dealer. Still SOL at my current dealer... they pretty much gave me the finger but my other dealer by me told me to bring it in and see what they can do.

I told my dealer everything that the Tampa dealer told me and yeah... my dealer must not have many brain cells. Not really sure what is going on there.. just seems to be some disconnect.

Does the connector for the camera have those clips that secure the plug to the socket like most auto connectors? It seems that the grey connector doesn't have those clips. If they were there, the cover and camera would be hanging there bouncing off the door. In some photos the camera and cover are missing (or were they taken off)? Any good shots of the cover clips?

When i falls off at 80mph even if it did have a secure clip it would rip it off at the point of least resistance. I'm my case it left the connector perfectly in tact but still that soy bean plastic connector aint going to just hold on to that panel lol.

This sounds like a double whammy! clips breaking all over the place! I am really temped to pull my covers off to see what is going on in there.

I am tempted to, but I'd like to see just how that piece needs to be pried and articulated lest we might break some of these damn clips in the process.

IDK judging by my dealers using the "outside force" claim to deny the warranty I'm afraid to touch a single thing on my truck anymore. They even asked "have you washed it lately" clearly trying to use the car was as an excuse to not cover it.

It's covered in mud hasn't been washed in months. :monocle:

Absolutely no bashing here, I feel for you guys. Ive owned Tundras since 2005 and have had very few problems.

Was this re-design rushed out? Crappy engineering? Supplier issues because of the coronavirus?

I understand the first year of anything could have problems but usually with Toyota your pretty safe even with a first year model they produce.

But these 3rd gen. problems seem extreme. It's like these problems GM and Ford owners have, I read about them and laugh because Toyota never has the problems.

Anyways, I'll always be a Toyota guy, just can't believe you guys are having these issues. So un-Toyota like.

That is so bogus. By its nature a truck lives and moves outside and is subject to all sorts of normal "outside forces" that it should be designed to handle, wind being one of them.

    This was my thought too.

What ticked me off the most was when I was on the phone with Toyota North America the rep asked me tons of questions like, "Is it possible you hit an ATM window. Have you been through the car was recently?" ect.

Like... I know you're just trying to get me to say something you can use to deny this claim. At least try to be more sly about it.

LOL... that is like a techie calling tech support for a real problem that you have worked from every angle for some time and you get the level A help line... have you rebooted your computer? Etc. No, gee, I didn't think of that. LOL.

Update: Got a text from dealer that I have been given an approved "One time good will replacement".

Don't get me wrong I am appreciative but what happens next time when I go on an hour or two drive and it falls off again? :(

Gonna need to get one of those dash cam things and just stick it on my windows to look at the mirrors so I can prove they literally just fall off. lol.

did the entire mirror come off or only the bottom panel?

if its just the bottom panel, I would think abut laying a very small bead of marine sealant around it, almost like a tack weld

If you're talking about 5200 or something similar, why not just pop the piece out, put a few dabs where the tangs are and pop it back in? You just need enough to keep it from unlatching again. And it's better if you can't see it. That 5200 is super strong, I wouldn't use much

ya, I have no idea, don't have my truck yet, just throwing something like that out for consideration. If its just that panel underneath, you can likely seal it yourself like you mentioned

Adding caulking would be a simple preventative fix. We really don't know when or if the cover will fall off.

So long as some gaps are left in the caulking for any drainage. Taking the cover off would show the condition of the tabs.

There may have been an issue with manufacturing where the lower camera covers and the housings did not fit correctly. This can cause them to fall out. They might already be aware of the issue and the mirror assembly may need to be replaced as whole :(

Just caught up to this. They're still trying to deny covering it due to external forces???
