SO glad I found this thread. This happened to me the other week.. just driving down the road and it fell off.

Took it to the dealership and they want me to pay $1,400 to have it fixed because "There is no way it just fell off without you hitting something."

How many times have I been in the shop to get recalls fixed, 4 now, with a soon to be 5th for the brakes that won't stop squealing.

Yes, there is a way it "just fell off".

Hope I have the same result as you. Right now I'm being told I have to pay an insane amount of it and to say I'm pissed is an understatement.

Update - Not only did the dealership claim it's "impossible it just fell off" (even though they acknowledge there is zero indications of an impact) but Corp Toyota said "This is the first we have heard of this happening."

I guess I am SOL. I don't know what to do but I really don't want to spend $1,400 for a brand new truck that I haven't had even a year.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should handle this? I feel really defeated ATM, not gonna lie.

Tell them that you want them to contact the field representative. Toyota knows it's a known issue. Individual Dealerships aren't aware of the issue though.

Ask them why there is a new replacement part for that camera if there wasn't an issue? I'd ask to speak with corporate or the area field rep personally. I'm in North Texas. So you might mention that you know this issue has been confirmed and reported in that region and that field rep is aware. Hopefully that helps.

Toyota North America was the one that told me "This is the first I have heard of it." Valid point... if there is a replacement part for it already how is it not an issue.

Toy. NA also said "just because they can't prove it didn't have an impact doesn't mean there wasn't an outside force that caused it... and that isn't covered."

I asked if they are saying things like wind or gravity are an outside force and thus not covering it and they said "correct".

Idk. It's been this kind of year for me already so not surprised. Is asking for the field rep something I should ask the local dealer or Toy. NA? I'll bring up that Texas reps are well aware of it.

For those of you who are having brake issues with the squealing they did say they have a fix incoming so... at least there is some good news on that separate issue.

No, they said it isn't covered because "it's impossible for it to just fall off without some kind of impact". They even said there are zero signs of impact or scratches...

The local dealer should have an area field rep from Toyota. They are the final say on warranty claims. It's crazy to me they are denying it being a know issue. Good luck getting it worked out.

I'm confused? As I understand it the bottom panel that has the camera mounted to it fell off. Did the panel remain connected to the camera wires or did it completely disconnect and was lost. Why are they telling you to replace the whole mirror when only the bottom panel is missing? This happened to me but the panel remained connected to the wires and was flapping in the wind. I was able to salvage the camera to reuse with a new panel which cost $70.00 at Olathe Toyota in Kansas. There was initially a question of whether the dealer would cover it so I was part shopping just in case I had to foot the bill. However the dealer came through for me with Toyota's approval. The dealer had to send photos to Toyota for approval.

In addition to what has already been stated, I would send them the link to this thread. Numerous other people have reported this issue happening now.

This is 100% garbage. Do not take no for an answer. That shop foreman doesn't know what they are talking about. Hundreds of these have fallen off now. I had both sides fall off and the field rep warrantied both of them. Tell them to get a TFR out there ASAP and if they don't just threaten to call corporate on the dealership for failure to address known issues.

How do you remove these caps? I wonder if there is a possible pre-emptive way to repair this like a longer screw as one poster mentioned? Or a little strategically placed RTV? I know Toyota needs to make this right and honor their warranties, but I would do almost anything reasonable to avoid the issue in the first place and not have to deal with a dealer.

How do you take off the Tundra lower mirror cap?

I'm sure you can just pry them off seeing as most people's just fall off.

The bottom panel is all that fell off - the wire is still there flapping around. It's EXACTLY like all of the pictures posted here. I was told at first it would cost $400 and then the following day given an invoice for $1,400 because of the calibration required.

I sent the link to this thread and nothing. I think the main problem is they looked at it and instantly said there is no chance it could "just fall off" on its own without an "outside force" thus it got documented as "outside force" and that is not covered.

They actually told me to call corporate, which I did, and corporate said "we have to go buy what our techs say so if they are saying it is an outside force then we have to go by that as they know best. This is the first I have heard of mirrors just falling off, I'm going to be honest with you."

I'm getting ping ponged back and forth between the tech, their dealership supervisor, and corporate Toyota.

So, back to my question. When these things come off is a pin or bracket breaking? Or are they just popping off intact due to loose fitting pins or whatever, and then maybe breaking after the fact as they flap in the wind? I want to pop one off and have a look, but I don't want to risk breaking anything by not understanding exactly how they are attached.

The panel has plastic tabs that fit into a slot on the mirror. In my case the front tab was broken off allowing the wind to get in and blow it off.

So, maybe some of these cases were build issues where these tabs cracked on the assembly line and finally gave way in the wind. Unless the wind got under there and the aerodynamic force caused an intact tab to break. Which might indicate a materials issue. Hard to know, I suppose. IDK, I guess am just going to keep an eye on mine and if they develop any looseness or gaps maybe I'll pop one off.

The Toyota North America rep I spoke to said things like "wind" and "gravity" classify as an external force thus not covered under the warranty.... I'm SOL I guess. All I can do is laugh at this point.

So technically they can use scotch tape to hold panels on then when the panels fall off they can say "Oops, must've been gravity and/or wind. So sorry."

Yeah... it's a catch all for them. It's just disappointing to have so many recalls.. know this is an issue.. and then being told to pay to get it fixed.

They must be playing dumb with people now because these mirrors cost $1800 each and now they are losing money after so many have just fallen off. What a joke of Toyota USA not not stand behind their product and honor fixing its short falls. I have 3 remaining warranty repairs out of 20 that are still being done on mine. I got real nasty with them over the fit a finish of this truck and called them out.

If your dealer wont fix it then i suggest taking it to another one until someone says they know about it and they will get it taken care of at no cost.

Take a drive to Florida and go to the Toyota of Tampa Bay dealer they know all about this issue and several others fixed on my truck. Ask for DJ the shop foreman he knows all about it.

Yeah, they have a running list of a few things that have/need to get done on my truck. I've always been super chill with them and was like eh it's a new truck that had an entire rework on it so stuff happens. Which is why I'm very surprised they are playing dumb or straight up refusing to even consider the possibility it "just fell off".

Thats a hell of a drive for me but.... good to know. Might just have to call that dealership and explain what is going on and see if they can give my dealership a call and explain that it is a known issue.
