I do this too. Oil only with Mobil 1 every 5k. Oil and filter every 10k. Toyota says filter is good for 10k so I leave it for 10k. I feel better about changing the oil every 5k though.

I only drive like five or 6000 miles a year. So I just change it every 5K, both filter and oil. It took a long time for me to get out of the habit of wanting to do it every 3K. Of course this was years ago when I finally upped it to 5K on my old ram. I was using synthetic and it was so expensive that I caved. That thing is still running. I just can’t get myself to go 10,000 miles. I get it that people have their oil tested Blackstone, and everything is fine. I just can’t do it. I might consider it if it was all highway.

I usually go only 3K with filter on all my vehicles. Too much color in the oil by 5K.
BTW, for those who change their filter every other change, would you wash your clothes with the same water you had from the previous load?

Tractors love the synthetic, makes them feel really good inside, any way, Learned this in Auto class in college, don't know what you would be getting discoloration from ,except leaking gaskets or seals, or blowby at rings, or bad valves, sounds like another problem. As far as filter changes , no problem at 5k, Toyota, and Mobile , recommends 10k oil changes, and at 9.5 qts, there is plenty of clean oil circulating , the filter will pickup any damage causing particles. As for same bath water , ya as little kids with no money ,we always bathed together and came out just as clean, hahahahaha.

I regularly take showers and put the same skidmarked ginch back on after. Other times I also change my ginch without showering. I like to mix it up. ;)

Something as important as oil changes though, oil and filter at the same time, every 8,000.

Old School I am, was a big challenge to move to 5k from 3k. Conscious will not let me do 10k and I must pay. I feel better about getting under truck 2-3 times a year if for nothing else to have eyes on the undercarriage. Oil and filter every 5k and I don't have to worry.

I have a FFV. And since I only run E85 fuel Toyota says the OCI is every 5K.

The lucky guys are the ones who don't run E85. Mama Toyota tells them OCI is every 10K.

The Tundra oil field delivery rig managed 1,000,000 plus miles with perfect engine internals on exclusively dealer oil, OEM filters and a religiously documented 10K OCI (all changes done at the dealer). The engineers who designed the 5.7 actually took that motor apart and inspected every component, finding hardly any wear and absolutely no build up of any contaminants. Sure you can use different oil, different filters, different change intervals, etc.. That’s all just opinion though. No other company has documented a million miles and followed it with a tear down by the actual engineers who designed the 5.7. Anyone can say this oil is better or that filter is better but the evidence isn’t the same. I’ve resigned myself to just following the Toyota recommendations. I figure if the engineers recommendations were good enough for a million miles, it’ll be good enough for me.

Change every 10k just like the truck tells me, along with the filter.

But I just watched a video this guy filled his screw in filter old type to me with oil before replacing it. Never seen foot heard of that before. I know the manual gives with or without filter quarts, still never seen it done.

I've always filled the old type filters before screwing them in, will do the same when i get to my first change on the Tundra. Does it make a difference?, not sure, but old habits die hard.

I have done that for spin-on canister oil filters that were mounted vertically. Near horizontal mounted filters are a challenge...you can only fill the filter slightly over half full, then try to screw it on while the remaining dry filter media soaks up the oil.

Reason for pre-filling oil filters: It takes a few seconds for the filter canister to fill before oil continues on to the oil galleries under pressure. While the filter is filling, your bearings are not running dry, but there is no hydrostatic wedge from oil pressure to lift the crank journals off the bearing inserts. On some engines, you can hear the change in noise level when oil pressure hits the hydraulic lifters several seconds after the initial startup. If you prefill the filter, oil pressure is delivered to the oil galleries near instantaneously. Does pre-filling the filter make any difference in life of the bearings?...probably not, but I know I've done everything I can to minimize the start up wear.

Different look-wise for sure, but you can still fill the canister with oil before you screw it in. Not very different when you compare the two functionally.

True. The only disadvantage to pre-filling the UR cartridge filter housing with filter in place is that half of the the long Tundra filter sticks out the top of the housing. Nothing you can do about that, but you've at least cut the filling time in half.

Problem with the blanket statement of "dealer oil" is that you don't know what oil that happens to be. All dealers use different oil and 9 times of 10 it is NOT Toyota Genuine Motor Oil. So, yes, you can use any oil you want and it will have the same impact as "dealer oil" because dealer oil is probably the same thing or cheaper oil that you would buy. Most Toyota dealers that I am aware of (4 in my local area) use Mobile Super Synthetic bulk oil because it is cheaper that buying actual Toyota Genuine Motor oil or even Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy or Mobil 1 Extended Performance, and dealerships are all about using the cheapest option. So, really the only thing that million mile truck getting there on "dealer oil" proves is that the Tundra will go a long way on cheap oil. Imagine what it could do on a better oil?

Has anyone tried the mobil 1 truck and suv oil? just wondering how that compares to advanced fuel economy.

    Working on it
People need to realize , oil is lubricant, there aren't that many different producers , just different additives , and types of blends. Just like alot of products made same place , just different labels at end of assy line. Do you really think anyone would have even bought 0-20 oil 30 yrs ago for racing ? No we all ran 10 w40 at the least , but alot of us ran straight 30 or 50 weight in in our race cars , on and off road , and dual remote filter setups , and remote coolers , just to get an x-tra 2-3 qts of oil. Engines are made so much better now days , and in tundras running 9.5 qts of oil , main thing is just keeping it filtered good. This is why Mobile 1 , and valvoline , and oters can boast 100,000 mile warranties , and 15,000 mile oil changes . Main thing has always been and always will be , keep oil FILTERED , and run top brand filters. Changes time frame is mainly personal , and habit , biggest thing with oil is visual on dipstick , and really look at the filter when changing.

Misspoke? If you are running 9.5 qrts in a Tundra, you are doing it wrong.
