I spoke with a service technician at my dealership yesterday. He said there is no silver coating on the bearings. I called blackstone later and they told me that I shouldn’t be concerned. Of course I still am a little..

So what’s dumping silver into @eddiefromcali’s oil?

Here's one without silver in it, 6k on the oil and 30k on the truck. This was with ~800 miles of towing a small boat on the highway and ~3000 additional highway miles.

Remember when it was winter and everyone had their panties in a wad about fuel dilution? "they're making oil" they said. "they have injector problems" they said. The weather warmed up and we haven't seen a high fuel dilution since.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    good report.

FWIW...those results are VERY close to my 32k report on my '20 5.7L.
    like near exact...and I have 106k now.

Yah I was happy with that report, I'm kicking around running 5w-30 euro for a longer drain verses the M1 EP 0w-20. The viscosity got sheard down from 8.8 to 7.5 so the extra viscosity and HTHS would be a perk. I don't think the oil would be in grade after 10k even without fuel dilution.

I have been watching this thread since it started. I don't recall seeing any reports that showed serious concern, did I miss any that do? Thanks.

did you ever figure out for sure if silver is in the toyota main bearing?

seems like there is conflicting info there

Silver is often electroplated on bearings due to its excellent heat and friction resistive properties. Whether or not Toyota main bearings have silver, I can't say definitively, but my guess is they do.

I haven’t seen anything from Toyota but I’d love to hear theories on an alternate source of the silver found in the 3rd gen oil. I’ve seen Blackstone say solder?? A. I’ve never heard of soldering anywhere along lubricated surfaces, B. If that were the case, we would see concentrations diminish over time similar to break-in wear - not increase.

Toyota themselves has confirmed abnormal bearing wear in trucks that didn’t show symptoms and we are supposed to conclude its just coincidence a large % of these trucks show silver in the oil…

So I’m going with “yes” to silver in Toyota bearings based upon the absence of any other source but also doubt Toyota is going to tell the world their process for selecting bearing materials especially when it will be under extreme scrutiny given the circumstances. Zero upside for them to do so.

ok, thanks, just curios if it was 100% they were using that since that one oil testing company said no they arent.

maybe we should buy a bearing and test the SOB and put it to rest, lol

thanks for the reply, I guess I was interested in if we have 100% known answer here, there is conflicting info and then a shitload of speculation, but I guess we don't know for sure yet.

    hell, maybe we never will.

I can tell you that the best main bearings for high compression race engines definitely are silver electroplated. Here is just one example of many. They even mention the Toyota Supra in the article.

ok, thanks for the info and context.

Hell, how much is one of these bearings? lets buy one and scrape and scratch off and Ill send a sample to the lab I have access to.

we be nice to know for 100% sure, that way these oil analysis mean more

edit*. hell. sorry @eddiefromcali I just saw this was for oil analysis only

Mobil makes a ESP 0W20. Since I paid for the prepaid maintenance up to 85K. I’m going to do 5K changes. One by me and the other by the dealer. I’m debating ESP or the EP. I may go with the EP since there will be runs with Toyota oil.

I sent out an oil sample to Blackstone Labs in June after discovering my truck falls into the engine recall category. Blackstone received my sample 6/24. I just got my report yesterday 7/19. (For those who are wondering, it takes a few weeks to get results)

I have a 23' Limited Off-Road non-hybrid that was mfg. 10/2022. I have mixed highway/city driving with this vehicle. I live in central Ohio and experience all different types of weather conditions. We have taken this truck on multiple long-distance road trips. I have hauled multiple yards of topsoil with this truck and have not experienced any abnormal engine issues. After the software update for the transmission, I no longer experience the extreme hesitation/throttle lag that many forum members noticed. The only changes I made to the truck were installing the mesh Toyota TRD air filters and throwing on the TRD Pro muffler-back exhaust dual tip tail pipe.

With a newborn, wife, and 4 dogs, I certainly hope I do not experience engine failure in the future due to "debris." I could not imagine driving a compact loaner around town if the engine fails....

I prefer to perform my own oil changes and basic maintenance because I have my own tools and capable, I know it will be done correctly, I do not like to wait at a dealership, and I am too busy to schedule on "their time."

I installed a stainless magnetic oil drain bolt made by Votex with my first oil change at 5,000 miles.
I use OEM Toyota (Denso) oil filters with each oil change.
I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20.
The second oil change was performed at 11,000 miles, the third at 17,000 miles and this last one (4th) was done at 25,000 miles.

I did not want to extend the interval on the last change as long as I did, but my wife and I were expecting our son in May and we were extremely busy with work and preparation for our lifestyle change. Ideally, I would like to change the oil every 5-6k miles, however the TBN report shows I was ok with the longer interval 8k.

Here is my test result from Blackstone Labs (I will be sending another sample with the next change to compare trends):

Didn’t run an oil analysis report, but did request my used oil filter from my Toyota dealer after my 20,000 mile service on my 2022. Pulled filter apart and ran magnet through it, below is results. I assume it is fairly normal to see this amount in a newer engine, but I have no frame of reference or experience with what’s normal and what’s not.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but at 20,000 miles, I wouldn't expect an engine to still be shedding break in metal.
That, to me, looks like a concerning amount of metal.
I'm comparing to my roughly 5K mile '24 filter inspection, pics here:

Looks like yours at 5K was much cleaner! One would think by 20K they would be flushed out. Is concerning.

Looks like I got a good report for my first analysis. Not sure whether to be happy or sad about that. ;-). This sample was taken with only about 2300 miles into the change cycle.

Just got back the Analysis on my sample after the first 1,800 miles on the truck. 1,310 of those miles were in the first 48 hours of ownership (all highway 70-95mph) and the next 490 miles were all city (stop and go 0-60mph).

After a long wait... here is my second report. Next one will be at 15K oil change.

Side note- I cant belive how long it took for them to run this. My Forester report is a week older and still has not been done yet. S089590.jpg
