I’ve got an early build ‘22. I’m 2 weeks shy of a year with it and I’m just shy of 6K miles. I have to say, I love the truck. Only a couple of issues that concern me. The stupid PPF on the rockers with the air bubbles, which my local dealer refused to replace, citing that this is the way it’s “supposed” to look because the PPF is so thick . The more troubling issue is that my truck tends to “cough” on launch. It did it once so bad that I thought it was going to die in the intersection. Dealer hasn’t figured this one out, yet. I did have the infotainment issues to begin with, but after my latest oil change and recall work, which was 100% software updates, the infotainment seems much better. To be clear, my infotainment would sometimes refuse to recognize my phone, and would sometimes pick up my wife’s phone instead if she was with me and refuse to pick mine up instead, even after she disconnected hers and turned her BT off.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the truck. It’s a limited TRD and I replaced a ‘13 CM platinum. Kind of wish I had held out for platinum for the goodies but I do love the TRD off-road setup, which you couldn’t get on a platinum when I bought mine.

My biggest complaint appearance wise is the mustache, which I thought for sure Toyota would fix on the ‘23. Apparently not. I had mine painted and, wow, it looks SO much better!

Towing is amazing. MPG is a slight disappointment but it’s better than some are reporting. P-footing, I can average 18 (note, I live in very hilly country which kills MPG). I’ve noticed if my altitude remains consistent, I can push that figure to near 20 as long as I stay under 60.

    My $0.02.

There is no way Toyota is changing a front end major body panel design for at least 3-5 years or whenever they do a mid cycle refresh. The mustache looks better painted yeah but I don’t think it’s a reason to not get the truck. You either like the styling or don’t.. or most people just buy “Toyota” and whatever comes with it (In this case, questionable looks).

I spend enough time riding around in Ford and GM products that have 350-400K on them to know that powertrain wise both of those brands will regularly go that distance. That might not have been the case 20 years ago, but the domestic manufacturers have caught up where trucks are concerned.

At the rate I drive it would take me 30 years to put that kind of mileage on a vehicle. So I’m pretty ambivalent about an engine/transmission that will only go 300K vs one that will go 500K before needing major service. The rest of the vehicle is far more likely to be nickel and dime’ing you into bankruptcy at that age.

I personally like the Tundra better, but mainly because I just prefer a truck. The interiors are identical other than the difference between a truck bed and an SUV cargo space.
The Tundra is quicker. I’d assume that’s due to weight since everything else is the same other than the Tundra is 4WD and the Sequoia is not. All the Tundras have been quicker than the Sequoias though.
Stereo also sounds better in the Tundra, but that’s also always been the case between the two. More space for the speakers to fill in a Sequoia.

Ultimately they feel and handle pretty much identically. I’d say for the price difference, unless you just need the third row you’ll be happier with the Tundra. My wife has driven Sequoias for 11 years and has been anxiously awaiting the update. She personally prefers them over trucks, and it’s useful when we have the whole family with us.
The third row and cargo area is literally the only difference. Just a matter of whether or not you’re more likely to haul people than cargo.

I’ll try and remember to get pics later. There is definitely significantly less space. The third row seats also don’t have the full floor board like they used to due to the battery. We are disappointed in that, but it doesn’t come into play very often. My wife was happy to give that up in exchange for updated technology, looks, and comfort. Overall she’s very happy with it.

I’ve repeated this ad nauseam over my years on this site:

First of all, I have pretty much zero debt.

Secondly, my kids are all pretty much grown. I don’t have to pay for child care, etc.

Last (and most importantly), I don’t drink. Just what I save per month in alcohol vs most of you is more than enough to pay for extra Toyotas.

I also made out like a bandit during the Beanie Baby craze in the 90’s.

Oh that is a fact. I know people that make 62.00 an hour that are broke due to the "little things" that add up at the end of the month.

. GM has defended class action law suits successfully with their warranties only covers manufacturing defects but not design defects. Which is the ultimate FU to their customers. But lawyers are lawyers so assume other OEM than GM have that rider on that warranties as well if the costs mount up from a bad design

I’ve been around a lot of high mileage domestics as well. All of them nickel and dimed myself and family members getting past 200k. One example: I had a Suburban that went to 260k. It needed lots of repairs…one time, the rear end grenaded on the way home from kids soccer practice at around 220k. I limped home using the front axle in 4wd and found a junkyard replacement only for the wiring harness to then start going bad. The truck would die on left turns from a stop, lol. It was the needed AC work that was going to cost more than the truck was worth that led us to finally get rid of it. There are a lot of farm trucks on both my and my wife’s sides of the family as we both come from farming families. To be fair, those trucks are rode hard and put up wet. But they’re constantly in and out of the shop.

I’m merely addressing the hyperbole of “the 3rd gen destroys the 2nd gen in every way” statements. It’s actually really hard to destroy a 2nd gen, lol. Even when used for jobs bigger than the door jamb says it should be.

@War Machine, and others: If the Sequoia is identical (or nearly so) except for the rear end, are the Sequoia buyers also having the complaints about cheap interior components and wind noise etc that the Tundra owners are on this site? Or could it be, just wondering, if the 2022/23 Tundra owners here are comparing to gen 2.0/2.5 more and not recognizing how the auto market has moved in these areas. I'm not saying that defects and wind noise is acceptable, I'm just wondering if the Sequoia and other new pandemic vehicles are having similar problems to the 2022/23 Tundras?

See above concerning the cabin noise.

As for the “cheap interior components”, I don’t see it on either. I’ve only had the Tundra for a month and the Sequoia a couple of weeks, but nothing seems noticeably worse or better than on any of my previous ones.
They’re different, but nothing has struck me as poorly made so far. If something breaks down the road my opinion may change, but so far I don’t have an issue with the interiors on either.
Console storage is smaller than on my 17 and 21 Tundras, but those have less storage than my 2011 Tundra does. Not a huge deal for me.

I don't believe the Tundra was ever made in Japan or the Tacoma for that matter. The 4 runner LC and Lexus models...thats a different story.

My girlfriend refers to that as "putting it out into the universe." So I try to refrain from even thinking negatively, right now I'm thinking it would be nice to win the mega millions. Now THAT she wouldn't mind.

and from speculation, the 6th gen 4runner looks to continue being built in japan at the tahara plant since its so related to other models being built for world wide countries that are not available to the usa market based on the 4runner/prado lines.

I thought the 1st gen Tundra/Sequioa 4.7 was at one point made in Japan and then switched to american production. I remember in supercharger threads there was some difference in the pistons or rods or something that made the japanese build engine stronger.

The engine maybe?...I think the trucks from the start were made in Indiana and then in 2008 all was consolidated to the San Antonio plant. But who knows with toyota,

I wasn't suggesting a body panel redesign. I wouldn't think it would take much to throw body color paint on those three pieces, however, and the two rear bumper arms as well. There are a million posts on this site and others of guys (me included) painting those parts or just ordering black replacements, etc. That should tell you they really missed the mark with that one thing. I love the look of my truck, now that that part is done.

I laugh hysterically at the Toyota guys unwavering defense of the 2022. For a thousand years Consumers Reports was the greatest magazine on the planet because it constantly praised Toyota and the Tundra. But as soon as they say the 2022 is, well, not so great everyone cries that the magazine is complete BS and is biased towards other brands. Sound familiar Ford, Chevy, Dodge. Now some nobody YouTuber who literally bought his own Tundra and has many, many, many documented problems and again the pouting runs rampant. Let me fill you all in on a tiny little secret, when the prostitute tells you that you're the best - she's lying. I'll be in the backyard flogging myself for speaking a negative about the 2022 since I'm well aware of the repercussions of such insane behavior.

I'm confused as to some of this "discussion" as right up there with death and taxes is the inevitability of a first year vehicle having more than it's share of problems/issues. Why should this be any different? If you choose to buy a first year new model, you know you are the guinea pig and there will be teething problems. What separates a good vehicle/manufacturer from the rest is how they address the consumer issues. I don't, but does anyone remember what the 2nd gen Tundras were like when they came out? I would think there were some issues then too, no? Clearly they sorted them out if there were and I'd expect them to do the same with the 2022. Just shouldn't be a shock that the '22 has issues, nor should it be some sort of mortal sin to point them out. I'll reserve judgment on how the 3rd gen will be remembered in the annuls of time until AFTER a couple model years. See me in 2025 for an, at least, semi-informed opinion on this matter.

ETA: I know you are all waiting, breathlessly, for my opinion on the 2022 but you, and the world, will just have to find a way to exist while you wait.

To be 100% honest the new tundra is 96% of the way there for me. Does it have issues? Yes, did my 07, 14, 16 and 19- absolutely and some of them far worse than my 22 (leaking rear main seal from the factory, cam tower leak, exploding battery, etc). No truck is perfect folks, ever. Toyota really should have stepped it up and made the truck120%, but that’s not the toyota way.

May I suggest letting the prostitute do the flogging?

Oh, and not directed at 737, here’s another one of those 500k mile trucks nobody has, just for fun. This one has a blower too https://vimeo.com/779367530
