No it’s the same part that came from factory. Perhaps the screw is secure now, I don’t know

This happened to me last week as well. I don't have the PVM so no camera fell out and all wires actually stayed in place. It fell off on I22 between Memphis and Birmingham. Made a loud noise when it came off as it banged into my passenger window but luckily didn't leave any cosmetic damage. Requested the part from my dealer. Happened around 9k miles.

I’m wondering if this will be an ongoing issue if they are just using the same part

need some lock tight on the plastic tab or something lol

I'd prefer a drywall screw. More secure

Yes, for me JB weld or duct tape are honorable options

it’s almost like you are specifically looking for and posting in 3rd Gen threads only, and mostly saying negative things. Why don’t you just keep your opinion to yourself, until you get one for yourself.

There should not be any reason for Toyota to deny this claim.

2022 Limited TRD OR DC, 6200 miles. Right side view mirror bottom panel came off at 75mph. Didn't lose it since the camera cable was attached. Dealer says they will cover it. Still waiting!

Has Toyota issued a fix for this? Curious if we are all going to inevitably experience this until a permanent fix….other than JB Weld

The responses in these threads always crack me up. The trolls really like to show face and throw a little jab.

Thousands upon thousands of 2022 trucks on the road with absolutely zero issues, including mine that I romp on and beat up on a bit, especially the last 3000 miles and some mudding and camping over the weekends. And yet we know directly of a handful of occurrences of this mirror issue, and can assume a handful further that we don’t know about of course, but some people just love to flock and point out some small thing or another that is wrong. lol. As if a plastic mirror issue, combined with the elusive possibility of an already remedied turbo issue is truly the basis of what is keeping them from purchasing a new vehicle.

If you took that same attitude and approach to aviation, and then learned how many airworthiness directives there are on aircraft that cross the sky daily, and have been in the air for decades, then by this logic you’d never get on a plane. Despite costing multi-millions of $’s, taking years to develop, engineer, and manufacture; Surprise! Things still aren’t perfect.

So, why be so critical about a measly mass-produced pickup truck other than to self-justify a reason you’re “sticking with the 2nd Gen” and of course take time to chime in and make sure everyone knows you that you are?

Some of you guys are probably the same ones in the movie theatre that feel compelled to make a statement out loud after every preview as to whether or not you will or won’t be watching something when it comes out.

    I love the interwebs:boink:

Has the issue been fixed in later production models? What can we do to prevent this from happening before any damage may occurs?

The dealer replaced the bottom panel of my rt side view mirror at no cost under warranty. However, they did take photos to send to Toyota for approval. Not a big cost, the panel without the camera is $75.00.

I'm probably going to wait until the 2024 MY. Hopefully they sort out all the issues.

I own a 2022 Platinum, which I purchased in January. This weekend went thru car wash and high pressure drying knocked my piece off on passenger side view mirror. Was able to snap back in but has come lose several times since. Will have to take to repair shop to get fixed, there is no screw on this piece. Very cheap design. Along with squeaky breaks, this has been the only issue with my new truck. Dealership says they are going to do a recall on the brakes, has anyone else heard this?

This happened to a lot of 3rd gen tacoma people as well.

I replaced my caps with puddle light caps and gave away my spares to people who lost them for free.

Everyone having this issue should call Toyota 1 800 number and report this issue. I did this morning and they replied quite quickly, and I have an appointment for repair. I'm just wondering if they replace the part this will just happen again, seems like a poor design.

This happened to me Wednesday on i-45 headed to Houston. Bottom portion literally flew off the vehicle while driving. Brought it in to Toyota today and they are denying the warranty claim since I don't have the part to show them to prove the mirror wasn't hit. Absolutely no damage to the exterior of the mirror, but they say their are scratches on the inside. Needless to same I'm pissed. They are going to send photos to their regional guy, but I have to wait for an answer on that.

Update: The field technician overruled the dealership and advised them that it is a known issue. They have a replacement part for it. Might be worth taking your truck in to get the updated part to avoid this headache.

I was trying to see the mechanism that holds this lower cover in place. Hard to tell what keeps it there. If it just a friction fit, then that would explain why the wind can knock them off.

Assuming that Toyota wont do anything to address this with the current herd of Gen 3's, perhaps a "Red Green" approach could be applied??

Some have mentioned a screw or a glue stick or JB Weld. Perhaps a fix could be worked out and applied to covers before they fall off. For me, and since I have material, I would just run a bead of black silicone (Dow 795 would be my choice) along the 2 straight edges to fill the space. If the cover can be removed, I could just fill the edges and press the cover into the product would be hardly noticeable after clean up!

I have applied many of these backyard fixes to my Airstream. For example: "the fix on the inside door handle falling off and trapping you inside". A bolt and washer worked in that case. I think it became part of a "sticky" on the forum. if there is a way to test the covers to see if they are loose, that would be handy.

I wonder if this loose cover is contributing to the wind noise complaints?

Sucks to be a Beta Tester!
