Not 100% sure on pricing this year.
    Tentative prices are around
    8 oz glass...$10
    16oz glass.... $20
    32oz plastic jug....$28
    3.5 oz maple leaf.... $

as you can see the 1 quart plastic jugs are the best value. Also easier to ship, but those glass bottles look so damn good.

I've had this before and like Sean said pretty much tastes like water, pricey water. Straight out of the bucket ain't half bad if you're thirsty :pScreenshot_20180215-204219.jpg

I saw some people at work drinking that. I can't believe what it costs. I could probably make more on that than syrup hahaha.

And as far as being thirsty, trust me I've drank many a gallon of cold sap. When you're out in the woods on a 50 degree day sweating from busting your ass, theres noting better.

I was just doing some math and figured out that each one of those 5 gallon buckets I use to carry sap from the tree to the truck, is worth about $10 when it's all said and done and made into syrup. Tripping, falling, and losing 10 gallons of sap is a tough pill to swallow.

So a gallon of sap would sell for like $25?
Today alone I collected about $12,000 of hipster water. Jesus I'm in the wrong maple business.

We did pigs and chickens when I was a kid. I'll definitely do this when I get some decent land and my kid is older.

I don't know the first thing about your business so forgive me for thinking out loud. Could you possibly have a four wheeler with a trailer that has a tank and a sifin? Then limiting the amount of syrup spilt, saving your back and raising your profits. Just a thought.

Yes that would be ideal. When I was a kid living in my parents house I used my 3 wheeler and a trailer to collect sap in the yard and along the trails in the woods behind my house, it was great.
With the location of our trees that we tap now, there's unfortunately no way to get to them with an ATV, would sure save a ton of time if we could. We have 150 taps on 5 different peoples properties in town, all within about a mile or 2 of the sugar house.

Your definitely doing some hard manual labor. It would be nice if you could run a long hose with a pump attached to it and have a big container in your truck bed. Have you ever toured any large maple syrup operations to see how they run their production?

I'm almost set-up at one property to run a tube from a tank in the woods to empty buckets into and pump to the truck. That'll save some time and effort for sure. Ill post pics when i set that up.
The other properties wouldn't work well for that kind if set up. Plus they are mostly old farm houses and people like seeing the old tin buckets out there. we trade syrup for letting us tap their trees.
I wish I could have all my trees on one property so i could eliminate the buckets all together and run 3/16 tubing from tree to tree, then into a main line and suction pump into a tank. Unfortunately there are only 6 maple trees in my brothers yard where the barn is. Thats how the big places do it. They have 10,000 taps all on tubing and vacuum pumps that send it into tanks through 4" main lines. It's crazy to see.

It would if I had trees along a trail in the woods. Most of my trees are in people yards and woods with trails that can barely be walked down.
This is our truck with the tank, I park it as close to a group of trees as possible. Which sometimes is feet from trees, sometimes a hundred yards away.
I had a trailer and tank when I was a kid I pulled with my 3 wheeler. It was great but all my trees were in my yard or along dirt bike trails in the woods.

I would love to put some tubing in the yard /woods here. It would have to be all on gravity as I have no power source for a vacuum pump. Could run into a tank in a low spot, would need to be about 30 feet lower than highest tap to drain correctly, a surverer could tell me if it would be an ok drop to the tank. It could work but if it doesn't then I'm out a grand worth of equipment, and days of work settung it up and then having to re-tap every tree and hang a bucket.

    How Was Maple Syrup Discovered?
Legend has it that the first maple syrup maker was an Iroquois woman, the wife of Chief Woksis. One late-winter morning, the story goes, the chief headed out on one of his hunts, but not before yanking his tomahawk from the tree where he'd thrown it the night before. On this particular day the weather turned quite warm, causing the tree's sap to run and fill a container standing near the trunk. The woman spied the vessel and, thinking it was plain water, cooked their evening meal in it. The boiling that ensued turned the sap to syrup, flavoring the chief's meal as never before. And thus began the tradition of making maple syrup.
