Show Off! (Just kidding) Real nice truck. Better hang on to it. I've always liked the look of the soft top. I'd like to be able switch from my Extang to a soft top when I need it. Had the soft top on my like to have list for awhile now. Wish one would show up on Craig's List.

I had a friend years ago who had an engine stand in his living room. His wife didn't really appreciate it.

Your 4.7 isnt vvti though right? Only the vvti engines are interference.

And I've done a thousand Tbelt on these things, ain't nothin to worry about.

I call bullshit. Vvti is interference, pre vvti is not. Atleast my toyota school I went to taught us that, but who knows...☺

Why would u not want vvti? I think they run alot better than older ones

IM going buy what gates says and alldata :anonymous:.. Who the hell knows . Only way to find out is pull the heads and lets do some measuring shall we?.

Im more the old school, in engines, less crap you have on them, the better they run, and give you less problems.

If I am not mistaken doesn't VVTi have a lot to do with maintaining high torque #s even at at low end RPM's I am sure that I read that at approx 1500 you have almost 70% available torque and gets better as you go up. If my small 2.7L in my 09 Tacoma didn't have VVTI it would have sucked way worse than it did. Didn't Honda first use this configuration with it's small displacement VTec engines?

thats what the vvt-i was designed for.

Honda has always had problems with vtech ( i havent looked at current problems) Always had solenoid or gasket to solenoid failure. I dont know if honda has changed the design lately in the vtech but it needs alot of work, as the system ( vtech) get more miles it does have a high failure rate do to oil getting into the solenoid and shorting it out or leaking thru the unit. I have work on more than my share on those pos design.

side note:: not its not as bad as what GM did to there vvt engines can you say HEAD replacement anyone? $4000 head replacement on v8 do to the way it was designed (poorly designed) . Gm has fixed the problems with the head but 7 years later and many top ends with see high failure. They will make a mint on replacements.

Vtec gives the valve train more lift and duration by using oil pressure. Vvti uses oil pressure to change valve timing. Doesn't effect lift or duration. Very different system. Toyota had vvtli in the 2zz engine in the early 2000s. That incorporated a valve lift change. Ran good but wasn't really reliable.
Pretty much every manufacturer is using a valve timing system now. It all boils down to emissions at the end of the day.

Anything to meet the pain in the arse EPA cafe standards.
I do remember finding a good read at Tundra HQ from 2007 which I can't find now. It was comparing the Tundra 5.7L to Dodge's 5.7L Hemi. The gist of the article was how that the non- Hemi VVTi Tundra 5.7L was able to put up similar (but not quite) HP and torque numbers with VVTi versus the Dodge 5.7L push rod Hemi engine and that the VVTi setup contributed to a much better torque band than the Dodge Hemi. I think it is no coincidence that Toyota VVTi configured engines are getting much better HP/torque #'s than similar Toyota engines without VVTi. You would think that a better fuel burn would not only contribute to better emission #'s but would also see increased HP/torque in combination with the ECU providing better control over fuel efficiency, shift points, and such which you know more about than I do because you see this on a daily basis. Your thoughts?

Your pretty right on.... the vvti allows for a decent amount of valve timing retard and advance. So when scaling a small hill, it doesn't need to down shift all the time, it will try to adjust timing first to gain that extra torque without raising rpms or adding more fuel, like a down shift would require. This leads to better emissions. Its a great idea forsure, it's obviously proven itself....
