so if you buy the alum cap, it comes with short filter thing and you have to take the longer filter thingy from your car and replace it with the short one in the aluminum filter cap? is that right?
why doesn't Toyota sell one with the long filter?
is there any danger to break or stress the pins when doing this?

Does anyone know the reason why they go with this type of filter rather than the conventional canister type? To me this is more complicated and more chance of leakage. I see more cons than pros. Thoughts?

It’s just a cap/filter holder. Exact same as OEM but not plastic.

Not sure why, but the cartridge must be beneficial for some reason over the sealed canister. My Audi A8 uses the cartridge style as well.

I just took the shorter one out of my just bend the little butterfly clips up gently wth a standard screwdriver, push down on the filter cylinder, twist and remove, then put the one from the origional filter cap back in the new filter cap and reverse the process.

After doing some research it appears that Toyota is trying to go green wth the canisters so there is less waste like wth the spin on filters.

Yes you can drain the filter canister only if you have issues with the filter without having to drain the oil pan, came in handy when I was having issues with my filter canister, finally got the plastic one off and new alluminum one installed. Seems the alluminum canister has a higher oil capacity since I had to add more oil back in than I drained out of the plastic one.

Yes you do. The one that comes with the aluminum canister is too short it needs to match the length of the filter. I have the canister I’m just waiting for my next oil change do it. Some people of had luck just pushing down and spinning the tube out. But most I’ve read say you have to bend those little tabs slightly.

Make sure you do it. It’s what keeps the filter from collapsing on itself.

I don’t think I follow. I think you need to swap over the aluminum plug out of your plastic cartridge. Don’t forget new O-rings that come with new filters.
If what you’re talking about is a spring that is underneath the tube just make sure whatever you take out you put back in. Whether it’s parts from the old one swapping over to the new one or vice versa.

From my knowledge the only thing you need to swap is the tube. Just make sure you put it back together the way it came apart.

I was wondering the exact same thing. How does it install? I just want to know before I do the oil change.
