Started work on a 10x16ft lean too off the back of the barn to hold some fire wood. We can't fit a whole season's worth of wood in it but it will help give us easy access to dry wood. Poured 4 tubes today in 95 degree heat. I'll start framing it up next week.

Harbor freight. Borrowed it from a buddy. He said it was under $150. Was worth its weight I'm gold that day. It would do 80lbs at a time in about 3 minutes. Just moved it from hole to hole, I was shocked how well it worked.

The key was to add the cement and water at the same time while it was turning. Learned that by trial and error.

In my experience trees with branches that grow more horizontal break much easier, especially down here with the snow and ice sitting on branches.
I very rarely see any maples growing like the older one in your photo, they normally grow upward until they reach over 100 years old maybe 150. The newly planted tree looks very healthy and is growing nicely. I would prune off any main branches (ones directly attached to the trunk) that are not growing upwards. I see one little guy at the bottom that I'd trim off. As for the older tree I think I would cut some of the branches that appear to be growing out towards you truck, they look susceptible to breakage and when they do, they tear and cause a "cavity"

@driverdog I'd cut branch 1 near the trunk and prune some of branch 2, the cut will remove what looks like the worst branch. The prune should promote vertical growth.
And I took the liberty to make your truck faster as well. You're welcome ;)

Was just thinking about everything I need to start working on for next season. I still have a few orders I need to ship out to a few members this week. I've been slacking and I apologize. 6 months til the season is upon us. Need to finish building wood shed, get and split about 6 cords, and come up with a new pump system for one sugar grove where we have 60 taps. 6 months away from this...

Dude those are beauties. I can send you some taps that work with tubing into 5 gallon buckets. Those I can send free, you'll just need to buy tubing and buckets. 2 taps per tree.
I can sell you metal buckets, taps, and tops of you want that old school look.
You just need a way to cook it, a small cinder block firepit that holds some stainless hotel pans is easiest, build a fire underneath.
Propane works too, but not a grill, you need a double burner and big pan.
I can walk ya through it all. Let me know what you wanna do.
You can figure each tap will yield 20-40oz of syrup per year. The sap to syrup gallon ratio is about 50:1
