Are you not able to remove the oil cap?

I have these universal wrenches in case I have problem with the regular cap wrench.

For the ones breaking teeth off that housing post up a picture of the tool your using. I think that would be impossible with the MOTIV X tool I use.

I had the aluminum filter housing on my last truck, ifI say it was a little easier to work with during oil changes. Will probably buy another one for this truck soon.

I couldn’t get it off I was afraid I would mess it up more than I had, the dealership where I bought must have overtorqued it but it had only been 2500 miles since the oil was changed so I just left it for now and put my new mobil 1 full synthetic oil in, I migh try one of those special filter tools next time.

I have the same. When torqued to 18 ft lbs it shouldn’t be an issue. The issue comes from being put on way to tight.

Here's the aluminum cap @15whtrd was referring to and a photo of the tabs on both sides of the tube. You have to keep the tube from your existing cap when you replace it. Did you swap over the tubes @BTBAKER maybe that's why it didn't seat properly?

    20180415_193654.jpg

    20180415_193701.jpg

Edit : Nevermind, the tube that comes with the aluminum cap is shorter, not longer.

That very well could be. I did NOT swap it over. That’s why I love this site.
I have one in my garage. My plan is to rotate them so I can thoroughly clean them in between. I wonder if they sell just the middle part so I don’t have to swap it every time?

X3. Right tool for the job. Those adjustable ones are ok for Honda’s or small block chevy’s. Not this crazy shaped filter cap.

What do you use to clean? I spray all my pieces down with non chlorinated degreaser. No residue and dries in less than a minute. Also works great to clean up driveway drips or exhaust or wherever it gets.

Those crazy shape wrenches come in handy when the oil caps are rounded out. They bailed me out a few times.

I do the same but I like to swap and let it dry. It’s probably not necessary but I do it anyway.

Yeah nothing wrong with being cautious. I let it sit for probably 5-10 minutes while I’m just letting it drip then re-install.

I’m sure that plenty. I like the spare to. If something goes south during an oil change I want it handy. It’s not something I can run to the auto parts store a buy.

When I did mine I lightly pushed it to a tilt and with a little more pressure in snapped out without any damage at all and reinstalled it the same way.

Dumb question...so the cartridge wrench I got for the plastic one will not work on the aluminum one?

    Here's the one I bought.
Genuine Toyota 15620-31060 Oil Filter Cap Assembly https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008BHP68A?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

    Along with this
PBT PBT71114 Oil Filter Drain Hose https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005R3SSUY?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

I also got the fumoto valve and lock, and the filter wrench I listed above.

I also would like to know the correct aluminum housing. Wanting to start doing my oil changes. No more free toyota care for me and dealer charged me $120 for oil change... i have always done my own but this new style will take some learning to get used to...just feels good and can save time and money.
So...a question... service guy who changed my oil did not drain thru the drain plug...he always just unscrewed the filter housing and let the oil splash out that way.. is that ok or bad?

Yes...he never removed the drain plug. I always went back to the shop while he did the oil change...he just unscrews the entire filter housing and drained the oil that way. Now that i think about it, i hope he was not leaving old oil in the engine.

Changed (tried) the oil in my wife's Camry after having the dealer do it previously only to find out the oil filter canister was so freaking tight I couldn't budge it. After trying and trying, the little tabs broke off cracking the canister and I was fucked. Figured I would tow it back to the dealer that did the change figuring they may be decent people and help me out. Wrong. That oil change cost me about $300 with the tow. Oh, and of course they didn't have an aluminum one in stock so I had to buy another plastic one there only to replace it with the aluminum one on the next change.

Point is, buy the aluminum one before you get fucked by the plastic one. My Tundra has had the aluminum one in since the first change, its been great!
