I have a 2017 VW Passat that I've been driving more. I can two tanks our of the VW for what it would cost for one tank in the Tundra. Plus the VW goes 500-600 miles on a tank. I'll save the miles on the Tundra for now.

Blaming overseas for local failures to produce... denial? We need to own that these prices are caused by a lack of self sufficient practices.

Well I don't know much about all that...I'm just quoting last nights news lol. Whatever the reason is it's pretty lame to pay so much for gas.

    @GODZILLA
I ordered the XLT hybrid in Velocity Blue. A lot of people complain about the stock radio, but it's 1000X's better than the radio in my Tundra :rofl:55mpg's for 1 direction of my daily commute ain't bad either...

That's awesome! I would need the AWD, and the max tow package, so I'd not be getting those sweet hybrid numbers, but I still like that truck.

You should definitely create a thread to showcase it, share your journey with it, and of course; LOTS OF PICS!

I spent over $1,000 on the TRD exhaust, and that was just because I like the way it sounds. I'm not getting rid of my truck. I'm fortunate that an extra $100 - $200 a month on gas won't bankrupt me. And if it goes up to $10 a gallon, we'll likely be looking at society grinding to halt and there will be bigger problems to worry about.

For me gas would have to hit ~$12/gal to add a cheap commuter car to my driveway (will never replace the tundra), commuting ~1000 miles/month. Gas prices for me are $4.30, but you can find it for $4.00 at Costco if your willing to wait in line.

Essentially the savings in gas would need to exceed the cost of insurance, gas, average monthly maintenance, as well as the intrinsic cost of safety, comfort, and my damaged ego for driving a little car

So let me get this straight...The price for 85 oct here was hovering around $3.24 (Costco) for a long time. Then prices went to $3.50 (wherever you get your gas from) and you bought a beater car? You made that purchase for $0.26 (avg) per gal ($6 and some change per fill-up of 26 gal?? :monocle:

Now the price for 85 oct (Costco) is $4.18. Now, what are you going to buy? Sorry, I just don't understand the logic here when a lot of people are purchasing another vehicle and parking the Tundra...

$3.69/gal? Nice! It's $4.18 here for 85 oct at Costco. Can you imagine filling up the 38 gal tank? That's would be $228 in California...

I'm not the guy you're referring to, but I'm confused how you're confused... Let's make some assumptions: his Tundra gets 10mpg, and his civic gets 30mpg. That means he's spending 1/3 as much gas per week. If he was spending $200/week on gas for the Tundra, he's now spending $67/week for the civic. He said he'll break even at 18 months, so $133 x 78 weeks = ~$10k, that all adds up so far. After 18 months the civic has paid for itself, and every week after that he is now saving (or making) $133/week. He said that's not including your normal items like maintenance and presumably insurance and registration, etc. but all of that doesn't add up very much if he's saving $133/week, that would get paid off within 2 months probably. Now take that out to say 3 years, and dude has saved (made) $10k roughly and will continue to make $10k/18 months assuming gas stays the same.

Now say gas increases and dude would've been paying $300/week for the Tundra, he's now spending $100/week on the civic and saving $200/week and he would break even on the Civic faster and make more money in his pocket per week! All of that makes perfect sense to me, unless I'm missing something. All the numbers I posted I pulled out of my ass, but seem completely plausible if not on the low end of the spectrum.

Wife and I took a 300 mile road trip over the weekend. I said "I'll be loading up the Maverick" and she said "No Way, let's show up in style." Even $4.29/gal isn't enough to make her like it.....

I looked into a beater myself. Insurance 60-70 a month starts to really eat into the time it would take to break even with hoping and praying that beater holds up.

my commute is only 6 mile one way tho so everyone is different.

I calculated a 2500$ beater at about 2 years give or take. Let’s hope it this nonsense doesn’t last this long.

Y'know, that's a good point. We're planning on picking up a beater of some sort (probably a Honda Accord or Camry) mainly for gas mileage and because my son's about to start practicing driving (Lord help me), but as things stand, while I don't "like" higher gas prices, I can absorb it just fine, and it'll likely cost an extra $50/month for insurance, plus other upkeep...meaning any savings due to gas prices are quickly eliminated or reduced.

If you get 10 mpg in your Tundra, you're more likely to get 20 mpg or less in a Civic. I can get 33 mpg in my wife's Corolla on the highway in the summer but I get 18 or better in my truck under the same conditions.

Wow great, the totally arbitrary numbers I picked to demonstrate how better mpg can save money aren't perfect. Thanks for the feedback.

In addition to the point @Kung made about you neglecting registration, insurance and maintenance costs on a commuter car, I'm trying to help temper expectations for how much money this would actually save by using realistic numbers.

Alright, updated numbers: $200 a week, Tundra @ 10mpg, Civic @ 20mpg, you save $100 a week. At 78 weeks (18 months) you've saved $7800 assuming gas prices don't increase. Insurance is $10/week, registration is like $5/week, and let's say maintenance is $20/week ($1000/yr). So end of the week you're saving $65. That's $3000+ a year all said and done. Seems to me like you're saving a decent amount of money, average income is $30k so that's like a 10% bonus for the average person.

I'm not trying to say anyone should do anything, all my comments were in regards to one guy saying he broke even on a beater in 18 months and another guy saying he didn't understand how that's possible. It seems completely possible if you can find a car with good mpg for under $10k.

    ^^^^Pretty accurate numbers.

Anyone considering this needs to out some hard math to it and make sure it pencils out. Don’t forget wear items (tires and brakes), and hedge your bets on big ticket repairs.

With all this being said, I drive what I drive because I like it. Have to assume most of you are the same if you're on a forum dedicated to your truck. I'm extremely glad that my father's appreciation for "better than the average" cars made it to my sorry self. I will just never be happy driving a an ugly, fart-sounding econobox like the rest of the skinny-jeans crowd, period. I would rather crawl, naked, through broken glass to work than drive a Prius or a Smart Car or any of the newer, hideously ugly, silent electric things. The Tundra is probably the most mainstream vehicle I've bought in a couple decades but I still bought it because I like the way it looks and drives. So if gas gets to $10/gallon, I'll just skip something else that I would have been spending that money on and continue driving in the vehicle that I enjoy driving. By the way, with this all being, rather obviously, an attempt to force everyone into an electric vehicle because all the other "climate change' propaganda wasn't successful; I'd like to know what we're supposed to do with all the giant anti-environment batteries as they wear out and get discarded from the zillions of electric cars the sell-outs in our gubment want us to buy?

Well, yeah, that was kind of what I was getting at. With that said, my aim wasn't necessarily to point out how anyone (OTHER than myself, that is) was forgetting stuff. I'm actually in the process of looking for a beater car to drive around, and I myself wasn't even thinking about the cost of gas for the new vehicle, insurance coverage, maintenance and upkeep, etc.

I'll have to crunch some #'s myself, and honestly, if I can get a decent car around $5K - $6K, sure, I'll probably do it, if for no other reason than to save a few $ here and there *and* have a beater car for my son to learn how to drive on (because he AIN'T learning on my Tundra LOL).
