Why would the headliner be falling down like that? Humidity? Flood? I've never seen one do that

Dang I didn't see that. I figured I'd pass it along for you to do the legwork. Sorry for not catching the damaged goods.

Sucks to miss out on a nice rig so close to home. Keep on it, the effort will come to fruition....

I mentioned it to the seller and he is denying any damage even though it's listed in the history report attached to the listing. I'm moving on, regardless. I appreciate the extra "eyes" out there looking out for me. That's awesome and I thank you all. I will be looking at a truck tomorrow when my wife and I are out running errands. It's a 2006, white access cab minus a camper shell. Looks decent from the pictures but it does have a bunch of small rock chips in the paint on the front bumper and I would imagine, grill and leading edge of the hood. I'm thinking I can do a good rattle can job on white paint and it should look good enough. I'll get a better idea tomorrow when I see it in person. 223k miles, CA vehicle with no rust asking $10,995 at a small, local used car stealership. I was thinking 03-04 were my target years just because most of the bugs are worked out and those don't have the extra emissions on them. Should I even care about that?
    I'll keep you posted :mudding:

Good on you for looking into the carfax as well as the catching that headliner in those pics. I wouldn't worry about rock chips if the motor and tranny drive well on that 06 and everything else checks out. I had my 06 til 330k and i can't ever speak of having any issues with the air injection pump so unfortunately I can't speak much of what it takes to repair it. Maybe one of the resident 1st geners will chime in. @shifty` @KNABORES ?

Edit. Apparently I'm behind on the power curve. Beat me to the call out @KNABORES hahaha

My buddy is looking for a 06 double cab 4x4 in SoCal and I’m helping him look. I came across this access cab that has some solid upgrades and the sellers it willing to lower price to 11.5. It does have some things I don’t like that are easy fixes like the front bumper and rear tail lights.

Check out this item on OfferUp.

Hey, thanks for the head's up. Not really my style but I appreciate you pointing it out. The one I'm looking at tomorrow has a bumper/bar up front as well which will come off immediately if I purchase it. Believe it or not, I like the cloth interior better than the leather. They hold up really well and feel much better when getting into the truck at 120º in the desert

Personally, I'd avoid 05-06 solely for the AIP and no dipstick. That being said, if a nice one came up I'd buy it. It's still a 1st gen.

I've seen maybe a half a dozen here in the last 4 years? I've seen just as many a-pillar/windshield leaks destroy the in-dash fusebox, though, so ... Meh. I wouldn't be super concerned about it, and the '05-'06 does come with the 5spd auto, and adds more TQ/HP. It's harder to Yellowbox if you plan to use larger tires. It's easier to retrofit OEM steering wheel radio controls, and wiring may already be there in the clock spring. There are pros and cons across the board, really, I wouldn't get hung up on the SAIP as a deciding factor. If it fails, it fails, replace it w/OEM.

Yes, I know of at least two CA members who are running the delete and are regularly passing emissions. I won't name names, but they're out there.

00-02 are pretty similar in issues/setup. 05-06 are like each other just the same in that regard. '03 is more-close to 00-02, and '04 is considered by some on here to be the bastard in-between with the drivetrain of the 00-02, but a lot of the looks and demeanor of the 05-06, but without SAIP and still running a 4spd AT, IIRC. And of course, is the entry year for the DC.

RE: Chips above ... I wouldn't be worried about cosmetics like that. It just tells me someone drove a lot of hwy miles with the truck, which is bonus IMHO. On a 15-20 year old car I'd take 200k hwy miles over 75k stop-and-go-short-trip miles any day. Seriously. You may delete the bumper anyway, so ...

Totally agree, minor cosmetic issues should not make or break your decision. Your priorities should be in finding a mechanically sound truck.

Not the day I was hoping for. I passed on the truck. Not a big fan of that lot :der:. Anyway, I’ve come down with some sort of upper respiratory infection and I sound like Phyllis Diller now. Not feeling too good so I’ve been lying around most of the day. I feel like there’s a few more popping up and springtime should help even more. There’s always hope:sadviolin:.

Can this be remedied and stopped if I clean it up and spray it with either fluid film or paint? I'm in a desert area and wonder if it will just continue once it starts regardless of the climate?? Also, in the first image, does it look like the rack has some leakage or maybe a rear main seal seeping down the back of the engine onto the rack? This would be a long-distance fly and buy to Washington state. He's asking 11k but is willing to work with me after I voiced my concerns. Should I just stop bothering with the semi-rusty ones and continue to wait for a dry-climate truck? Is it really worth it to settle on ones that look like this? I feel like I need a starting point to know what I should pass on from now on. Ultimately, I don't want to have to keep reapplying products to the undercarriage every year. The paint/interior of the truck look nice. 228k mi
I'm sorry for all the questions. :(

This actually looks pretty good to me! I don't really see any areas where the frame is de-lamonating or rusted through (but I am on mobile at the moment). The rack looks like mine did, and it was leaking so I replaced it.

Please though, if you're going to fly and see it in person, get it inspected locally before buying. I'd setup a time with a local dealership for a pre-purchase inspection and have it on the books well before you fly out!

Yeah, that's a good idea for sure. So you think that's from the rack? That's what I was thinking initially. How much did it cost to replace yours?

Replaced it myself, I'll have to look at my receipt, I purchased online through Toyota and I think it was around $500 itself. Of course, I did the "while I'm in here" stuff to bring the cost much higher.

It was something they mentioned on the purchase inspection at the dealership too, and I believe they quoted it at $1500 if I had them do it.

Sounds about right. Did you use a lift or were you on the ground under the truck in the garage? I could do it but would love to have a lift to get off the ground and weird positions.

No lift, just jack stands and swearing. It's heavy and a little awkward maneuver but it can be done alone on the ground. An extra set of hands would help for sure!

To me it looks like they hit the area on the bottom left side of the rack with some spray paint, but if so why there and no where else?

    upload_2024-2-9_20-14-48.jpg

For a starting point (of course, after https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/), if you haven't already, check out some of the posts on here where people are asking that very question. Check out the pics they post and what the general consensus is. You'll get a good idea of what's "eh" and what's "WALK AWAY!". Focusing on the climate of the truck is immaterial really, the history of the truck matters more.

Personally it's stressful enough to buy a car locally, and i would never fly to buy a car unless it were brand new but there are certainly people on here who have done it and it's turned out just fine for them.

I agree about the stressfulness wholeheartedly. I feel seriously handicapped by the long-distance where I don't have the ability to look first before pointing out a possible issue with the truck. I feel like I have to point out everything that could even possibly be wrong just to tenderize the deal before I even make a decision to fly there. It doesn't feel good and I sympathize with the seller. Because I sure as heck don't want to fly anywhere unless I'm 98% sure I'm driving that baby home.

I understand maintenance is key, I always have. But almost every one that's not from CA or AZ seem to have some sort of corrosion regardless of their maintenance history. I know I'm picky and I want what I want but I didn't expect it to take so long. (somewhere there's a small violin playing, I know)
I've read a lot of that thread and it's good stuff....like most of them are. I've been down this rabbit hole for quite a while now and I'm ready to come up for air soon.

I also don't think it's too much rust or the rust had damaged the frame. And if you can wrench on it yourself use that as a bargaining tool after you've had it inspected locally.

That's exactly what I'm doing right now. Waiting to hear back on my offer. Because the thing is pretty clean otherwise and it is a one-owner truck.
