I’d like to know how many engines have actually needed the valves to be adjusted as well. How many 300k plus 2UZs are running strong but NeED THeiR VaLvES AdJuSTeD

To be fair, I have a 5vz (3.4l V6) in my '03 Tacoma, and I adjusted the valves for the first time at 278k miles. 9 of 24 valves were out of spec, and I did gain back about 1.5 mpg (average) since doing so.

Subjectively the truck seemed to pull a bit harder. I can now break the tires loose in 2nd gear doing a "California stop" on a right hand turn, and couldn't do that beforehand

That motor uses the same shim over bucket valve design as the 2uz

Less than half at 300k. And not doing any damage as they were most likely loose. Not bad at all

Actually they tighten over time. Then you put a thinner shim in to make room so-to-speak and loosen them back into spec. But I get your point. Bulletproof and basically maintenance free design

The 4.7 (2uz) had shim under bucket valve design requiring camshaft removal to adjust clearances.

And here I thought that I was the only weird one who prefers the timing belt system. The required maintenance is a double edged sword-it does cost $$$$, but there is that peace of mind that your timing system has been renewed, along with the water pump and perhaps other things while you’re there.

I do love the 5.7 in my 07, but the 4.7 in my wife’s GX470 is oh so buttery smooth.

Not to mention also how quiet the 4.7 is. When my daughter initially purchased the Tundra I’m now driving, I was shocked at how loud it was at startup. The Car Care Nut guy also made note of that comparing the two engines.
Started watching Sarah-n-Tuned on YT, and can’t wait for her to start up her 4.7 she installed in her classic Celica.
