When i started doing truck things with my '96 xj, and realized that a pickup bed is so much less useful than a trailer, i figure 3/4 of suburb/city people would be happier with a minivan/folding trailer. Unless they need something to remind them that they're men.

fast trucks are meh. You're not going to pull a whole G through a corner, and you need a cage at 11 sec 1/4 mile, and big manly tires arent z rated. So, have a truck for truck things, and a sportscar, motorcycle, boat, whatever to fulfill the adrenaline or whatevs.

I don't know... are you saying I should buy a saw to cut a piece of wood instead of using a drill to punch holes in a line until I can break it in half? Sounds kinda sketchy to me.

Please build one similar and tell me how comparatively reliable it is. Then let’s talk price, warranty, part availability, etc.

If the TRX had a Toyota emblem on it, with the same pros / cons, the overwhelming majority of folks on this forum would be praising it as the greatest thing ever and defending its liabilities to death. Hilarious.

Yes, where a guy was being holier than thou about a guy being a fan boy about a 700hp factory truck that he actually owns.

Where then guys ironically were talking trash on him and his truck for various silly reasons when they would be totally saying the opposite and fan boying out if it was a TRD product.

Srt10 ram 6spd swb was literally the best fast truck ever. In the same way the c5 z06 was the best vette ever.

swb 5.0 fords and 10 spd are a close 2nd. And can be had 4x4.

I had a RAM rcsb 4x4 w/5.7 and it was pretty good. Seats didn't fit me well, and the nannies were too intrusive. Other than that, I liked the truck. Only problem I had in 5 years was the 3rd brake light started to leak at year 3 (I fixed that easy enough).

I imagine the Tundra rcsb was/is really good too.

Neither would be a replacement for a Vette, etc.

I think the real issue with threads like this (found on any brand forum) is rabid, tribal brand loyalty. Personally, I can't imagine myself ever saying "We're Toyota people!" Sure, I currently drive Toyota and am happy with them, but Toyota is not who I am nor what makes me or validates my existence. I just don't get the psychology of people who define themselves by what they choose to drive.

"F U, I drive a Chevy!" Uh, OK, I guess that makes you important somehow? :notsure:

Agreed. That's poopy. I drive toyotas, but if their quality tanks, which apparently it did with the new tundra, a worthy alternative will be chosen.

    Go RAM!!!

I don't understand you guys who come to a Toyota truck enthusiasts' forum and get mad because there are people who think Toyota builds good trucks here.

Same thing could be said about buying ANY brand new vehicle. I'd much rather buy a used Tundra that's around 5-10 years old (as long as it's been decently used and not beaten on) knowing it will easily last another 10-20 if properly maintained. Not to mention 1st, 2nd, and 2.5 Gen tundras have proven reliability at this point that the new Gen doesn't have yet. I bought my first Tundra (2010 SR5 Regular Cab) for 16k and when it was totaled 3 years later the insurance company valued it at 14k... only 2k value loss over 3 years... Good luck maintaining value like that with ANY new truck or vehicle. PERIOD.

Please quote my part where I said the TRX isn't extremely reliable, but the 3rd gen is. I'll wait. The GM 5.3 and 6.2 is trash as well, I'll go ahead and add that to the laughable "extremely reliable."

Gen 3 reliabiltiy doesn't have enough field time or real world data for reliability. But as far as capability, yeah, it's far more capable than some of the V8's out there including the predecessor 5.7. Your post is just word vomit- misquoting, underplaying capability, like wtf rofl.

I would just like to say that if you make $220k/year only, there’s no way you’re buying a 100k truck. At least not if you’re semi-fiscally responsible/literate. More like 400k and even that’s kind of a stretch. But then again, maybe he got lucky on stocks or at a casino or something.

So, going off your math and using average truck prices right now, no one who makes less than $110k a year can afford a full size pickup.

You can't make this assertion without knowing a lot of details. How much did this person save for a down payment? What type of equity did they have in their trade? Do they have savings? Retirement? Is their house paid off?

I make under $220k per year (individually, household is a bit higher) and just bought an $85k truck. Lots of details led up to that. I consider myself to be financially responsible. I have a good amount of disposable income that goes into savings. If I were to stop working tomorrow I could go 5+ years with my current savings and investments before I'd need to work again, sell something, or dip into retirement, considering normal inflation (admittedly this calculation may be off considering current economical events). Am I financially reckless based on my income and the value of my truck?

So based on what you're telling me, you shouldn't buy a $50k Tundra unless you're making at least $200k ?

Actually he's saying you need to make $400k to buy a $100k truck, so you would need $200k salary to ***RESPONSIBLY*** buy a $50k Tundra based on this logic.

@Backslider youre correct there are a lot of figures that go into purchasing a vehicle.

I’d be curious, what percentage of you’re monthly income (after taxes) goes towards your truck? Compare that to your 401k, kids Roth IRA contributions? What is the value of your vehicle compared to your property (estate)? Maybe you’re older and have put quite a bit away which is great. I dunno, maybe I’m just cheap. Too often do I see young people with expensive things where they probably could have put that money towards a better use. I was once told the only two thing guaranteed to go up in life are property and taxes. Do what you want with your $

also, please note the caveat I put in the bottom with stocks etc.

About 7% of my monthly net goes toward THAT vehicle and all insurance.

It's closer to 13% when you take into consideration all of my other vehicles AND insurance/maintenance/fuel.

In total we're making payments on 3 vehicles right now, but one of them will be paid off before EOY.

While we could purchase with cash, that's demonstrably poor financial decision-considering you can make more than the cost of a $50k loan with the same investment and virtually zero risk.

Also - I'm not THAT old. I just hit 40. Maybe that's old? I don't need bonerpills yet so I feel pretty young.

How's that a poor decision when you can save those few thousand dollars you'd otherwise pay to the bank?

Spend $50k today, those funds are sunk.

Spend $50k over 5 years at 2.9% APR, you then keep $50k in your pocket today to invest. You can make close to 2% with zero-risk in a high yield savings account. You can make 5-12% with minimal risk with normal securities. You can make even more if you don't mind a higher level of risk.

As the APR goes up or down on the car loan, so should your strategy. Spending $50k (or whatever) cash on an instantly depreciating asset is not good financial sense. Use the bank's money to make more for yourself. Debt is only bad when you suck at managing it.
